Ask your doc for referral to a registered dietitian. Also exercise and lose weight. Small changes in these areas can beat this back in a few months. You really want to get a handle on this NOW.5

When you reduce carbs, you increase fats and oils.
So breakfast is good with eggs and bacon. Also coffee with full cream or half and half. Full fat yogurt.
Salad with full fat salad dressing. Pork chops, steak, dark meat chicken. Tuna or salmon with mayo. Sauteed zucchini and yellow squash cooked with onions and garlic in butter or any oil.
Low carb veggies include broccoli and cheese or cream of cauliflower soup or green bean dishes.
Also crust-less pizza and crust-less quiche.1 -
My doctor gave me in impression all I needed to do was reduce calories and increase my exercise to get me back to the normal range. I say eat the foods you like in less quantity and exercise most days per week for 30 minutes.3

Check out http://www.dlife.com/ -- which is a great resource with medical help, recipes, and other cool stuff for diabetics and prediabetics.
Bottom line? Watch your sugar/ carb intake; up your protein, up your fiber and veggies.2 -
The dietician told me to lose weight as little as 10% makes a huge difference . Get in some exercise she recommended taking a walk after every meal if possible not a long strenuous walk either just 20 minutes , this helps keep your blood sugar levels down . She said to get in a variety of foods , good carbs , lean meats and fish , lower fat dairy , lots of veggies etc . Berries are a good choice , citrus fruits , lots of fiber rich foods beans , lentils for example . She said you have to eat healthy and something you can live with the rest of your life if it's too strict you won't be able to stick with it . It has worked for me it's been 6 yrs and my levels are good and no meds . Best of luck you can do this .

Best wishes. You can control your insulin now with diet and a little walking. Don't panick, lizzy's advice is good!0

I feel for you as I'm in the same situation. Your doctor can provide the best guidance, but mine told me to take an Omega 3 supplement, exercise to lose some weight, and to cut back on carbs and to not eat them at all in the evening.0

I was borderline diabetic Jan 20th..My Dr told me losing weight would go a long way towards beating this back. I have dropped 37 pounds since then..and I went to the Dr today..He said my tests showed normal..My Dr did not give me any special diet. He said..anything which helps you lose weight is good..by eating less, you automatically reduce carbs, fats etc. I would ask your Dr, but there is no need for any special diet.(at least not with myself and my Dr) Lower your calories, exercise , lose weight and see where you are at. My Dr. said "put your shoes on" meaning..do something..it is always better than the status quo..I lowered my calorie intake to 1200-1400 a day..and ride a stationary bike 3x a day for 20 minutes. I started on March 1st at 308 pounds and have lost 37 pounds. My Dr. was amazed and happy for me. I also cut soda out of my diet..which I believe is a huge help. Good Luck on your journey!0

if you're just prediabetic, going for a couple continuous walks can help burn some calories and lower blood sugar. my blood sugar is always lower after a 20 minute or longer walk.
if you're not on medication for your blood sugar, you might want to avoid higher sugar foods. i avoid most fruits and fruit juices, (apples and cherries are fairly low glycemic index if you need fruit), eat sugar free ice cream, candy and and fudgecicles in moderate to low amounts. i sweeten with stevia instead of sugar, although if you're pre, you can probably use xylitol, but watch out as until your body adjusts to it and malitol in most things like no sugar ice cream, it can have a laxative effect.
eat smaller portions of complex carbs - with grain and corn chips i tend to eat a half to three quarters of a portion, weighed dry before preparing. eat lots of broccoli, brussell sprouts and stuff like that - it's super low in calories and much of its carbs are actually fiber, which won't increase blood sugar. find tasty dressings for salad that are very low sugar but high on taste, as you want to enjoy your food. i use galeo's ginger wasabe as my fave, and half a serving of ken's steakhouse lite blue cheese is yummy, and you can mix either with low fat sour cream as another taste.0 -
If you require a special diet, which may just include counting carbs, your doc should've given you some information lol. Good news is your condition is reversible. Exercise creates more glucose receptors, so start moving a little more. Get in touch with a registered dietician or diabetes educator (nurse who specializes in diabetes) or both. A little education goes a long wsy.0

definitely ask about a dietician, but also double check what they tell you. also try this book - The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed. excellent read by a nurse who did a lot of research.0

prediabetic (I'm assuming your A1C was in the 6.0-7.0 range?) is pretty reversible if you do something now. In general losing weight and staying active will help lower your sugars. In addition limit your intake of foods that raise your blood sugar (grains, fruits, sugar) in favor of other options that do not affect your sugar as much. Proteins and fats do not affect sugars the way carbohydrates do. Alcohol is another one to really cut back on0
