Calorie counting on MFP

I'm working hard to keep an accurate count on my calories but am finding it increasingly difficult to find the answers on here. Fresh fish for example has calorie counts on the database where the difference in calories on two different entries can be a 100% difference. Does anyone know a better way?

Cross check against the USDA database.2

Thanks, I tried that. I seached for fresh haddock and fresh salmon and the results on both occasions came up with: 'The page you have requested cannot be located. Please check the address you are using and try again if incorrect. Please contact the NAL Helpdesk at userhelp@rt.nal.usda.gov if you would like further assistance.'0

best thing to do is add all your own foods, from packaging or the above site, then you know it's correct and no one can change it, as everything on the database can be changed and usually added incorrectly by other people.3 -
Take 3 or 4 entries and average it out?
If in doubt, take the higher calorie entry....so if it is actually less (and your goal is to lose weight) then it benefits you.1 -

I do this whenever I can but buying food fresh from the market rather than the supermarket, I don't have a barcode to scan.0 -

When you scan a barcode it takes the food from the database which has been added by someone on MFP and you never know if it's correct (unless you check of course) You can add foods manually, just click on the "My foods" tab at the top, then "create food" on the right of the screen and add your foods.1 -
Fresh haddock: https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/4515?fgcd=&manu=&lfacet=&format=&count=&max=35&offset=&sort=&qlookup=haddock
Fresh salmon: https://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/4565?fgcd=&manu=&lfacet=&format=&count=&max=35&offset=&sort=&qlookup=salmon
I got the same error as you when I went back and tried to search for the salmon from the main page. I had to refresh that main page to get the second search to work. If you search for an item, get your info, then go back and search from that page, you should be good to go. I didn't get any errors when doing it that way.2 -

That's fantastic! Many thanks. When there are differences on the MFP database I usually go for the highest, just to be on the safe side and these you've posted are LOADS less than the ones I chose!3
