Trying to log Hula Hooping

So I am new to myfitnesspal, and I am trying to log hula hooping. My fitbit flex doesn't record the work out I get from hula hooping very well, I'm not really standing in one place, I move around I do a lot of chest hooping and knee to chest hooping and arm hooping, so It's a really hard work out at least for an hour a day trying to perfect my flow, but I am having a hard time trying to figure out how many calories it burns and how to log it into myfitnesspal, because I've played the Wii Hula Hoop game, and it is nothing like the real thing, so I loathe to log it using that since the calorie count is so low. Any other hoopers out there have an idea on how we should log our workouts?

  • Hi Oblivion, know you asked this Q a while back, but I see you got no reply - did you find a solution? Because I am having the exact same problem! I do a really vigorous hoop workout (knees, chest, shoulders, etc etc) and really work up a sweat, yet my new Fitbit Flex barely recognises it as more than a few steps...

I mean...I wouldn't log hula hooping. I don't even log weight training. Not even circuit training for that matter. Hulu hooping seems like...an ab work out. Are you dancing around with it and tossing it and jumping through it and stuff? (Asking in all seriousness, I have seen some crazy things at festivals)

I don't use hula hoops, but maybe you could log it as aerobics?

IMHO - I would log as light aerobic workout and nevermind about the fitbit - not all devices/apps are for everything. I recently bought a hula hoop and get more exercise bending over to pick it back up.. lol work up quite the sweat doing it!! and laughing - mostly - wonder how many calories I burn laughing at myself trying to hula hoop at 244 lbs!!! and 53 years old LOL oh dear.

I just came across this because I'm having my own problem with it! haha. Dance hooping is very aerobic, and is definitely exercise. If you aren't breaking a sweat while hooping, then you're going easy on yourself and should probably move forward and push yourself to do faster paced/more complex movements.
Apparently there is an option in My Fitness Pal for "Wii Fit Super Hula Hoop." So if you are only waist hooping or doing hoop breaks, then that would be the best option. But if you are doing more interactive trick flow on and off the body, such as wedgies and escalators and rolls etc., I saw online that the average hula hooper can burn 400 calories in an hour. I'm guessing that number is for extremely active hoopers who are actually working up a sweat.
So, just add in calories by hand at your discretion? or invest in a fitbit.

    Hi,
I'm a bit late to this discussion. As a fellow hooper I also had this problem with my Garmin Vivofit/Vivoactive so what I did was used a heart rate monitor and did a 10 minute hula hooping working out and noted the calories used. Then I repeated this a couple more times on different days and took the average calorie burn to create my own activity in My Fitness Pal. So now I just put in how long I have worked out for and it does the rest. It may not be accurate every time but it works well enough. I also remove my watch so I don't get credit for hoop spins as steps.
