Are you following any particular program?

Oh, and I wouldn't suggest doing anything to normally leave the gym sore.

    Soreness doesn't equal effectiveness.

Are you following a program? Winging it?

In that case, no, you're not doing it right.

Get on a tried and true beginner's lifting program, such as StrongLifts, Starting Strength, or All-Pro's Beginner. Follow the program you choose. Don't modify it unless you need to due to previous injury or available equipment - no matter what you think, you don't know better. And if you do have to modify it, ensure you're substituting something that's adequately comparable.

Winging it is definitely the way to go.

He was being sarcastic. You're essentially wasting your time if you're not on a structured lifting program based on your goals that's been drawn up by an actual trainer. Along with a structured diet once again falling in line with your current goals. You don't need to be sore to make progress, but you do need to be on a program that allows for progression.
