Hello, so i was wondering why some people (or most people) here on MFP give some kind of a note if a certain food is high in sodium (like saying this is good but it is high in sodium).
I love everything salty, spicy. and i guess i have to ask if there's any negative effects on diet or health if i keep eating high sodium meals.

Welcome!

Excess sodium can make you retain water, and can be troublesome if you have high blood pressure. It might not be a big deal for you.

but does it have any health effect in the future? -like too much sugar can cause diabetes-

No, too much sugar does not cause diabetes.

And you only need to worry about sodium if you have a medical condition (high bp, kidney disease etc) that requires it.

    Sugar doesn't cause diabetes.

High sodium with low potassium might work you toward a heart attack in the future.

High blood pressure from too much sodium and other life choices can be a slow and silent killer. Especially if you're already genetically predisposed to high blood pressure. I would recommend you get your blood pressure tested (can be done at most walmarts and pharmacies) and go from there.

Wrong. Too much sodium can raise your blood pressure without you even knowing unless you get it checked regularly. There may be no symptoms of high blood pressure so saying don't worry about it when you have no way of knowing (unless you get it checked) until it's too late (stroke/heart attack) is not very good advice.

Sugar doesn't cause diabetes, but people with diabetes have trouble processing sugar and need to monitor their sugar and carb intake. Sodium can cause you to retain water so if you weigh the day after a high sodium meal the scale may be up even though you haven't gained fat. And high sodium is bad if you have high blood pressure. It is easy to monitor your own blood pressure at home. You can buy a digital blood pressure machine at any pharmacy. They aren't too expensive. My husband has had high blood pressure since high school and takes meds for it. We both monitor our blood pressure at home. I don't worry about sodium but I know I do not have high blood pressure. If you don't monitor it regularly you could have high blood pressure and not know it.
