Hi, my name is Levi. I am 19 years old, 6 foot tall and I weight 293 pounds. I've been trying recently to lose weight and my TDEE is 3500 to maintain my weight but that seems ridiculously high. I've been eating around 1600 calories and working out but I'm not seeing the results I'm looking for. Idk what to do.

How long have you been eating 1,600 calories? How did you decide on that number?

How long have you been doing this?

How carefully are your measuring your portions? It is very easy to be off with them and that can easily double the actual calories eaten. BTW, 3500 for a 6 foot tall 19 year old who is 293 does not sound crazy. I am only 5'10" in the 220 pound range and turning 50 in July and I lose at 2100 calories a day, but I measure very carefully using a digital kitchen scale for all solids including those that are ground and grated, and measuring cups for liquids.

This video shows how easily one can end up almost doubling calories even when the amount of food looks quite similar. https://youtu.be/vjKPIcI51lU

If your TDEE is 3500 and you are eating 1600 ....then that's a weekly deficit of 13,300 calories (or 3.8 pounds a week). That's extremely aggressive plan (45.7%).

What are the results your were looking for? The eating "around" part is likely your issue. Measure and log everything.

Scooby gives almost 3300 for sedentary, over 3600 calories for 1-3 hours of light exercise a week. 3500 seems very reasonable for a 19 year old male of that height and weight.

Well so about a month ago I was really inspired to lose weight. A little over a month ago I started my "diet" and about 2 weeks ago I started working out with my friend. And that's when I started tracking my calories. I weighed myself a week and a half ago and I lost 13 pounds cause I weighed 306. I just didn't feel like I ate that much. But early on in the diet I was eating like 1000 calories but that is crazy.

is your TDEE based on your body weight or LEAN BODY MASS? that may be high. if you can estimate your BF%, you'll know what number to put in there. or use your goal weight. im 6'3" and NOT 19 and im around 1650 average. I taper my calories down from a high-cal day to around 1300.

A 13 pound weight loss is a big number for 1 month. Perhaps your weekly weight loss expectations are too high. It's normal for the first week's loss to be pretty high (that's likely more water weight than fat). But after that weekly weight loss settles down.

2 Pounds a week is very respectable. After awhile that will become 1.5 pounds a week, and then 1 pound, finally 1/2 pound. This is normal.

not to me...my son is 21 about 6 ft 2 and is 205...his TDEE is 3500-4000 depending on work/workouts...

1600 seems low to me for calories...

are you logging accurately and consistently..????

My son recently lost about 40lbs without logging....just ate less...moved more...didn't log one bite.

I'm scared to eat 3000 calories a day cause I don't want to gain weight. I've also been taking multivitamins and fishoil.

He didn't mention how long he was working out (weight training? Cardio? Both?), so I would think his TDEE would be closer to 2700-2800 sedimentary. Usual culprits are not estimating Calories In correctly and/or Calories Out for exercise. If he's truly eating 1600/day he should be losing on average 2-3 lbs a week. I started at 305 (6'2") and set myself at 1600ish at first and was walking about 45 minutes a day 6-days a week. I averaged 2lbs a week, sometimes more for the first few weeks. But I was weighing everything that passed my lips, and figuring that 50% of my exercise calories could be an over-estimation so I refused to eat back more than 30% of them or so. Worked great until I got within 25 lbs of my goal.

I honestly never tried Scooby's calculators, I always use IIFYM. Seems to work for me anyway.

Yes I have been working out about 5-6 days a week, both cardio and weight lifting. I've been taking to the best of my ability.

then don't...but are you sure you are only eating 1600...if your were the weight would be running off you.

    I lose on 1600 a day...

Fish oil, condiments, oil used for frying/baking, even some spices have calories, sugar (big one). Really take the time to log everything down to the gram and see if you are actually at 1600, because if you are, and you're working out that much, and your height and weight are what they are.. I'd go see a doctor. Something might be wrong. Find the error though, it's there somewhere.

I know how you feel though about eating at TDEE, I have not had the guts to do it yet. I'm 2 lbs from my goal and am worried that if I eat anywhere near my TDEE I'll gain 25 lbs quickly. But that's a fear from dieting for the last year or more. Moving into maintenance is going to be a new thing for me for sure.

I feel fine, I'm not tired. I actually went to the doctors today and had my blood checked to see if everything was good. I'll get the results back Monday.

But how are you determining how much of a food you actually eat? How big your portion size is? Are you eyeballing any of your portion sizes? Using measuring cups?

Also, are you double-checking the entries you choose in the database? Some of them are off by quite a bit.

Yes I'm starting to use measuring cups and I try to double check the calorie counter

^^This is a great video that really shows how inaccurate your calorie-count can be if you're not being careful with your portion sizes.

Buy a food scale and weigh everything

You seem enthused and that's good, don't focus on the scales lack of movement when its moved so far already.
There are a lot of factors that go into that weight that are more than fat/muscle/bone it can fluctuate +- 5 pounds on a day to day basis.

It's literally possible that that weigh in was -5# and this one was +5# and you lost 10#. Probably not likely but it is possible. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning after using the bathroom this should help to smooth the ranges.

Shooting for 2# a week at your weight is considered healthy. That does sound like quite a few more calories than 1600, but if you're not going to use a scale you better be damn right about portion sizes. If you are off by a bit here and there that is not going to have as big of an impact as someone eating a 1400 cal diet, but make sure that you log EVERYTHING and that you get the high cal items correct.
