    Fixie and single speed are different bikes, a fixie doesn't have a free hub and requires you pedal at all times, a single speed has a freehub and as the name suggests has a single gear.

    as @Hornsby said, they usually have a 2 rings on either side of the rear that you can flip for different ratios.

    IMO a bike without brakes is moronic, I hear people say oh but its a fixie I'll just stop pedalling. Anyone who rides bikes or motorcycles will know the power difference between the front and rear brake.

    I ride front and bike brakes on my fixed.

    Don't care if that doesn't make me cool, Brakes have saved my life for sure where skid stopping wouldn't of been enough.

    Just getting back into fixed riding. Had my fuji track stolen in 2013, and was gifted a gnarly all gold no name bike. Its not the best ride, but it's a ride to get me back into shape.... I definitely missed riding!

    The fixed bikes look awesome. I would love to try one out. However, I just can't bring myself to plunk down the cash for one though.

    So...

    ...I just burn a gazzilion calories on my $600 Jamis Allegro hybrid mountain bike on the very flat, very straight KATY trail. If I want leg day - I sprint until I drop.

    You can find them pretty cheap these days. Under 300 for a complete bike.

    I use both, MTB and a botch job fixie from a run off the mill 70's frame. I got front brakes; hilly and I weigh 240.

    It is a dangerous combination, using freewheeling and fixie at the same time. Not once it twice have I forgotten which bike I'm on. With the fixie it usually means a good distance flying in the air.

    It's kind of like a standard or an automatic in a car; you can do that in a sports car or a truck. A fixed gear is a bike that only has one gearing combination, and that the pedals turn whenever the back wheel does. You could set a mountain or road bike up that way if you wanted to. Obviously you lose the ability to change gears, but in exchange you get mechanical simplicity and a ride that builds supple legs because it requires good pedaling form.

    Also good tires are expensive.

    Haha you blow through tires on a fixed gear if you are too cool for brakes
