So is there any good weight loss pills out there that are not total hype or unhealthy? I just want something to help my Metabolism Since I have a under active thyroid and it makes it a bit harder to lose weight. I'm eating right and exercising. Just want an extra little help. Thanks!

I would suggest talking to your doctor to ensure you are receiving the proper medication for your under active thyroid. If you're already on medication I, personally, would be concerned about drug interactions with the over the counter weight loss pills that are available, they might not require a prescription but a lot of them have natural ingredients and those can interact with other drugs efficacy. drug/food/alcohol interaction checker
Generally speaking diet pills are just stimulants (caffeine), you could save yourself a heck of a lot of money and just drink a few more cups of coffee a day if you are looking for a boost.0 -
Question....do you plan on taking pills the rest of your life? I would Assume not but I ask because with 99% of diet pills you end up gaining most of the weight or more back once you stop taking them. (I've tried many) Honestly I would go to your doctor and see if they have any advice on it before thinking about diet pills. Don't want to put in the hard work and effort for the weight to come back with a vengeance.0

This is all good advice. If you have a serious condition you shouldn't be trying to medicate yourself with OTC drugs which aren't well regulated. You could cause yourself serious harm.0 -
Avoid them at all costs, whether OTC or prescription.0

I have tried many MANY different pills. I have found that a multivitamin everyday seems to work best. Although if I am having a bad day, I may take a green tea pill for the caffeine.0

If you have an under active thyroid, you will want to talk to your Dr and have tests run to put you on medication (usually synthroid or levothyroxine - same thing) to put your thyroid in an appropriate range. There is no need to use other medicine which does not correct the base issue that you're having and an under active thyroid can cause more issues than just a lower metabolism.
And in case you're wondering, I have a very under active thyroid (mine was removed) so I deal with thyroid issues like this on a daily basis.0 -
Nope. And with an existing medical condition I definitely wouldn't mess with any diet pills that can do who knows what to your system! That's just reckless.0

Since getting some diet pills that made me break out in a horrible rash on my face I tend go be wary of any weight loss "aid"!0

I wouldn't worry about all this because the pills won't have had more than a placebo/caffeine spike effect in the first place. No pill except treatment for your thyroid condition will improve your metabolism.0 -

Absolutely !! Your not going to find much help in the regular forms as people will flame you and tell you your a drug addict or will turn into one if you use them. I think that they see it as cheating or they are somehow jealous. There is a group on here called "Phentermine Users" We are supportive and most importantly successful. I personally have lost 21 lbs in 7 weeks using Adipex. Adipex is a stimulant that will slightly raise your metabolism while suppressing your hunger pains. I follow a 1250-1350 cal a day diet, do lite cardio a few times a week and eat healthy. About two weeks ago I added some strength training to that regiment. In the last 7 weeks I have dropped 3% body fat while putting on 2.5% lean muscle. Go see a weight lost doctor in your area. They will make a plan for you and you will have success. I have virtually no side affects except for dry mouth but that just encourages you to drink more water. ... I followed a similar program 5 years ago and lost 40 lbs in 3.5 months.. it took 2 years of eating what ever I wanted for half of it to come back... Your going to need to make permanent healthy lifestyle changes if you want the results to stick. Adipex is just a great tool to help you get started.
Ok let the hate begin...-2 -

I'm not going to hate on you, but I do have a couple of questions if that's ok?
Why do you need pills to stick to a 1350 calorie diet?
If you regained the weight after doing a similar program 5 years ago, what is going to stop you from regaining the weight again this time around?
I'm genuinely interested in hearing your answers
FTR I used phentermine once for a hellish 2 weeks. So, not judging your choices.

