is medication dosage affected by weight loss?

Should I get my medication dosage checked as I lose weight? I'm on blood pressure tablets and thyroxine, and my regular check isn't for another six months (by which time I'm hoping to have lost about 60lbs).

Does dosage depend on weight?

For some drugs yes and some no. I don't know about your particular medication. You should ask your doctor. I am on an IV medication every 6 weeks that is dependant on weight so I get weighed right before getting my dose.

Definitely check with your doctor given those meds. DEFINITELY.

Also, your pharmacist can give professional guidance if it's hard to get through to your doctor via phone.

Thanks everyone, you're right I should get it checked out. Good idea about asking the pharmacist, I hadn't thought of that :)

Many medications can, especially blood pressure meds. My mom was getting very light-headed and almost passed out a couple of times. When she went to the Dr, it turned out that her weight loss had improved her BP so much that she no longer meeded the medication, and taking them was making her BP way too low.

Yes. Many prescriptions are based on body weight. I have been having lightheadedness off and on and it's because my BP meds were prescribed for a fatter me.

Yes. I get weighed at every haemotology appointment because they need to know how much I weigh if I ever have to go back on medication - it used to be that they gave me 1mg for every kg I weigh. I'm down about 30kg (70lbs) so that's a big change in dosage.

It depends on the medication--some are dosed by weight, some aren't. Ask your pharmacist. Says this RN and mother of a pharmacist. ;)

Thanks, I'm hopeful that losing weight will reduce the need for BP meds, in particular. Fingers crossed!

It worked for me, my dosage is now 0. Good luck.
