Hi all!
Ive done calorie counting before but am bk after a loooong break. Im just baffled by the calories in potatoes and wondered if anyone could help?!
When looking at my packet of maris piper potatoes it says theres 218 calories in 100g. However, when I search for potatoes 100g seems to come up with alot less calories. I also googled calories in potato and again the results seemed to b alot less that 218. Any ideas??? I dont know what to put in my diary.
Thank you x

Cooked or raw?0

Put whatever is on the packet. The package you're holding containing the product you're eating is a lot more reliable than a random entry online.0

You say it's in a pack? Is there any other ingredient listed other than "potatoes?"0

According to the USDA database, 100 grams of Russet potatoes (raw) have 79 calories.0

Raw weights are generally considered more accurate.0 -

Weighing raw is fine, just check that the calories you're then logging are for raw weight too0 -

I've had good luck using the cooked version of potato's in here. It's all just estimates anyway, but if you over estimate (pick the higher value) you have a better chance of being in an actually deficit.0

This is important. Is it just a bag of raw potatoes or is it a packaged product with butter or other type of fat added?
I'd never heard of this type of potato so I looked it up and it's rarely sold in the US but sounds similar to a Yukon gold. I didn't read anything to suggest it would have more than double the calories of other potatoes.0 -
Im such an idiot!!! When Ive looked again at the info it says "when cooked as chips according to instructions"! The instructions they have given is for chips deep fried in oil!
Does this mean my 200g of potatoes cooked in fry light were not 450 calories?! I hope so!!!
Thank you for all of your replies! Any help on what u all put for calories in potatoes would be greatly accepted and appreciated! x0 -

When I make potatoes, I weigh them raw and then log the raw weight. I then log whatever I cooked them with (if I used margarine, oil, etc).0 -
P.S. I wonder whose wise idea it was to put the potatoe as deep fried chips as the only nutrtional info!!! Grrr x0

Yeah...most potatoes clock in around 79 calories per 100 grams raw.0 -

Oddness overload. A Maris Piper potato is a variety, just as Russet is a variety. The database listing of Tesco (a UK retailer) Maris Piper potato lists 218 calories per 100 g serving. The next line listing for Sainsbury (another UK retailer) Maris Piper potato lists 78 calories per 100 g serving. The next line for Asda ( no sabe) Maris Piper has 180 calories per 100 g. I would think that 47 bureaucrats in Brussels would be able resolve this dilemma.0

This.
I use the USDA entry for the type of potato I ate: https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods
I nearly always eat my potatoes roasted skin on with just a bit of salt and oil.0 -

Thank you all again for taking the time to reply x0 -
According to my potato bags, a raw potato serving is, 5 oz, so 142 grams, 110 calories, 2 fiber, 3 protein.0
