Calorie restricting and feeling gross

ive been with MFP for about 2 months and following along with the 1200 a day recommended calories.. At first it was hard and I felt hungry all of the time and now I'm having trouble even getting up to 1200? I just feel so full and fat after eating the smallest amount. Any help? I don't want to negatively affect my health but I still want to lose weight :( I'm 18 by the way

    1200 calories isn't recommended for everyone to lose weight. People can lose weight on more calories depending on their size and activity level. If you are having trouble eating 1200 calories, maybe you should try more calorie dense foods if you are feeling full.

    I haven't. I don't have a good scale and, honestly, doubt I would if I had one. I just usually keep track by the nutrition facts labels.

    I have tried except, I don't really know how. I really hate eating meat..like a lot. I physically get sick at the thought of it so I try to fill up on fruits, veggies, beans, etc. And as you know those don't have as many calories as a big steak. Other than that, the only foods that are really calorie dense that I can think of are the processed junky foods and I obviously don't want to fill up on those either.

    About the age thing...I'm not really sure why it said I was older?? Ha I changed it.

    Well then it could be a possibility that you are reaching the 1200 or more calorie goal. Estimating and just reading food labels is not how the MFP process is supposed to work. Calorie counting is not caloire estimating.

    Question: what does this mean exactly: "just feel so full and fat after eating" ???? Are over eating your meal(s) to the point you feel sick or is eating food a problem for you in general?

    And are you trying to lose weight? If so, how much? How many calories per day (approximately) were you eating before starting MFP?

I don't want to underfeed myself but on the other hand if I eat any more food I just feel terrible.

    Nuts and seeds are calorie dense and great if you're trying to avoid meat in general. It's always best to weigh them out rather than guess if you're having a correct serving.

    There are other calorie dense foods besides meats that are healthy and unprocessed such as peanut butter, avocados, whole grains, etc.

    You know, nothing has ever been diagnosed but I used to binge snack after school sometimes. It was really excessive amounts of food but I've never had a problem with not being able to eat enough

    I need to lose weight and tone up a little, about 20 more lbs would put me at 150 which is my goal. Before MFP I was in season for volleyball and training a lot so I was at like 2200-2500 a day which was probably still a little much but now I'm in off season and I just go to the gym every day but I'm not training as hard.

    I wouldn't exactly say eating disorder..more like just really low self esteem. But until now I've never altered my eating really except for the fact that I used to eat a lot more and have occasional binges

    Feeling gross, eating excessively low calories, and having difficulty eating much more than some strawberries makes me concerned that you may be slipping in to restrictive eating tied to body image without consciously realizing the source. If you continue to experience this I would strongly recommend talking to your doctor - it's not normal to have difficulty finishing a bowl of fruit and nothing more, or to feel "gross" and "fat" on the amount of calories you say you're eating.

    Well I am thankful for your concern, I hadn't really looked at it that way..I'll try to eat my small amounts more often and see if that fixes anything

    This. I used to cycle through different eating periods, going from eating too much to eating too little and back again and again, and I've felt exactly how you're describing you feel.. full after a couple bites, like I couldn't possibly eat anymore. Now that I've broken out of that cycle, I can see that what I thought was a true lack of appetite was really my feelings toward food and weight loss and control that were manifesting as lack of appetite. I wouldn't have believed it back then because it seems crazy that something in my head could result in such a real, physical feeling, but I know now that's exactly what was going on. I've never had a full-on eating disorder, but I definitely had disordered eating behaviors and thoughts.

    Just from what you're describing it sounds like you may be slipping into ED territory-do you have insurance that you could get a referral from your doctor to meet with a specialist? A registered dietician may be able to help you navigate through this and get you on the right path :)
