I used to work at PF. If you've signed a contract for a 10$ or Black Card membership, you'll have to either pay your buyout fee ($58 plus tax in my area) or wait until you've completed your year. (PF haters: it's clearly stated in the registration paperwork.) You can either fill out a cancellation form at the front desk or mail a letter via certified mail stating you wish to cancel. You cannot cancel if you have a balance. You really don't have to give any reason, if they ask, you can either be honest about your reasons or just tell them you don't use it enough, simple as that. If you give a week's notice or more before your next monthly payment, you shouldn't have to pay that extra month. However, here, fees are withdrawn the 17th of every month, so you'd have to pay for May, but you'd still have access to the gym until the 16th of June. Hope that helps! :)

A lot of it does indeed depend on your membership type. When they put in the new on by us, we signed up before they opened via the website for the No $ down, $10/month no commitment plan.

We went in on the first day they were supposed to be open but they weren't ready and we somehow lost our motivation and never actually went in and used the services. I let it drag on and just never cancelled for nearly 2 years in part because I told myself I was GONNA go and I just didn't feel like going in and dealing with the hassle of cancelling the memberships.

Eventually I did decide to go in and it was no big deal. I told them I wanted to cancel our memberships and they said "OK. I am sorry to hear that." I filled out a small slip acknowledging I was cancelling the memberships and they stopped taking money out the following month. Easy as pie.

If you have one of the larger plans, like the $20 PF Black plan, it is a bit tougher because you sign a contract for the 1 or 2 year plan as I recall. Cancelling that means a buyout fee.

Wait..... They try to forbid what type of water bottle you bring?!? That would be an immediate no, refuse to join.

A few guys do it where I work. I don't really get it. They come in with a full or half-full jug and when they leave, there's not much gone from it. Maybe they're doing the "gallon a day" thing and that's how they like to carry water. I don't really care. It's water. Why anyone would say you can't have a certain amount of water is beyond me. "Because it's weird" isn't a good reason. Members can get an unlimited supply of refrigerated filtered water out of the fountain, so what's a gallon of their own?

I see your point. I guess out of all the reasons I've heard not to join Pf, this would rank very low. I would never even think of it :).

Go to the front desk and tell them you want to cancel. They will give you a form to fill out. If it's before the 10th of the month, you won't pay next month, if it's after, you will but then not after that. At least that was how it was when I cancelled two PF's before. I moved a few times so I got used to it. But I have also rejoined the one near me. It's a nice gym but I don;t go until after 7PM or so as they are too busy before that and I hate crowds.

I have one that I carry at work. It's a good way to regulate how much water I've had for the day, and don't have to get up to get refills if I don't want to.

Either way what PF is doing with that rule is perpetuating the stereotype of only moron bodybuilders (lunks...morons) carry water jugs around.

Because people can trip over them - Same for the idiots that don't use lockers and carry around their gym bags.

They don't allow gallon jugs for the same reason they don't allow gym bags on the floor. It gets in the way, and is a hazard. The cup holders they have will accomodate most normally sized drinks. There really is no reason to have that much water anyhow. I've been using the same 20oz Aquafina bottle since August. The only time I need more than that 20 ounces is when I do multiple cardio workouts. I just refill it between.

Not allowing sandals is also for safety. The other rules are just stupid, though.

People don't leave small water bottles on the floor plus you could literally break your toe on one of those gallon jugs.

I was considering joining Planet Fitness until I read this post...plus heard about the set up being mostly cardio and I hate cardio! Anyway, yea, you can cancel your membership at any time but if you just recently signed a one year term with them...they might make you pay it in full to break it. Best of luck.

Yeah, if you want to do weight training, stay away from PF. Unless you like Smith machines, that is. I hate them, so I just do cardio there.

I spend the majority of my 10 hour shift walking up and down the aisles of a fitness center where we do allow gallon jugs and I barely even notice them except when the guys are checking in or leaving. They put them under racks and such. The rule shouldn't be "no jugs." It should be "aisles must be kept clear," which is actually already a rule.

The rule should be whatever rule they choose to enforce, as is their right. Out of all the ridiculousness at PF, you guys are focusing on something that isn't, and shouldn't be an issue. If you want to harp on them, then do so about their hypocrisy, dress code, and woeful weight section, not the safety rules.

