Does green tea actually work for weight loss?

I've recently started drinking green tea as all articles I've read said it is advised epecially to people trying to lose weight. I was wondering if any of you maybe saw any results of consuming green tea in their weight loss?

No, drinking green tea will not help you lose weight. A calorie deficit however, will.10

It is a calorie free drink that might stop you from snacking, but other than that it isn't going to make you lose weight.8

Nope...it's a gimmick.4

If you're really curious about this, you can look for the studies and read up on it yourself. Most of them haven't shown much. There have been some studies that show a very, very slight increase in metabolism (the oft cited 4% from a 1999 study - or about 50-100 extra calories a day). But that's within the margin of error for most people. It's not a noticeable difference.
If you want to drink green tea, go for it. But the weight loss effects have been overhyped by media articles or a misunderstanding of the science involved. A calorie deficit and moving more are still your best bet.6 -

I've been drinking green tea for a while now. I do not believe it ever caused me to lose weight. However, I noticed it helped get me through the afternoon at work with more energy. I do not drink coffee so this is what I drink instead. Green Tea is a nice alternative to other drinks, but not any special potion to lose weight. If you enjoy it, drink it. If not, don't force it upon yourself.6

No, but if you are substituting green tea (or other teas) in place of other drinks with higher calories (soda, juice, etc.) or picking up other snacks it can help create a calorie deficit which is how you will lose weight. I drink a lot of tea for that reason. It helps keep my hands/mouth occupied so I don't pick up a snack instead8

Flavored unsweetened tea really helps me with cravings and doesn't add any calories to my day. So, in the sense that it can help you maintain a calorie deficit, drink it if you like it.3

Thank you all im of course not planning to replace excercise with green tea and I'm definitely gonna try to continue drinking it for the sake of avoiding snacking. Thank you all for your replies2

@lemonsmile00 green tea per some research seems to be a good antioxidant. Anything that cuts body inflammation may help with health in general which could include weight loss. There seems to be little to no downside to drinking green tea for most people yet many potential upside benefits. I understand some think of webmd.com as a quack site but here is one researchers remarks on green tea.

Welcome to MFP forums. MFP forums has become a major source health improvement info over the past few years at my house. A lot of science links get posted or subjects that are worth Googling for info. The actual comments do run the gambit from from awesome to even damaging to the health of some as is typical for social media advice in general.

Wipes out a craving. Better to have green tea than a bag of doritos.4

I drink green tea almost every day. I drank it while I was gaining weight and I drank it while I was losing weight and I drink it now that I am not trying to do either.
It can help with weight loss only if you use it to lower your calorie intake. For example if you drink it instead of a higher calorie drink.2 -
I agree with what everyone is saying. It makes no impact on weight gain or loss (unless you fill it with sweetener), but for me it ruins the taste of anything I may try to snack on at the same time, so, because I really enjoy me tea, I know I won't be eating while I'm drinking it.2

I switched to green tea last year. I don't think it's made a jot of difference to my metabolism or anything like that - but my teeth no longer get stained from drinking black tea so yay!3

The only thing it will do is fill you up with water and possibly make you less hungry from the limited caffeine it has (and it has no calories). So inadvertently could it make you lose weight from eating less? Sure.1

I've been drinking green tea for years and it has done absolutely nothing for me in terms of weight loss! Sorry!1

Green tea will not make you lose weight, but will help you reduce hunger, cravings plus has so many health benefits. It's loaded with antioxidants, regulates sugar level, prevents heart disiases and much more!2

I didn't like the taste of green tea at first, but I've grown used to it. It has a calming effect in my case. I like that it takes away cravings for snacks, and that translates to less calories.Need2Exerc1se wrote: »JanetYellen wrote: »Wipes out a craving. Better to have green tea than a bag of doritos.

I don't want to eat anything along with green tea. I drink it on its own. Works for me!2 -

Green tea won't regulate blood sugar or prevent heart disease. It is 99% water. Leaf water. Nothing special about it. Drink it if you like it, don't drink it if you don't like it - easy.9 -

No it doesn't...if it did doctors would give you tea bags instead of tablets.7 -
I can't stand green tea, it tastes like dishwater. Even if it did help weight loss which it doesn't, I'd pass. Coffee ftw, good old black coffee baby!2

If you're looking for help with cholesterol, then Green tea is a great option. Actual weight loss, not so much.
IFL Science did a great infographic chart of gimmick 'super' health items, which ones are useful and which are BS, and what they actually help with in your body. Great resource if you're not sure if that supplement is right for you.
