Like the title says, I'm insulin resistant. Just found this out today. I've been "on" this site for a while, but couldn't really manage to lose weight so I gave up. My doctor told me that the reason why I'm having so much trouble is that I'm insulin resistant, meaning I'm not diabetic, but my body has to produce double the insulin needed to break down sugar. I've tried cutting back meals, one or two a day, I work grave so eating normally is hard and my kid is P.M. kindergarten so sleep is weird. Doc is putting me on a low carb diet, but I honestly don't know what carbs or calories, such things are. was told as a kid, eat less move more, so far that hasn't done much. Open to advice and help.

Ask your doctor for a referral to a registered dietician. I encourage you to address this now, before it develops into diabetes. You can reverse it with nutrition and exercise, and now is the "easiest" time to do it.2

I was getting insulin resistant last year, which was what brought me here. You can reverse it by losing weight. Mine cleared up, just as my doctor predicted it would. Don't get caught up in the medication routine instead.0

You may end up becoming type 2 regardless of your dietary changes... that's the bad news... the good news is you are here and presumably ready to make the lifestyle changes necessary to avoid becoming type 2... ( I am type 2 BTW) SO... the most important thing is to lose weight and gain muscle... BUT don't think of "diet" as a short term reduction in calories in order to lose weight... think diet as a way to supply the proper nutrition to your body in order to make the "machine" run and function properly... think balanced diet, and healthy eating... diet is not about depriving yourself it is about ensuring you intake the right nutrients in the right amounts to lead a healthier happier life free of medication and potential complications due to your insulin resistance. and based on current medical research carbs ARE the enemy... a few years ago it was Fats... next week it might be something else... but for now a reduced carb diet is key... the good news is that it means more protein... protein will be your friend... it will keep you fuller longer... so bear that in mind... and understand that protein is NOT just meat...
it is also important to help your body out with exercise... regular steady state cardio to start... no "joggin" or running unless this is something you already do... it's the quickest way to an injury.. UNLESS you follow a program like C25K... if you are content to stay home...that's cool .. there are plenty of online resources that will get you moving...
and don't think this is the end of the world... think of it as a wake up call...for some people... diet and exercise is something they can take for granted their entire lives... for others... like you... and me... and millions of others... it has become a necessity to maintain a drug free quality of life... THE Good news... you have some incentive to become the healthiest and fittest you that has ever walked the planet.

Hello!! Welcome! I am insulin resistant as well. My dad was insulin resistant and pre-diabetic...Guess what....his is gone and mine is on the way out!

I am insulin resistant as well.. with type 2 diabetes.. I have quite a bit of difficulty losing weight *kitten* well.. however; I will tell you the only things that has ever helped me was/is HIGH protein diets and tons of cardio. Which is what I'm just now starting again after having my 3rd child. Since May 4th I've lost 16 pounds.. still tons more to go for me.. Best wishes to you and accomplishing your goals!0

Hi. I was diagnosed many years ago and have completely reversed it by keeping a high protein diet and some exercise. My diet consists of meats, some beans, and dairy, especially cheese, and salad, all within my calorie limits. This is what my gastroenterologist recommended for me.
You can do this! I started the same way when I was diagnosed, high protein and low carb, and I felt amazing, which was a drastic change from wanting to sleep every 5 seconds. It's a bit of a shock at first, but it's worth it.
