Hello everyone,

I'm 27 and now have just realized I've been skinny fat all my life. It is time for me to get in shape. I've been talking to a lot of people about if I should bulk or cut. Like most skinny fat people I have the majority of my weight in my mid section and not much muscle. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? If so what did you do to get in shape?

If you are fat, you don't bulk. This place is obsessed with bulking. You can work out at a deficit and lose the fat, then reevaluate.

I haven't been in that position myself, but I'm sure people would either tell you to bulk and then cut, or do a body recomp if you have the patience. I suggest compound lifts.

I'm pretty much where you are. I had/have some fat I need to cut and want to add muscle as well. I'm not super accurate at logging, so I'm pretty sure I'm eating probably just below maintenance and have been concentrating on lifting with some HIIT thrown in. I lost about 5lbs in the first week, another 2 over the course of about 4 weeks and have been maintaining for the past 3 weeks. I've noticed big improvements in my muscle mass and definition however, so I am just going to commit to the fact it's going to take a really long time of eating just below maintenance to lose the fat and just above to gain muscle.

Cut first. New lifters will be able to gain muscle while cutting if they lift right (heavy lifting, compound lifts, in the 4-6 rep range).

Personally I would keep it simple for now. Eat at maintenance or just a slight deficit, find a good beginners routine and focus on form & building strength.