Not a hater at all but I would never recommend pills. Do I consider it cheating? No, I consider it completely unnecessary and people fail to learn the most important parts of weight loss - eating in a sustainable manner and changing the overall diet to assist with that. Hence all the 'I've tried all these diets' comments from people.
Out of curiosity you recommend Adipex, isn't that a prescribed appetite suppressant?0 -

Yes it is a prescription drug and that is why I suggested that she see a doctor. I also said that she would have to change her lifestyle to make the results stick. I believe in using every tool at my disposal to achieve my goal. Adipex is just one of them. It helps with cravings and helps jumpstart your weight loss. Most Phentermine users see a large weight loss in the first week to 10 days of use. I lost 9.8 lbs my first week.0 -

What's going to stop me from regaining the weight.. Well I have made a concerted effert to change my life style and eating habits. I realize that once I finish that I will have to stay active to maintain.
I don't know what issues you had but it's not for everybody but I think it's worth a try if it is prescribed by your doctor.0 -
I'm gonna be that person and mention the herb Ephedra, but it's banned in the US because people went around abusing it. It is used as an appetite suppressant and performance enhancer. You can still get Ephedrine, a synthetic drug, but you can only buy it OTC in the US in asthma medications, and you definitely don't want to go blindly taking asthma medication for weight loss. Additionally, it can have negative side effects and it is combined with guaifenesin when sold for asthma.
Honestly, though, most diet pills are usually just snake oil. Companies prey on innocent people, peddling crap that doesn't do anything. There are also a lot of scam websites out there that will steal your information or overcharge you. I caution you to do lots of research and be wary of fake reviews. Don't buy things endorsed by people like Dr. Oz... they are making money for their endorsements of those products.
I think your best bet is to talk to your doctor, as the first person responded.-1 -

Sorry, I was on my phone when I wrote my post. I didn't realise you were a guy... Yes I imagine eating such a low calorie goal would be near impossible for a male without medical intervention..
I had many negative side effects whilst on phentermine. 2 weeks was all I could hack. I can't even remember if I lost weight in that time, it's all just a haze.0 -
I appreciate all the wonderful advice from everyone so much! But for those wondering about my thyroid issue I have been and am on the proper medication for my condition, prescribed by my doctor and have blood tests regularly. I like the idea of herbal pills to help with energy. I'm not looking into some get skinny fast weight loss pill, rather something that will aid in helping my Metabolism And energy. Even my prescribed pills (Levothyroxine) are not enough for energy it does help to a extent but I need a little more help to get my feet up off the ground so to speek.0

There are no (legal) pills that will boost metabolism. The illegal ones are very, very dangerous, and when they were once used medically, even in hospitals with doctors administering them in careful doses many patients died. The thing about metabolism is it's all energy. You can only really do two things with energy - you can expend it as mechanical work (moving your body, lifting things, etc.) or you can expend it as heat. The actual metabolism-boosting pills mean you waste a lot of energy as heat, raising your body temperature and putting you at risk of death by hyperthermia.
In terms of things that work and won't kill you, there are prescription medications that can help as appetite suppressants. And there is one OTC diet pill that prevents some fat absorption in the bowel. That's about it.0 -

Amphetamine salts which the majority of prescription stimulants are derived from raise the bodies metabolism and stimulate the central nervous system. This is why ADD patients can focus on Adderall and why other drugs in this family are able to be used as diet pills. They raise the metabolic rate and curb appetite. I personally have been perscribed many of these drugs for ADD and ADHD so I am very used to their effects and side effects. I think they can be very effective when used under the close supervision of a Dr.0 -
if you get good quality green tea, that can really kick your metabolism, and drinking hot drinks also makes you feel full so that might be an option0

Green tea does barely anything for your metabolism, but you're right, drinking more low- or no-calorie drinks can be helpful to some.0 -
I used prescription phendemetrazine to lose over 80 pounds from February to October of last year. As stated above, it's a tool you can use, just like MyFitnessPal and a food scale are tools.
I'm somewhat of an anomaly because I have Crohns disease yet I've also been overweight or obese most of my life. (Most Crohns patients seem to be thin or even underweight.) The phendemetrazine suppresses my appetite and is also a stimulant. One of my worst symptoms is chronic fatigue and I've received a great deal of relief from that when using the drug. (And I've been monitored at least monthly by a physician.)0 -

You should talk to your doctor. Even herbal pills can interfere with your thyroid medication.0
