Frustrating start!

I'm a habitual yoyoer getting going again after about 6 months. Tried slimming world, weight watchers, fast diet, shakes, you name it! Decided to do it differently thus time and make this about health and fitness over the long term and I'm determined! But, 7 days of calorie couting and doing exercise nearly every day (a first!) and NO weightloss. In fact, I've gone up half a pound! Usually I'll lose at least 3-4lb in week 1 of a diet. Very disheartening

Slow and steady wins the race. You want to make changes that are going to last for the rest of your life, right? Part of this process is that it's not linear. You won't always lose when you expect to, and you won't always gain when you expect to. Keep at and track your trends over time.

I have to say that I agree with Jennifer. I just started myself but like you, I want this to be a REAL lifestyle change not just lose X amount of weight. I want to find what I love in exercise and love doing it. Try setting a non-scale goal and something that is measurable (ex. push ups, run X miles or X mins). Your weight loss will follow but we need not to make deadlines on our weight that is way too much pressure and sometimes can be disheartening!

If you are exercising and it is a first then the weight gain could actually be due to muscle mass. If you are lifting weights or are doing a fair amount of cardio, then what you would want to concentrate on would be size. There is a pretty popular picture that shows one pound of fat compared to one pound of muscle and the size is completely different. Don't be disheartened because you are following the way to a much happier lifestyle.

Thanks!!! Defo not going to let it derail me. Just unusual for me to not lose first week and as much as this is about fitness not weight, I do need the number on the scales to go down for health reasons! Buy I'm deliberately not setting a 'target' to fixate on. Doing my first triathlon in September - that's my goal!

Your problem is not the yo-yoing, your problem is that you see it as a diet. I think you need to see it as a change of lifestyle, rather than a diet. A diet is a quick-fix, where the calorie intake vs calorie output is a permanent thing. As long as you burn more calories (or eat less calories) than your allowance you should lose the lbs. It is not rocket-science, but it does require commitment, and it will not always be plain sailing, but if committed it will give you the rewards

I have bolded the key. New exercise often results in water retention that is likely masking some loss. Drink lots of water and be patient.

I agree- water retention from new/increased exercise is likely to be the culprit. It'll come off soon!

For me, weighing food on a food scale is totally foreign but I would def say this is the reason for me having such a good month! 7/30lbs gone!! Woohoo

Idk why it cut off the rest of my comment:/ I said weigh everything solid in grams and make sure you're using accurate entries in MFP log:)
