Hey everyone , I have a question , I go to the city pool almost everyday and they at the snack bar they have very delicious hot dogs , I do eat one everyday I go but for my drink I drink water or flavored water which is just 5 calories cause it's one of the packs for my drink. Not sure if I can give up the hot dogs.Do you think just 1 hot dog a day at the pool is acceptable?

1 hot dog a day... anywhere (not just at the pool) is fine as long as it fits within your calorie budget. Granted, there are healthier calories out there, but I wouldn't stress about it if you have the room in your budget.

Now the real question is.... mustard PLUS ketchup... or just mustard???

Count the calories. And if you have to give up anything, make it the white bread bun. And as far as I'm concerned, the only way to eat a hot dog is with sauce and slaw.

I'm gonna say no. Bring your own food with you. Hot dogs are crap. Have one once a week if you like, but not every day.

ETA: I'm all for everything in moderation, but we can't use "everything in moderation" as an excuse for lack of discipline. Bring something healthy with you to the pool. After that becomes your routine, I guarantee you, you will start to prefer to eat your food over the hot dog 9 times out of 10.
  • I think it really depends upon how many calories you take in. :flowerforyou:

Hot dogs are comprised of uteruses and foreskins. Delicious, though.

I don't know if I'd do one a day because of the nitrates, but otherwise it really depends upon the dogs they use, the buns they use, and the toppings you put on. A Nathan's or Hebrew National big dog can nail you for well over 200 calories just for the dog, plus another 150-200 for the bun. If you add cheese, chili, or some other heavy topping, you could be looking at 500+ calories for a single hot dog. In your place, I'd ask them what kind of hot dogs, what kind of buns, and then figure out the calories/fat/sodium and work from there. If it's not too high and works into your daily plan, I don't see any reason why not. If it's too much, maybe cutting it down to a couple of times a week would be work for you. I certainly wouldn't recommend cutting them out entirely--why do that to yourself if you love them?

Yeah, I'm with taso42. Processed to the max, too salty...

Try Hebrew Nation 97% fat free hot dogs right after you get home from swimming. 40 cals a piece, so with one slice of whole wheat Sara Lee 45 cal bread would be an okay swap.

If you want to talk yourself out of a hotdog, think of it like this. Hot dogs are made of the stuff they sweep up off the floor. Ok, not exactly true, but they are just what's left over. still gross! BUT I also have one from time to time, when I'm at a BBQ and I don't trust the griller to cook the hamburgers all the way thru.

I think i would give up the hot dog everyday; maybe pack a lunch something with less calories; and if u have bad blood pressure or high cloystrol a hot dog can effect yu. Hot dogs are high in fat.

Well im allowed 1200 calories a day unless it's a cheat day of course , lol Well im guessing there the oscar mayer and it's on a white bun is how they make them at the pool.I don't get any chips with it or anything like that , Today I bought some of the slim fast peanut butter crunch bars and I thought that would hold me over but it didn't so I had to get a hotdog. One thing I been eating lately is a side salad and one of the lean cuisne pizza's or the lean cuisine cheese ravioli , maybe if I eat extra healthy on the hot dog days maybe that will balance it out?

Are you swimming laps at the pool? I know that swimming makes me ravenous! Someone may lose their fingers if they didn't hand me my hotdog fast enough if I just finished swimming a bunch of laps.

Slim fast bars? Lean Cuisines? I think you need a pretty drastic change in diet/lifestyle. That stuff should be for emergencies only. If you eat wholesome, real foods, your body will look, feel, and operate better than ever.

I eat lean cuisnes cause there quick and really good and then I still have calories left.I don't eat them all the time though but I do like them alot.Yes I do swim laps , makes me pretty hungry afterwards.Another thing I am curious about is if I was to eat something like chicken strips and fries would that be acceptable long as it's under my calorie limit?I don't want to go over at all just making sure something on that order is ok here and there long as it's within your limit

Listen, I think you know that a hot dog every day is not a good idea or you wouldn't have asked. Seriously, google what's in them, not just the parts but the sodium and fat. When you google it you'll see all of the warnings about nitrates and whatever else is in there. Trying to justify it by eating health-ish the rest of the day does not negate the horrible ingredients in that hot dog. It's still going into your body into your liver and kidneys and arteries. If you must, have one a week. And all that other lean cuisine and slimfast stuff isn't going to help you either.

    You know, since you asked.

chicken strips and french fries are likely deep fried, which has "Bad" written all over it.

Yeah, chicken strips and fries are probably not good unless you're planning on breading and baking your own strips and slicing/spicing/baking your own "fries." It's what we do at home, and it's amazingly good, but it's not very quick or convenient, and not likely an option when you're out and about.

You are trying to rationalize a way to eat some crappy food like hot dogs or chicken strips every day. Rationalize all you want, but the answer is still going to be that it's a bad idea. Reserve one day a week for eating anything you want, including ice cream, hot dogs, fried chicken, pound cake, and pizza. Have at it. The other 6 days of the week, eat real, nutritious food.

It's ok to splurge once in a while. But it should be the exception; not the rule.

Are you just going to keep asking until someone says it's ok?

Fine - it's ok. Eat hot dogs every day. Enjoy.

id say too much sodium for someone watching their weight, but its up to you. One a day isnt going to kill you, but its probably not going to be doing you any favours with your diet.

Ummm seriously?? If you subsist solely on fried foods (chicken strips and fries) or on your daily hotdog fix (gross!) your not doing your body ANY favors. Actually, you ultimately are going to make it harder on yourself to lose weight, even if you are staying UNDER your calorie goal.. because your feeding your body absolute crap! Think of all the chemicals you're ingesting.. NOT GOOD!

Try turkey breast sandwiches on whole wheat... carrots with hummus... a piece of fruit for God's sake!!
You can't expect to lose weight just based on your calorie intake and activity level alone.. a HUGE part of it is TYPE of food too!
    God Bless...

While I'd agree that it's better to learn how to prepare more of your own meals and eat real food, most of us didn't get there overnight. It sounds as though you currently rely pretty heavily on processed food, frozen meals and fast foods. Here's what I'd suggest:

For a week or two, just try to stay within your calorie goal. That's enough of a shock in the beginning. ;)

Then each week to two weeks add another goal. It could be as simple as preparing two meals a day at home, or adding a serving of fruits or veggies a day, or kicking soda, etc. Try to make one or two healthy changes per week so you don't become overwhelmed and frustrated. Eventually, you'll have a much healthier diet and it should be easier to build new habits one at a time than to try to go to all real food in one step.

Like everyone else said - they are a highly processed food and should be a sometimes food not an often food.

Depends on what your goals are. Theoretically you could eat whatever you want and lose weight if you stay under your calorie limit.

However, most of us have loftier goals like being healthy, feeling good and full and having energy. Hot dogs every day, chicken strips, french friends and even Lean Cuisines won't help accomplish these later goals nearly as well as other "healthier" foods. "Healthy" foods include fresh fruit and vegetables, lean, unprocessed protein, high fiber, low sodium carbs, and low fat dairy products. If you eat "healthy" food you'll feel better, have more energy and feel full on less calories.
