Weigh sweet potato before or after?

Hello all! I was just curious to see how some of you weigh, cook, and log your sweet potato.

    I weigh them raw. Even though it's quite depressing because they weigh so much less after cooking :/

    I weigh all vegetables raw.

    I weigh it raw, cook it (usually in the microwave), and I weigh the skin after I am done eating it; but only if I remember or if I want to be really picky about the calories (not very often).

    I weigh everything raw whenever possible.

    ok because weighing it raw, it weighed about 500 grams! i was not really sure how to log that? I have friends that chop it, cook it, then weigh it.

    I weigh mine after cooking and without skin. I just had one for lunch! To see the difference, I added both to my diary, raw and baked, 100 g. The raw was 118 cal, and the baked was 116 cal.

    My thinking is if you aren't eating it raw then why weigh it that way?

    I never eat a whole sweet potato so I weigh it cooked and use a USDA 'cooked' entry.

    @Francl27 Actually that makes more sense; I should try it because I also share the sweet potato with my husband.

    I cut my sweet potato into disks, and lay them flat on a baking sheet with parchment and cook them in the oven. I then measure in grams after they are cooked. I usually have 50 grams of cooked sweet potato (which isn't very much) each day, because I love them so much. I use them in salads or mixed into oatmeal as a sweetener.

    I do the same with baked potatoes, I cook it then cut in half or 1/4 and weigh the portion I am going to eat.

    Always way all food except oatmeal after cooked because manything will cook down which means ur actually eating less and the other way around as well

    Other than in the case of meats, the difference in weight is primarily water weight. That does change calorie density. With meat it is water as well, but also some fat. Either way the changes that happen vary depending on how long something is cooked. That is why one should weigh raw.

    I will use meat as an example. A 8 ounce steak will lose different amounts of weight depending on how well done a person cooks it. A very small amount of what is lost is fat weight, the vast majority is water which does not change the calories of the raw meat. To think that something has less calories because it cooks down is to not understand why it cooks down.

    Awesome! Thank you all so much for your feedback! I got a lot of good ideas! Tonight I weighed it raw and then took the difference from the skin leftover. Next time I will for sure cut it up and bake it. That sounds good!
