Are you on any kind of medication? Even over the counter stuff like ibuprofen can cause heartburn sometimes. I get heartburn from stuff like Taco Bell, wine, even diet soda.

high fat, nightshades, any type of pepper, or high sugar can make it worse. it's hard to eat a good diet that doesn't make it work.

I started with otc antacids. I liked zantac because it worked the fastest and then lasted after. and chewy rolaids.
now I'm on prescriptions for it and it still pops up but I can eat normally now. even barbeque

i was having trouble too until i stopped the fast food/fried foods. however, Zantac over the counter did work for me pretty well. would be worth a try.

I use Nexium every day to help with heartburn. I'm actually a bit lactose intolerant and having dairy at night gives me heartburn rather than the low GI symptoms; I've suffered especially after ice cream at night, which I had last night!

You probably have GERD. Pick up some Prilosec at the store or see your PCP and get it started. Those meds are super effective. If you're having it after every single meal, that means a med would probably be more suitable for you as well as some lifestyle changes (decrease spicy fatty food, don't eat at night, etc).

If it's increasing and persistent then I would be asking my Dr. Take some Tums or other sodium bicarbonate (they are going to give you the fastest relief) and re-evaluate. You never want to jump right to a Nexium or Prilosec right away because they could hinder an underlying problem. And both of those drug are meant to be a 2 week program and are for those that already suffer from GERD or other GI issues.

    Start logging your food.
A doctor may eventually want to see what you have been eating.

    * High fat foods or greasy like pizza give me heartburn.

Prilosec/Nexium is sold over the counter as "omeprazole." I've been taking it for years, and it was controlling my acid reflux (which is probably what you're feeling), but not perfectly. Last year my husband's GI doc told him it works much better if you eat your dose first thing in the morning, as close as possible to 30 minutes before you eat your first food. To my amazement, he was right: it worked like a charm.

At the same time, I didn't want to stay on this med for life. From what I read, it's not a great idea to keep our stomach acid suppressed forever. Now that I'm losing weight, I'm starting to wean myself off the omeprazole by reducing my dose each week--down to a half dose now. The slow weaning has prevented the bounce-back effect I was told I could expect otherwise.

In my husband's case, he was seriously exacerbating his stomach acid problems by taking an ibuprofen every night at bedtime. Some foods can be a problem, too, especially foods late at night. The good news is, many people get complete relief by losing the extra weight. I don't know if it's the reduced pressure in the central body or simply eating a lot less every day, or both, but it's sure working for me.

For me high acid fruits can make the problem worse. Lower acid fruit - bananas, melon, pears, raspberries, Fuji & gala apples. Low acid = higher PH.

Barbeque sauce & ketchup cause flare-ups for me too. I've switched from cola to rootbeer. Cola is just caustic.

I avoid high fat meals and eating 3 hours before bedtime.

If you drink coffee - cold brew will be less acidic. I'm a tea drinker, that works but too much caffeine can be a trigger too.

It can also be LOW stomach acid. Your acid is too low to digest your food and it becomes rancid. Be are when taking antacids as it make low stomach acid worse and you can get in a real mess. Have your doctor check the acid level before treating the condition.

I know that for me, I get heartburn for a couple of reasons. If I eat dairy(I'm lactose intolerant), If i'm under a lot of stress, if I eat too much in one sitting, and/or once my weight gets too high. Everytime I drop the weight again, the heartburn goes away.

My Dr. was useless in helping me figure out what was wrong. I used Omeprazole and a couple other ones. They work for treating the symptom(to an extent) but not the actually problem. If your dr. doesn't know why you're having the heartburn, consider getting a referral to a specialist.

I used to get pretty bad heartburn too - once the heartburn woke me in the middle of the night. I usually take a couple of TUMS every couple of hours if it is persistent. I noticed that once I stopped eating greasy foods, and added more fruits, vegetables, and healthy grains to my diet, I stopped having heartburn. I still get it on occasion if I eat too much pizza/drink too much beer, but it isn't as painful as it was before.

I agree - log your food and see if there are any consistent food types that pop up on days when you have heartburn.
