A calorie deficit means you're burning more energy over the course of a day than you're taking in. It's how weight loss happens; except for surgery it's the only way. You can achieve a deficit through diet, or exercise, or some of both. How many calories you should eat depends how much exercise you do and how quickly you want to lose weight, MFP should have set up a goal for you when you joined. Cardio or weight lifting can both use energy and contribute to your weight loss goals, whichever you enjoy more and are more likely to stick with is the one you should do. For most people, this will only be a minor contribution to your weight loss.0

1. What will make me lose weight faster weights or cardio? Cardio burns more calories than weight, however both provide health benefits. I want all around health - so I do both. I want to lose fat (not muscle) - so I do both. Strength training will do more to "shape" the end result, but cardio is great for your heart.
2. How many calories should I eat a day to loose weight? I am 34 5'6 and 9st11. Missing activity level. Since you are not terribly overweight - plug in 1/2 (or 1 pound at the very most) for your weekly weight loss goal. MFP will give you a starting number. This number is before exercise. Eat more on workout days (about 50% of calorie burn MFP gives you).
3. What is the definition of calorie deficit? Your body is using calories 24/7. All the calories your body uses including exercise is called TDEE (total daily energy expenditure). Eat less than this number.....you lose weight. The calorie deficit is the number below your TDEE ......250 fewer daily calories for 1/2 pound a week.1 -
So if mfp says I should eat 1200 calories and I want to loose say 1pound a week I should eat 1000 calories? Thanks for all that info I have been doing both cardio and weights for both reasons but just wasn't sure if I was doing it right x0

Cardio will burn more calories, and increase your aerobic capacity. Weight training will increase your strength and overall physique. The other great thing about weight training is, your body will continue to burn calories even after you are done training. As the more lean muscle you have, the more efficient your body will burn calories.0

No, MFP gave you a deficit already (1200 includes the deficit). MFP's lowest minimum DEFAULT is 1200 before exercise. It's difficult enough getting adequate nutrition at 1200.
You should eat 1200 + 50% of your workout calories. Accept the fact that weight loss will be slow, as you are closer to goal.
Fast weight loss will have trade-offs. Fast weight loss helps you lose a larger % of lean muscle. Not the trim, taut look you are likely hoping for.0 -

If you've popped in your stats to MFP (including current weight, activity level, and desired weight loss), if it gives you 1200 calories that is how much you eat -- the deficit is already built-in. Depending on the activity level you've put in, you might also need to eat back some of the calories burned during exercise.0 -
Thanks everyone really helpful xx0

1. Weight/fat loss is simply a bi-product of your diet...when you consume less energy than you expend, you lose weight, irrespective of what exercise you're doing. Regular exercise has the additional benefit of increasing overall expenditure which makes maintaining a reasonable deficit easier...but exercise isn't inherently for weight loss...if it were, then all of us maintainers wouldn't be crushing it in the gym would we?
2. If you put your stats into MFP, it will calculate a calorie target for you as per your stated goals. Keep in mind that the more aggressive your rate of loss goal is, the less calories you're going to get...and MFP has a floor of 1200. Your target is also without any exercise...meaning if you did no exercise and ate to that target, you would lose weight...because again, losing weight is about your diet, not what exercise you're doing. When you add exercise, you increase activity and thus earn additional calories.
3. I'll use my numbers. Without any exercise I need around 2,300 to maintain my weight. If I want to lose about 1 Lb per week I need a 500 calorie per day deficit...so if I eat 1,800 calories that's what I have....2,300 - 1,800 = 500 calorie deficit. When I exercise I can eat more because my maintenance number will also increase with said exercise.0 -
That makes total Sense to me thanks so much cwolfman ☺️0
