Lose Weight Without Exercise?

I have a question. The amount of calories that MFP has set for you to lose weight is including no exercise, correct? So if you eat the amount of calories that it says, then you will lose weight? I understand that exercise is good for you, but some days I don't have time. Therefore, if I stay in my calorie range set by MFP I will still lose weight right?

Yep. I haven't worked out (besides cleaning my house) in 2 weeks and I've lost about 2lbs.

That's working for me so far. But eventually, when I get closer to my goal weight it'll be a lot tougher.

Yes. MFP already works in a deficit. It assumes you aren't going to exercise - that's why people say to make sure you eat back your exercise calories when using MFP.

You don't have to work out everyday to lose weight. Actually, your body NEEDS rest periods, so it is better if you don't work out every single day. I work out 3 days a week for 60 mins. I do circuit training - so I work myself pretty hard when I'm there.

MFP is set up to give you a calorie deficit that is lower than your BMR. If you eat within those guidelines you should lose weight at about the rate that you have set up. Many people do this. There are many, many benefits to exercise and it will help you be healthy at the end of your weight loss. While, in theory, it is not absolutely needed to lose weight, it helps to get some in whenever possible. Even a couple days of exercise a week will have positive benefits!

You can lose weight without exercise, but then you'll be an untoned, possibly flabby mess. :)

Yes. You don't have to exercise to lose weight, but exercising every now and then is really beneficial to your body. Not only is it just plain healthy, but exercising will also help with toning after weight loss. :)

Theoretically, yes, but it is not an exact science. While caloriic intake is the most important part of the weight loss equation, where those calories come from is just as important. So keep that in mind! And if you exercise a bit, you can ease the caloric restrictions a bit too.

My fitness pal (MFP) calculates what you need per day to lose 2 lbs a week.

I would recommend you work out because its GOOD FOR YOU. You say you dont have time? Sure you do... Set your alarm for 5:30AM. Do a 2 mile walk every morning. By the time you get back, people are just starting to wake up. You can make some breakfast, get ready for the day and after a week or so - start to feel GREAT!! Eventually you will start to run here and there and who knows... The next marathan runner who snaps the ribbon at the finish line??? Only you can make THAT happen

I think it depends on what you put on your profile as to how much "movement/exercise" you do in a day. If you put none then yes I think it accounts for that. I don't exercise every day either and I'm loosing weight. I have to give my body a rest so I don't over do it! lol but exerciseing helps you loose it faster!

At first yes. Just a diet change for the better helps most people loose weight. Now the question is do you want to loose weight or get in shape. Skinny does not automatically equal healthy.

I've never met anyone who owns a television set that truly has no time to exercise.

Yes, this is how MFP is set up, and when you do exercise MFP will add back the amount you burn, to ensure you are at your goal caloric deficit for the day to lose your goal amount of weight. So you can lose weight eating MFP's recommended calories and not exercise. But for those that don't exercise at all, you may lose weight, but will not be healthy. losing weight and being healthy are not the same thing.

    Technically YES.

    BUT Think about this

Weight loss is 90% diet and 10% exercise...

Did you commit your self to doing this lifestyle only 90% of the way? when you get to your goal (which in my opinion is almost impossible without exercise) do you want to be able to say "I GAVE IT 100%" or will saying "Meh! I gave it about 90%"

Its all in how you want to do it?

I suggest working out or once you lose weight you still probably wont like what you see, yes you will be smaller but you will still be soft, your body wont be tight, and you wont have toned muscles... that is what exercise is good for. Exercise also builds muscle which burns fat, the more muscle you have the mroe fat you will burn. Its all in what you want really.

You can still lose weight eating above BMR without exercising as BMR is the amount you would burn in a coma, the moment you move, eat, sit up stand, you are burning more than BMR. A lot of people confuse maintenance calories with BMR, they are not the same, your maintenance can be anywhere from 1.2 to 1.75 times your BMR depending on your daily activity excluding exercise.

depends on your fitness level. If you are fit, no, if you are unfit yes.

BUT it is better than doing nothing at all... to the OP if you would like to see what it is doing for you, purchase a Heart Rate moniter... If walking gets your heart rate up to 80% (?! correct me on the percentage if I am wrong) of your maximum heart rate then you wont be getting the cardio vascular exercise that your body needs to work its muscles... But it is better than sitting ont eh couch. So if you are fit, don't just give up the walking because it isn't a Kick @$$ work out.

If you walk on days that you dont' have sufficient time to make it to the gym and then do actually go to the gym or whatever when you can then that is great.

Keep at it. But to really work your muscles you will want to REALLY work them.
