How long?

Granted I am way out of shape. I've been doing water aerobics for three days a week the past two weeks. I do enjoy the class and I won't quit. While it is easy on my knees, I'm wondering at what point I stop hurting all the time? Sometimes the pain keeps me from sleeping. Is there a point where I will actually look forward to this exercise without anticipating pain for the following 48 hours?

Have you seen a doctor prior to your starting exercise and including asking them regarding your knee issue?

Is this problem just occurring or ongoing? Have thought maybe doing less classes per week until your knees feel a little better and swim laps instead?

Thanks for your replies. I'm sure much of the knee pain is due to my weight, but I can't lose weight without doing something physical. I picked water aerobics b/c I thought it would lower the impact on my knees and ankles. It does, while I'm doing it, but for days after everything is achy. It's not like a torn tendon, just achy. I realize it's a gauge of just how far out of shape I am, but it would be *nice* to know that down the road the pain would ease. I'm trying very hard not to be discouraged, but that's difficult when you can hardly walk the next day...... :/

You still don't say if a doctor was seen before you started this. In the case of pain due to weight and exercising, sometimes the negatives outweigh the positives until weight is lost. To lose weight, you need a calorie deficit, not exercise per se. I would first consult a doctor and cut back to maybe two days a week until you are sure that no damage is being done. Better to stay on the safe side before you're left with an overuse injury.

Thanks, and yes I did talk to a doctor. He was the one that recommended water aerobics because it's low impact.

To the bolded, actually yes you can lose weight without exercising. Eat less calories than you burn. I don't know what you weigh but it might be better if you lose some weight first before you start doing so much exercising.

If you think it's overall muscle ache then make sure you are eating enough protein, drinking enough water, and take a potassium supplement too.

It should hurt for a day or two and remember not to stop exercising through the pain if you believe it is standard muscle ache that we all get after working out harder than what our body is used to.

The goal is to get your body to flush out the lactic acid trapped in your muscles. When we move that helps flush by getting our blood moving, when we drink water it helps too. Potassium does the opposite of salt, salt helps retain water, potassium helps rid the body of retained water.
