I've lost 40 lbs but now I'm ready to tone up, I'm so jiggy... everywhere!
I feel like her dvd just isn't enough. I mean 30minutes a day. Can I build muscle using her dvd?

I don't know about building muscle, but you will build some strength. It may also help reshape your body.
If you are not wanting to start body or weight lifting yet, give it a try.
I just did it one month rather half heatedly and could see results.
Cheers, h.3 -
I didn't notice any discernible difference when I did it. I also yelled profanitites at her, and her voice grates on my nerves. It might help with fat loss but i highly doubt you'd be building any muscle.2

30DS doesn't do any of the work, you do. It's a wonderful 30 minute exercise program.2

30DS is more of a cardio workout. It has nothing to do with training your muscles properly and 'toning' up. In order to do so you'd need more weights and not the tiny pink weights and jumping jacks.0

It works it will help you see some muscle definition in the 30 days, you'll have inch loss and feel a good increase in your fitness level.

I loved it . I always loved her Body Revolution program1

^^ oh boy don't start me on her voice ...!1 -
Congrats on your weight loss! That is awesome! 30DS is a great way to get started on a exercise routine. I personally love Jillian's workouts. I like how she combines cardio and weights to her programs. You can find the 30DS online, along with a lot of her other workouts. My favorites are Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, No More Trouble Zones and Six Week Six Pack. I rotate them depending on how much time I have or what I feel like doing that day. The first two are about 50 minutes for days when you have more time to exercise.
IMO, You won't really gain muscle, but you can reduce body fat doing her programs and eating at a slight deficit, therefore possibly showing more muscle in the long run. If you have access to heavier weights add some weight lifting to your exercise routine. It doesn't have to be at a gym, just some heavier free weights at home can be beneficial too. HTH!1 -
I would love to go to the gym and invest in a personal trainer, but I have 2 kids under 2 years old and so it's a miracle in itself if I fit in a work out every day. I want to build mucsle. Nothing big, but I'm so jiggly and squishy everywhere... where can I start. I have 5, 8 and 10 lbs dumbells at home. What kind of stuff should I be doing for butt, thighs, arms, etc? I'm so new to this and have no idea what to do. I am still losing in a calorie deficit0

Why not look at http://www.startbodyweight.com/? Only be careful with the headstand exercises. the rest has very nice progressions build in. Or if you have a bit of money look at YAYOG. Those are the kind of things you can do at home and you don't really need anything other than a floor mat of sorts, and maybe a table or chairs.0 -
I didn't find it intensive enough, so I canned it after a few days...0

I have had really good success using a variety of fitness videos to increase my muscle tone, including those from Jillian Michaels. As long as you are really pushing yourself and focusing during the videos, and moving up to the next level when you are making progress, you should increase muscle tone. JM videos always use both cardio and strength training to try and help you burn fat and build muscle. If you main goal is toning up, you could always add in some other videos that are more focused on muscle toning only. I really like Jackie Warner's Power Circuit training and Natalie Jill's Rev 4, Body Weight Advanced, and her ab video.0

Also, I forgot to say 30 minutes a day is easily enough! It is all about INTENSITY. You can use heavier weights and move faster. I don't have any idea where you are starting from. But I would say if it does not feel hard when you are doing it, then you will likely not get results. Through it is hard for me to imagine it not feeling hard....

Congratulations! You can start with regular weight lifting exercises - don't need anything fancy. Tricep dips, bicep curls, squats, chest press, overhead press, upright row, etc. The internet is filled with people demonstrating safe techniques. I find that having the weights sitting there is not motivating enough, so I need a workout video or buddy. This is where your kids can come in. Use them as your weights (not at the same time, of course). Try lying on your back, baby in arms and lift him/her up and down over your chest. Lots of idea on line for baby exercises, too. Good luck!0 -
Jillian's 30DS was where I started way back when and, since I fell off the fitness bus, where I have started again!
I completed a 7 week run of 30DS not long ago and I am now doing Jillian's Body Revolution and have Jillian's Body Shred lined up after that.
If you have the will power and drive to train at home plus a little cash to spend on her programmes then I would highly recommend as she really is a great motivator. That said, I see 30DS as more of a gentle break in to exercise than a serious training programme. She really steps it up in some of her later programmes and I am loving Body Revolution even though it is killing me at the moment.
Also, well done on the weight loss!0 -
I loved the 30 ds, I dropped quite a few inches by doing that 7 days a week. I also did her 30 day ripped and felt like it helped to build my strength pretty well. When things get hectic I will go back to her videos, because I can always fit 30 min into my day (even if it means 30 min less sleep).0

