Does drinking 8+ glasses of water flip a "thirsty" switch?

Hey y'all,
I've been playing around with MFP for about 5 weeks; just to track what I was putting in my mouth at first. Of course, its summer and vacations/weddings/parties happen and I got away from it. I still noticed a change in the way my clothes fit, and my first true weigh-in after 5 weeks was 9.2 pounds down (woot!).
So with that initial thrill of success behind me, I decided to plug in a little more faithfully than before. Besides tracking my meals better, I wanted to focus on my water intake (I'm a former WeightWatcher member, and I remember the big deal the water was then). With the help of my trusty green water bottle and a few of the sparkling water 32-ozs, I've made it a point to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day for the past week. (I usually only drank my coffee in the morning and a glass of juice at night with dinner.)
Then the thirstiness struck! Ever since I started with the greater water intake, I feel thirsty all the time. I chalked it up to the 95 degree weather at first, but the past few nights I woke up with dry mouth (even drier than when I usually know I've been snoring).
Any web research I've done immediately calls out diabetes as the culprit. If so, I didn't realize that it could have such a sudden onset. I'm going to a MinuteClinic after work today for a diabetes screening (I don't have a general practitioner since moving to a different state).
Has anybody else had this happen?

I remember my friend mentioning her thirst after she began to drink 8 glasses of water daily. She thought it was because her body was used to being dehydrated that once she started drinking water like she was supposed to it had the need for more.
I would definitely check things out with your doctor though just to make sure everything is okay!0 -
good call on going to get checked out. At the very least, you can rule that out and chalk it up to being thirsty!!! hope everything turns out good for ya. :-) keep hydrating!!0

I experience this too. The more water I drink it seems the thristier I am for water. I start my day off with 16oz of water, very first thing I do when I get up even before eating anything. My trainer started me on this and my water intake has honestly doubled since starting this. There are days I will drink 16 glasses and I mean pure plain water.0

i've noticed if i'm very thirsty and my mouth and throat are dry water doesn't help much. i do drink a lot of water but i drink more green tea which is full of good stuff for your metabolism and has zero cals,fat, sodium, or protein.0

Good that you're getting it checked but I am always thirsty and I drink lots of water. I think your body becomes used to it and expects it.0

my boyfriend teases me because i'm always thirsty. I know it used to be because I was drinking a lot of diet coke (which just dehydrates you!), but i'm not worried about it since I'm craving water now .That's a good call though on the diabetes, I don't think I'm thirstier than most people, but I guess I'll start paying better attention and get screened too!0

IDK i've been drinking about 9 to 10 glasses of water a day and sometimes in thirsty sometimes in not. but here in California the weather changes all the time.0

I was drinking 6 glasses of water a day when I first started, but now I am up to 13-16 glasses a day ever since the heat wave broke here....but I just chalked it up to being more active. I didn't even think about diabetes. I had gestational diabetes when i was preggers and when u have that, u have a better chance of getting it later in life if ur overweight, thats one of the reasons i am trying to lose now! Good call on getting it checked out! Luckily, I still have my meter from when I was preggers and on days I don't feel quite right, I test my blood and its always been on track, so I think I'm good on that. Please let us know what ur results are if u can!0

I think you are correct. I noticed the same thing in myself wheni started trying too drink the reccommended amount of water. Your body gets used to the amount you are taking in, then starts relying on it. Most people dont realize it, but they live in a constant state of mild dehydration. by the time you are "thirsty", you are actually experience the third symptom! so yeah, your body starts "worrying" when you were giving it the right amount, then start to slack off. similar to the "starvation mode" they warn us about so much :-).
