Hi, everyone! I was on this site years ago and was very active in the community, but I've been gone for awhile and decided to come back with a new username and a new attitude!
So far, I've been focusing on sticking to my calorie limit (1600 calories), and using those calories for healthier foods. I went to a yoga class yesterday, and want to keep that as part of my exercise routine, but am aware that it might be better to incorporate other things as well. I used to run, but I live in NYC and the weather has been insanely cold, so I don't relish the idea of going to the park for a jog, lol. I also don't currently have a gym membership, though I'm still considering whether or not I will get one in the upcoming months.
Basically, I've done all this before, and made it work for me before, but it's been so long that in some ways I feel like a beginner all over again. So any suggestions on posts I should read from other members, exercises I should try, or anything else you can think of would be very helpful!

Thank you so much! One of these articles I had heard of from the last time I was here, but the other two are new, and all of them are super helpful!0 -
There are some great, free work out video's on youtube you can do in the comfort of your own home and with no equipment other than your body (if you have a few free weights even better, but not necessary). I am a long time runner and gym rat and never put much stock in online video's until I was forced to try them (unable to do anything else) and was wonderfully blown away by how effective they could be, from a cardio and strength perspective. Even though i am back to running and the gym I still incorporate online video's because they are so convenient, fun and a nice change.0

no, the weather has not been insanely cold. i live in brooklyn, and the weather has been great. yes, we've had some cold days, but for the most part this has been a very mild winter. I run 2-3 times a week outside. and it's never too cold to go to the gym.
get some warmer clothes and get outside!0 -

You're talking about the last week. Were you here when we had a blizzard last month, or when the temperature dropped to literally 1 degree??? Because I live in Queens, and it genuinely was that cold. If you can run in that kind of weather it's great, but I prefer not to.0 -
Hah! I live in Canada. I bought thermal running gear, cleats for my shoes, and kept running. I prefer the colder weather as I can control overheating. That being said, you won't keep with any activity you find unpleasant. How about doing stairs in your building?0

80% is about the nutrition and 20% is about the exercise. As far as exercise from home I enjoy the youtube based yoga videos and if you get a bosu ball there are many core strength training exercises. I personally find going to the gym helps me be more consistent but with the right mindset you can be just as consistent from at home!0

Wow, now that's dedication! Stairs sound like a good idea. I live on the 1st floor (lucky me, lol), but that doesn't mean I can't walk/run up the flights outside my door. There's a gym that's very close to home, maybe two blocks, but it has bad reviews both online and from people I know who have gone there. In addition it's super overpriced for what it is, so I'm hesitant to invest the money when I don't know if I'll even like it. Might be worth the risk at this point, though. They have loads of classes, and the community atmosphere would probably do me some good.

If you like yoga, there's a free YouTube channel for that. There are tons of free videos out there. Fitness Blender. If you Google Free exercise videos on YouTube you will have everything from basic walking instruction to heavy lifting instruction that can be done on your time table with the equipment you have.
If you have a smart phone there are all kinds of apps as well. The first one that comes to mind is NTC (Nike Training Club). I've used it, they have everything from beginner to advanced workout. Some with weights, some without.
And I'm with you on cold running! I'm in Michigan and for me it hurts. I can do 32 and up but anything lower than that and it is physically painful for me. Heat I don't mind, at all. I spent 25 years in Alabama and Florida so I know what heat and humidity are.
Just find what works for you. Find what you enjoy and rock it out. I'm always open to new friends if you are in the market.0 -

i run outside. while i didn't run during the blizzard, i ran the day after. i also ran this past sunday when it was 1 degree out and windy.
it has not been that cold out to work out. and i'm not picking on you, but the people that always say it's too cold to go running never seem to have a problem getting dressed to go out to a bar or whatever.
honestly, there is no more bad *kitten* feeling than going out and getting a run in during inclement weather and temperatures. anyone can go workout in good weather. it takes dedication and real desire to do it when everything else is keeping you indoors.0 -

This clearly is more about you and what you think defines dedication than it is about my OP. I've just started attempting to eat healthier and create a workout routine in the last couple of days. This is all very new, and I only mentioned the bad weather because even when I ran more consistently years ago, it was almost always during the fall and spring, when the weather is cool, but not at all cold. When the temperature dropped, I moved indoors to a gym treadmill. That is strictly personal preference, but not a lack of discipline.
And as for your comment about going to bars, you know nothing about me and what I do in this weather or at any other time. I actually just hate the cold in general, and when the blizzard happened and the temps went down in the days following, I was in my house unless I absolutely had to go out to go to work or to the store. I didn't even see my own boyfriend because I did not want to be outside. For some reason you associate my not wanting to run in this weather to laziness on my part, but you really don't know enough about me to make that assessment.
I think it's AMAZING that you're able to go out no matter what it's doing outside and get your run in, But even at my thinnest, that was never me. And I'm okay with that, because I'm gonna find my own ways to feel awesome and powerful and like I'm accomplishing something -- and it'll probably be in a yoga studio or the comforts of my own home. ^_^

Thank you so much! Glad you understand the winter struggle, lol. I'll definitely look into the yoga vids on YouTube, I only have two yoga DVDs and I'm a little bored with them, so a new routine would be lovely. And I'll add you as soon I post this!0