Well I went about losing weight all wrong. Dropped my cals to 1200 a day. So I list 40 lbs in a little over 3 months. So, I'm sure I lost a lot of muscle there
I didn't know what I was doing was bad til I joined here and man did I get lectured!
Anyways, I'm feeling g it for sure. I usually do zumba or elliptical for hour but decided I need something to tone all thsee jigglies. I'm so sore......0 -
Wpuld I be better off doing Like 30 mins cardio (I love cardio) and then 30 mins of weights? Just basic stuff like mentioned above with my dumbbells? Or should I stick with dvd0

Every JM workout can work for you, if you can keep consistent. My problem with her workouts ( I have many) is that I can't even sit or walk the next day after most of them, the DOMS are so bad...sometimes for 3 and 4 days after, and I've been working out for years. Love her, but I find her workouts SO aggressive, I don't tend to stick with them for long.1

Don't feel bad- I am sure you lost mostly fat, esp. if you are a woman. Lots of BS merchants on here who live to hector other people from the safety of their computer chair.
30DS is a fab little programme and it was what got me into exercise. I still do Level 2 when time pressed and if you give it your all and use heavy enough dumbbells, it still hurts!
ETA - congrats on your AMAZING weight loss!0 -

It's up to you. I like keeping weighted workouts separate for 2 reasons: 1. I'm a klutz, I really like to focus when using heavy weights 2. I enjoy cardio too! More than strength training (unfortunately).....so keeping cardio separate helps me be consistent with exercise overall (lifestyle changes).
There are tons of videos out there. Free videos on Fitness Blender or DVDs at TotalFitnessDVDs.com and CollageVideo.com
My favorite instructor is Kelly Coffey Meyer.0 -

I have this same exact issue. DOMS from hell....1 -
I really felt waaay more toned after I completed 30 days of the 30DS. I lost at least an inch everywhere I measured and two clothing sizes, but mostly my favorite part was I just didn't feel so jiggly after. I took Saturday's off and attended a spin class on those days. Had my calories set to lose 1.5lbs a week, but wasn't great at all about staying below that calorie goal (mostly from extra wine) and I still lost about 1.5lbs a week. Like everything though, it probably depends on what sort of weight training you need at this point to reach your toning goal. I still had 60lbs to lose at the start of the 30ds, so maybe anything extra would have made me more toned (40lbs to goal now.) I think you can find level 1 of the 30DS on YouTube if you want to try it out first. Also, I have a 1 and a 3 year old, and the 30ds was by far the easiest thing I've tried to fit into my routine thus far (even the gym with great daycare takes a lot of more planning and travel time to get us out of the house and there. Walking/running with a stroller inevitably ends up in one of the kids crying or me needing to stop a lot to handle something with them.)2

I'm Sooooo sore!!!!!0 -
What are DOMS, my best guess is some kind of muscle spasms related to sudden use of forgotten muscles. I'm starting the program on the 11th and want to know what to expect0

It got me started. I completed the program, and then hopped around, doing which ever workout I felt like doing during the following weeks, and increased the amount of weight I was using as I got stronger. But even with three different workouts on the DVD, it gets boring doing the same thing, so it was a good start, but I eventually wanted more.
It definitely helped me get started though, and increased my flexibility, strength and endurance as I went through it, at least once I got past the initial soreness, which many of you are mentioning! All I had when I started was 5lb dumbbells that I'd had for years, so I used those...and then I could barely walk or move for three days. I mean I told my husband that if the house caught fire he'd have to carry me out or leave because I wouldn't be able to move fast enough on my own! LOL I went out and bought 2 and 3 lb dumbbells, and when I could move again, continued using those until I built up some strength. Now I have dumbbells all the way up to 30lbs, and yes I do use them, but not with Jillian DVDs.

Yes, Google it never heard of the term til this post. But I'm on day 4 since first time I worked out using dvd and still ALL my muscles are sore to the touch! I had to take a break last night. I did zumba instead of dvd.1