Besides, if you've been to a PF, then you'd realize there is no where to safely place them out of the way, unless you are on the weight machines. The majority of the floor space is cardio equipment, and they are packed in pretty tight. This rule makes perfect sense as it pertains to PF.

I would give them all your feedback in a polite, constructive way (except the sandals thing, that really is a safety issue). Your opinion is legitimate and you're probably not the only person to feel that way. If no one ever says anything, nothing ever changes. Stand up for yourself and for those coming after you.

At the very top of my Club Agreement the space for 'Expiration' is/was left blank. I joined September 2015 so I figured the 'expiration' would say September 2016.
Unless this is unlimited..? Not sure..

Does this mean I can actually quit at any time..?
I guess I just need to pop over there and talk to them.
Kind of just wondering how it works or what to expect and any advice, especially since I have read horror stories online about quitting with them.
    Thanks all!!!!

When I first joined PF, the first few months were great. The gym was still brand-new to our area, so it was never busy. That was Sept-Oct-Nov-Dec of last year. Then come January, they got busy. Crazy-busy. The parking lot is usually so filled that I have to wait for someone to leave, and I am just one that is not comfortable with people right next to me on the treadmill hacking all over the place for whatever reason (how am I to know they are or are not sick..?)--which surprisingly happens way more than you think. The locker room is always even busy. I am just not comfortable with a place being that busy (read: anxiety).

And then there is the dress code. I know it seems silly, but I really wish I could wear sandals when I am on the treadmill, or other 'no-no' clothing. I am not in the weight room area, so I do not understand. But that is their rules.

And for the love of God they play the same 10 songs over and over. When I go there almost daily for 2 hours at a time, it is like hearing the same CD over and over 3 or 4X a day!! Blah...(I do not like to wear ear plugs)

Yes I know the bulk of my issues are my own personal issues, but there are what they are.

What do I need to do to quit Planet Fitness..?
I am sure the manager (whom I kind of get along with well) will want to know why, and I just prefer not to say, so if I (very likely) quit, what is a good thing to say that she will not 'pry' to find out why..?

    Thanks so much!! :)

Honestly, the things you describe mean you cannot go to any gym, not just Planet Fitness. Sandals on a treadmill? Not wanting other people in the treadmills next to you? I do not think you can quit any gym, unless your contracts says so, in which case, follow whatever procedure they have? Just consider this a lesson learned and avoid gyms. Maybe walk/run instead outdoors?

I have one that I carry at work. It's a good way to regulate how much water I've had for the day, and don't have to get up to get refills if I don't want to.

Either way what PF is doing with that rule is perpetuating the stereotype of only moron bodybuilders (lunks...morons) carry water jugs around.

It's because people can trip over them - Same for the idiots that don't use lockers and carry around their gym bags.

You can trip over a small water bottle as well so this makes no sense.

Like I said, they have cup holders. Every machine has at least one. It does make sense.

Every weight machine has a cup holder on it?

    1. Grunt loudly as you exercise.
    2. Walk in with a gallon water jug.
    3. Continue to wear forbidden clothing like tank tops.
    4. Pretty much act like a "bro" and your membership will be terminated.

Wait..... They try to forbid what type of water bottle you bring?!? That would be an immediate no, refuse to join.

I assumed it was a play on this Planet Fitness ad:

Their lunk alarm signs say something about a gallon jug too.

    Wow. Just no.

People don't leave small water bottles on the floor plus you could literally break your toe on one of those gallon jugs.

I do all the time. There's no place else to put them in the lifting area. I usually put my towel tight next to it.

You could break your toe on a gallon jug? Lulz, you're trying too hard.

I suspect someone is a PF member...

    *rolls eyes*

another reason I am so glad I get to have a home gym....

Yeah. Carrying around a jug of water seems weird to me, but forbidding others from doing it seems way weirder.

Also, as a member of a gym without such a rule, I really haven't noticed it being a problem, so odd.

Have you tried a different PF? They are all over the place.
I've used many different gyms, what you mention happens. Every gym in earth gets super crowed in January and spring. There's rude people that don't know gym etiquette everywhere, I never let that bother me. To me, gym is for going in and out. I don't bother myself with others.
I would try a different one, try going on different times of the day. Try and accept that gyms are a place you share with others and *kitten* happens.
If that doesn't work, just go to the front desk and quit.
