Sugar sugar

I am trying to cut my sugar, ive switched to stevia in the raw for daily cup of coffee. Only drink water after that. Don't use artificial sweeteners in anything. Probably 80% of my sugar is from whole foods like fresh fruits/veggies. So I'm wondering I need to be concerned about my sugar. I have no health issues or weight issues

'Concerned' as it relates to what? Because if you have no medical issues (i.e., diabetes), then you don't have to worry about sugar. Sugar is a carb. You need carbs for energy. Eating less calories than you burn in a day is how you lose weight. How many of those calories are carbs is up to you. I currently eat 40% carbs per day, and am losing slowly but steadily.

Other people will recommend no sugar, low carb. I become a complete *kitten* on that type of diet, and cannot do it and stay married. But it if works for you, go for it.

Generally: people without a medical reason to limit sugar can focus on other things instead (like fiber).

Stevia in the Raw has maltodextrin which will result in insulin response. Get the liquid drops instead. Cutting out sugar is one of the best thing you can do for your health.

OP has no health issues -- how will eliminating sugar improve his or her health?

    Spoiler: It won't.

What they said. My dad has Type 2 diabetes. My own glucose is in the high 80s fasting. I asked my MD about my sugar and she said, "Eat what you want. Your dad is risk factor. Your own numbers are a fact. (pause) that's not permission to have a milkshake every day." She may know me too well. LOL!

I don't know if you're male/ female, but if you're male.... lots of sugar has been shown to mess with testosterone levels no matter the source. it's just that fiber helps digest sugar so fruits tend to be a better option as they are higher in fiber than cocoa puffs. It's probably not a huge deal either way but if you're older and already experiencing declining testosterone, or young and looking to maximize performance then it is something to think about.

I'd be interested to see the studies on sugar's effect on testosterone if you wouldn't mind linking to those.

As for fiber, it doesn't so much help digest sugar as it slows the absorption of sugar.

It says there that *eating* may lower levels, so men should fast before a test. It doesn't mention added sugar or "lots of sugar" reducing testosterone (unless I missed it).

That's exactly how I read it also. It states "eating may transiently lower testosterone levels" ...meaning short-term. Nothing stated about long term effects and this appeared to only be relevant to getting it tested.

You didn't miss it. Essentially, it seems to suggest that intake of glucose temporarily lowers free testosterone in the blood and that testing of T levels should thus be done in a fasted state.

It's also worth noting that everything from carrots to broccoli to corn to biscuits to steak to chicken will be broken down into glucose.

The article admits that more research is needed before any conclusions are drawn.

This seems to be no different than the recommendation that one fast before a blood sugar or cholesterol test. It's about the accuracy of test results -- not a prescription for actually raising testosterone levels. Unless one plans to swear off food forever, this isn't going to be a treatment method.

Agree. I was just posting this as a more reputable source for his claim vs the book source.

I personally only worry about added sugar. I only drink water.. To me fruit is completely ok. Its not like you gonna gorge and eat a whole bag of apples or something like you would oreos LOL... I limit the added sugar. I have not cut it out completely I just only allow a certain amount. I believe we need sugar from fruit not from highly processed refined foods.

You may not eat a whole bag of apples, but it's totally possible to exceed calorie goals on fruit. I can easily eat a couple of pounds of pineapple -- I like it more than Oreos.

We don't need sugar from fruit -- someone could live a completely healthy life without ever once eating fruit. But having sugar from processed foods isn't going to harm us either. Our body recognizes sugar as sugar. It doesn't classify the sugar from fruit differently than it does the sugar from an Oreo. Both can fit in a healthy diet, both can be avoided if someone prefers.

last summer there was a really good crop of strawberries. I was eating about a pound a day. So yes, you can gorge on fruit :)

You must not have tried the Red Velvet. I love some pineapple, but I'd rather have a few of these over it any day.

I'm actually down on Oreos in part because of all these new flavors. It's wrong. Oreos should have regular and double stuff only, like when I was a kid. ;-)

Golden Oreos aren't bad (if you are open to non-chocolate Oreos).

I hope you aren't opposed to the MEGA STUFFED :) The only "special" oreo flavor I like are the chocolate crème ones. They had one called a Triple Double where it was cookie-chocolate crème-cookie-regular double stuffed crème-cookie. Those were delicious too!

The triple double is a badmambajamba.

Oreos ranked by order of greatness:
    1 Original
    2 Triple Double
    3 Double Stuf
    4 Brownie Batter
    5 Peanut Butter
    6 Mega Stuf
