Has your doctor advised you to go low carbohydrate *and* low fat? Usually people on low carbohydrate plans don't also go low fat.3

Dr said nothing just to cut down on carbs and sugers0

If a doctor has diagnosed you with a medical condition that requires an alteration in your diet, he, his nurse, or a nutritionist should provide you education of what their goals are for you, and food suggestions.
Did this doctor tell you how to determine net carbs? How much sugar to "cut down on"? Knowing that a serving of fruit may be different for you now? That's the stuff you need to know from HIM, not those of us that have no medical license..or even if we do, we cannot legally offer medical advice. I'd speak with my doctor again.
Good luck to you!1 -
I'd ask for a referral to a registered dietitian.
Balancing carbs with protein and fat is typically recommended.
Try setting your macros in your diary to whatever was recommended (if nothing was, maybe try something like 40-30-30 or 30-35-35 to start).
Low carb AND low fat isn't really recommended. Sugars are carbs. Being picky about your source of carbs may be a good idea -- choosing things with more fiber. Lower sugar fruits like berries, of course vegetables. Whole grains instead of refined grains. Reducing high cal sweets if you eat them, avoiding sugary drinks, as they tend to spike blood sugar.
Often just losing the weight will help if you have weight to lose.
If you log your food you can see if you are tending to eat mostly carbs at particular meals and add in more protein and fat to balance it.
I'm not pre diabetic, but I tend to plan my meals around a source of protein (fish, other meat, legumes, dairy, eggs) plus vegetables and then add in some higher carb food (like potato, grains) depending on desire and calories and so on. If you think of it this way it's pretty easy to control the amount of carbs vs. fat and protein.1 -

As a pre-diabetic, you do want to track your sugar intake and keep it in check.
Veggies, whole grains (still, check labels), lean cuts of meat (chicken breast, pork loin, sirloin...) are your friend.
That said, the biggest thing you can do for yourself right now is lose weight and get active (the two biggest known causes of diabetes other than genetics are obesity and a sedentary lifestyle).
You'll want to plug your stats into MFP, set a weight loss goal and it'll give you a calorie goal. Weigh and log all your food (measure all liquids) and stick to that calorie goal. As for protein and fat, you want to get enough of each. Shoot for .8 grams of protein per pound of goal weight and .4 grams of fat.
Stick with that and your weight should drop while your health improves.
Stick in there! You can beat diabetes before it happens.0 -

Are you MFP's version of a hanging judge? ;-)0

Pinterest has killer recipes. All you have to do is put in Low Carb. Don't drop your fats though. Either one or the other. My whole family is diabetic with the exception of myself. I eat a low carb diet and have dropped all the pre-diabetic symptoms, especially since I added exercise.0

I think you misunderstood what went on...
Double post means that lemurcat accidentally posted a second response by mistake. So when she said "oops, my bad" I poked a little fun at her. She and I are friends. No one was hating on anyone.0 -

The double post comment wasn't about you. It referred to my posting my own comment twice because of the issues Vanilla was having earlier.
Now I'm just so delighted I tried to help!0 -

The person who mentioned the double post was talking about their own post. They were not judging you or even referring to you. There is no need to label anyone a "hater."0 -
Apologies peeps lol xxx1

I'm pre-diabetic as well, feel free to peruse my diary for ideas. I cut back on all sugar where possible (obviously I can't remove natural sugars from blackberries or raspberries) and stick to low carb. I usually have one cheat meal every week or two as well, Sunday was my last one
Things I usually eat: Chicken, pork, ham, hamburger patties, cheese, broccoli, cauliflower, eggs (fried, boiled, scrambled, as an omlette), celery, romaine lettuce, green onions, red/green pepper, spinach, ranch dressing, brussel sprouts with bacon, heavy whipping cream, almond milk, almonds, quest bars, dark chocolate. I found a huge bag of frozen stir fry veggies at Costco and have been eating that a lot lately, it's really good and you can throw whatever protein you want with it.
Healthy fats that are easy to add are Avocados, olive oil, real butter or coconut oil.
Occasionally steak but that's moreso a personal choice that I don't eat it often.
Look up low carb on MFP, Pintrest, Reddit, Instagram and you tube, you'll find tons of resources.
As far as low fat goes, I'd stay away from anything low fat because they tend to add sugars, but I'll leave that up to your Dr and you to decide.0 -
I agree with seeing a dietitian... low fat and low carb aren't generally done together. Besides, fat is extremely important for our body to function correctly.lemurcat12 wrote: »Are you MFP's version of a hanging judge? ;-)
