I carve a deficit by eating less than I burn in a day. My Fitness Pal is great for that method.

Honestly, the links in the "Most Helpful" sticky at the top of this subforum. That contains all the secrets to my success.

    My secret:
Not doing cheat meals. Wasted 6 months doing that.
Once I stopped that nonsense I dropped weight.

It helps me to pre log my meals, eat lots of veggies, drink lots of water and PLAN when I plan ahead I find it is easier for me not to over eat.

Pre logging helps me too! Once I have that plan in place for the following day, it makes it easier to stick to and stay accountable to myself.

Log food every day. Weigh what I eat. Eat what I want, in reasonable amounts.

Losing weight is a mental process. You have to b there in your head and not stray from it. If youre not there.. then it wont happen.
This is true for me at least.. I'm sure some will argue.
I lost 50 pounds in 2009, basically for a guy, but I didn't get my bodyfat where I wanted it..I didn't eat well, if at all, and exercised my butt of literally.
I've read so many books on diet, willpower, goal setting, training, etc. But if you are not there in your head all the books/reading in the world aren't going to take the weight off for you.
I'm doing this for me now and I'm doing it right. Taking it slow, eating well, counting cals and keeping under so many cals/day (won't mention how many) but I'm there in my head and nothing is going to stop me. I log my food daily on MFP and have my own set calorie limit based on my height, weight, current bodyfat and lifestyle. Losing about 1.5-2# week which is aggressive but I'm not patient. I might go under cals a little some days or over a little but i dont stress. Havent had the motivation to hit the gym yet but live on a ranch, and I work, so I'm busy all the time. Once I feel I've started slowing w weight loss I'll ramp it up with weights/cardio.
My secret is- its simply a head game and once you are in it, it all falls into place. The hardest part is getting there.

Logging at the start if the day is a win for me, makes me really think if that extra bag of crisps is worth the cal count when I know I've a tasty dinner coming up...

Water, I start every meal with a glass to help my portion Control, and remembering to stop when I'm full, despite how delicious the food is! (I REALLY struggle with this bit!)

Not giving up on one mistake! If I "accidentally" shovel a bag of crisps in my face on the morning I don't write the day off as a fail and follow it with cake and pies, I log it, feel a bit crap about, it and carry on with the rest of the healthy day.. B)

Simply enter your info into MFP, choose the amount of weight you'd like to lose each week, and stay under the calorie limit MFP gives you.

You can eat whatever you want as long as you stay under the calorie limit MFP gives you. Of course, you will discover that certain foods have more staying power and keep you fuller for longer. And other foods are just not worth it.

Plus ... if you exercise, you can eat more!

So set up MFP, then walk to your local grocery stores and markets and have a good look around at what's available. Look at the calories. You may be surprised how much good-tasting but fairly low calorie food is available out there.

Then be sure to weigh everything so that your logging is accurate.
