How is it that I have stayed under my calorie goals the past two weeks, exercises, and then gained 4 lbs? I understand there is muscle involved but would that really cause that much of an increase?

It's not muscle. If you started a new workout routine, it's likely just water retention.

That happened to me last week, I went up 2 lbs did everything right and was stumped. I stuck with my routine though, knowing that I was doing it right and ended up with a huge loss this week. Hang in there.0

I took an Aikido seminar that lasted six hours, and gained almost ten pounds after. I was horrified and posted a similar thread. It's not worth panicking over, but it might take more than a couple days to go away. I took this seminar two months ago it came off after a couple weeks, and the decline continued. So, don't stress about fluctuations. You didn't undo anything.0

What time do you weigh yourself? I suggest morning before consuming anything, that should give you consistent results. Just stick to what your doing another week and see if your weight comes down, but as I said, weigh in the morning.0

I wouldn't be too worried unless it continues. I have been losing an average of 2 lbs per week since I started my diet back in November. I do the same every week. I have an office job so my activity level is relatively light. I don't exercise other that the normal daily walking which my Fitbit tracks. I stay at my daily calorie goal, am very strict about logging everything and don't cheat with junk food. Looking back my weekly weight loss varies. On two different weeks I gained a pound or two, a couple of weeks I only lost 1 lb while other weeks were 2lbs. And for 4 different weeks I lost 3 to 4 pounds, but hadn't changed anything in my calorie intake or activity level. So I just look at the overall picture for last 22 weeks and compare my current weight for the week to what I projected my goal weight for that week would be.0
