I have a can of black beans, no salt added, and a serving size is 130 grams for a total of 385 grams per can. I drained and rinsed the beans, tare my scale added the beans and it is weighing 227 grams for the whole can. I weighed it 3 times and everytime it's the same 227.

Could draining and rinsing really make a difference of 158 grams? Seems way too high to me! Would be nice though.

The calorie count on the package is undrained. There is a ton of protein in bean water.

Yes, but the recipe calls for drained.

Do you really think that the little bit of water could have weighed 158 grams?

Possibly, you could weigh it next time and see. I'm going to have a can of bean tonight, so I'll weight mine and see what I get.

150g of water is about 0.6 cups.

Thanks everyone, this has been driving me nuts. I think I will split the difference to satisfy my OCD.

ETA: I will be weighing the water in the future.

I'd find an entry in the data base for drained beans and log that.

Thank you so much! I feel less crazy now. My SO just didn't understand my frustration. I have a feeling that black beans are going to be a long standing joke!

The USDA nutrient database has a variety of entries for black beans, which in theory should match some MFP database entries (I say in theory because lately I've found that a lot of USDA matches that I used to use in the MFP database seem to have gone missing -- MFP's theory about its features seems to be "if it ain't broke, break it").
