I'm losing weight in a great rate and the only thing I've been doing so far is walking. I've lost 17 lbs in 15 weeks (it got a bit faster when I started doing 11k-13k steps every day a month ago but I was losing before steady as well). I'm 5'2 started at 149 and now at 132lbs.7

Thats brilliant well done! I walk quite a bit anyway with my 2 big dogs, iv always done that though. I hate the gym, i did start swimming a lot at one point but gave it up because its too much effort washing and drying my hair every time haha!3

Not necessarily. I found this article really helpful.

It's more what you eat then what you do that contributes to weight loss, I lost the first 60lbs with dieting alone. Sounds like you're already on track though3

I'm walking at least 6-7km a day, but no other exercise at the moment as I've just been too stressed out to eat enough, so trying not to go under my calories, hence no exercise most days - been losing weight just fine.2

Who says it's not advised?
To lose weight, you have to consume fewer calories than you burn. You can do that by eating less, moving more, or both.5 -
All you need is a calorie deficit. You can get it purely from eating less.4

Calories for weightloss. Exercise for fitness. Food for nutrition.
I've lost most of my weight without much deliberate exercise - what can I say? I'm lazy :P12 -
Haha thanks people!0

I've done it before, the first time I dieted. This time around I make a point in exercising.
Its certainly possible to loose without exercising, but I'm a smaller size now with exercise than I was at the same weight dieting without exercise.2 -
What type of exercise?0

I think for both the best chances of long term maintenance of your weight loss and optimal health, it is best to make activities that you enjoy a routine part of your lifestyle.
You can definitely lose weight without exercising.2 -
Walking that much a day is good and counts as exercise anyway x0
-
You know wrong that it is not advised
There are many people who lose weight healthily without exercise and many who can't exercise even if they wanted and still lose in a healthy and sustainable way (I'm from the second group). Exercise is for health, muscle tone, shape etc. Weight loss is about eating less than you burn and by burn I don't mean only intentionally burn but metabolism etc.2 -
The first time I was on MFP, I lost 60lbs just counting calories. No exercise. It definitely works! Personally I feel more motivated when doing both.1

I think when exercise is mentioned most people automatically think this has to be gym exercise or some kind of sport or using equipment or some sort of yoga or aerobic class. Exercise is "an activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness". So can be walking to shop instead of driving. Housework, shopping, using the stairs etc.3

Yep, lost around 50lbs with no exercise at all. I'm now several years into maintenance and I still don't exercise regularly, besides some seasonal walking. I'm in excellent health with consistent great blood work markers.3 -
The first six months of my diet I did no exercise just stayed within my daily calorie goal and lost 42 pounds during that time period. I just started exercise about three weeks ago.3

I lost most of my weight with diet only2

I have lost 57 lbs with no exercise.3

When I think of exercise, I do think of the gym, lol. You're right, it doesn't have to be.1 -
i lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks just walking around the house and at work conducting my foot patrols as a security officer, i get 10 k steps easly plus my MFP plan., its not even hard.

I started without exercise and it was just fine. Most of my exercise frankly has been walking though! I just walked an hour a day. 'real' exercise only 3x a week but I don't think the calorie burn made a huge impact.0

I lose weight consistantly without excersize. Sometimes I have been unable to walk, was bedridden and house bound because of a back injury and that took time to recover. I had physiotherapy excersizes which were designed to build muscle to offset the damage of the back injury. I still do those. I walk a bit and do housework, shopping meal preparation. I Try to take the stairs at least every other day. But weight loss for me has been about selective conscious eating and eating less. Other than the things mentioned I am a sedentary person, reading a lot, playing an instrument and sitting talking.
I know running would probably burn a lot of fat on anyone who does it, as its impossible for me, that is ok. I adjust to what IS and have been successful at weight loss anyway.0 -
It is definitely possible to lose weight without exercise. But you miss out on the benefits that exercise brings, which are numerous. And exercise doesn't have to be crazy and high-impact to be beneficial. Just taking some brisk walks has serious benefits for your heart, muscles, bones, etc.0

Losing weight without exercise was actually the majority of my weightloss: at first I found exercising increased my hunger 10-fold! Eventually I did work exercise in because 1: it increased my deficit and 2: I found out it made me feel good (emotionally and physically). So do what's right for you!1

This all makes me feel a bit more at ease thank you, i havent got the time (or energy after a long day at work) to do much extra than what im already doing. But Since I gave up the swimming I have been losing still and not really any slower thinking about it. I used to swim 1 mile 3 times per week, you would think that would help wouldnt you!0

Can be done I've lost 13lbs in 6 weeks through diet only (and chasing around two little kids2

The first time I lost a significant amount of weight, I lost 50 pounds with no exercise which took 6 months. I started exercising after that, just walking, and another 30 pounds came off pretty easily, in about 7 months.2
-
I have lost without exercising. When I exercise, I tend to feel that I can eat more. Exercise is important but in order to lose weight, it starts with what you eat.2
