not grams. Unless it's water at 4°C.

Depends where you live. A metric cup is 250ml, a US cup is approx. 236ml.

    I go by 250ml

I hate, hate, hate when I see recipes with cup and spoon measurements. I always try to convert to grams and ml, sometimes it works, other times the recipe turns out no where near right :confounded:

If you use 250ml on a USA recipe - you are doomed

I swapped cup and spoon for measuring with an American online friend since I'm in Australia. Makes it easy. I just have to keep them separate so I don't mix them with my metric ones.

You got your answer to the cup question from all the great people above, but I would say weigh everything, don't just go by the suggested serving size in cups. If I get a 1/4 of a cup of cashews as a serving size like the package says (28g or 1/4 cup) it weighs differently everytime I fill it up, so always use the grams or ounce serving size, so you don't over or under eat.

oz - can be used to measure weight or liquid (volume)

8 oz of water [liquid] does not weigh the same as 8 oz of butter [solid]

A cup is always referring to volume/liquid, not weight

Sounds like you were using ounces by weight. When people say 8 ounces in a cup, they mean volumetric ounces.

Ikea does a measuring jug which has cups on it. I find it incredibly useful as some of my favourite recipes are from the US and aren't metric :/

Thanks so much everyone. I especially like the idea of the measuring jug from Ikea #wotsitaddict. Thank you :)
