Fellow MFP, I'm curious to know how everyone counters setbacks. And by setbacks I mean everything from not meeting a weight goal, going overboard at dinner, injury etc.
I'm personally having a setback and trying to work on the best way to comeback!

I don't let setbacks bother me. I usually just resume my plan the next day and move on.

I don't worry over much about weight goals. Least not with deadlines. I'm not a fan of those lol.
Calorie goals on the other hand, if I happen to go over, I log it and move on.

I do not have setbacks. Everything about this is my choice. For instance, this morning the scale shows that I'm 3 lbs heavier than my lightest recorded weight. No problem. That was just good information, feedback about my choice to eat well with my family in the last 2 days. I want to lose some weight now. I'll just reduce my food intake and exercise a bit more. Everything's good and easy to do because it matches my desire.

I don't call it a "setback," I call it "life happens." Looking back over the decades, I have encountered many peaks and valleys. All have been valuable, even those that were painful. In the large scheme of things, "going overboard at dinner" is miniscule. Illnesses, injuries, loss of loved ones, financial insecurities - traversing those hasn't killed me yet :)

I suffered a pretty big setback a few months ago when I injured my knee and tore my meniscus and ACL. I took about 6 weeks off from tracking while dealing with surgery, recovery, and depression. In the past I would have eaten my feelings but seeing how far I've come I just couldn't do that to myself this time. I kept up with the healthy eating habits I've developed over the past year of tracking and then got back to it when I was ready. During the time when I wasn't tracking I maintained, which was a huge victory for me.

I'm still looking at another surgery, an even more difficult recovery period, and then it will still be another year until I can return to my beloved Ultimate Frisbee. I consider this whole thing a pretty significant setback, but I also know that I can get through it and win.

Perspective. I try to view setbacks as part of the process to becoming a better, stronger version of myself. Also, focus on the bright side of a bad time. A couple years ago I had an abdominal hysterectomy and wasn't allowed to do much of anything for 6 weeks. Instead of worrying about the fitness downfall, I appreciated how much my prior fitness level helped my recovery. Within a few days, when I should've been mostly bedridden, I was taking slow walks around town with my dog. Within a few weeks, I felt good enough to travel 10 hours one-way by myself to visit family. It was like a (very painful) vacation! Things happen. All you can do is make the best of it and move on.

Last week was an off one for me. I've had a very productive year losing, but I snacked a lot the last few days, enjoyed chocolate at work, and ate far more than I should. I continued to log and exercise. I also weighed every day. I am up a few lbs but I have gotten back on track the last two days and the water weight/gain is steadily decreasing. This last year has taught me patience and the fact that I'm going to have off days...planned and unplanned. In the past I'd quit, be hard on myself, or think I couldn't do this. Now, I know I can. Think about your plan. What works for you? What foods/snacks do you enjoy? When is the best time for you to exercise? Fall right back in. Life happens! Be kind to yourself. Changing your habits/thinking is the key.
