Why would MFP raise my calorie intake limit?

Recently I met my goal to loose thirty pounds. Each time I have met a weight loss milestone I adjust my goal in MFP and MFP has lowered my caloric intake. My settings have stayed at a goal of loosing 1lb a week , lightly active. This milestone when I adjusted my weight and new goal (10 more pounds) MFP raises my caloric intake from 1200 to 1360 calories/day. After all the work I have put in and all that I have learned one would think I might understand caloric adjustments more but I do not understand why MFP raised my daily caloric intake goal. Do you know why?

Sounds like a glitch...I would re-run the goals and see what it says at the bottom of the screen - it should tell you about how much weight per week you'll lose.

For just 10 lbs, shooting for 0.5lb/week might be better also.

I just re-ran the goals and same outcome.?!?

Okay - and what did it say at the bottom of the screen for projected weight loss?

What's your current weight & what's your height, too?

It said 1lb per week. Current is 150lbs, new goal is 140lbs. Height 5'4".

New goal? Changing current weight, goal, height, age, or activity level could change your calorie goal. As long as all the information is correct there's nothing to worry about.

It seems contrary to everything that helped me loose thirty pounds, why increase caloric intake to loose when everything else (age, height, activity level) has stayed the same?

Did you change the amount per week you are trying to lose if you were at 1200 before, it sounds like you may have had it set to lose 2lbs per week. If you selected different like 1 or .5 per week you required less of a deficit. Which could be where the adjustment is coming from.

You made adjustments, you said you changed your current weight and goal weight. Are you positive you didn't change your days of exercise or activity level?

I mentioned my new goal in the original post, that is all I changed. I have double and triple checked this-same activity level, same age, same height and sane goal of 1lb per week. These have been my settings all along for months and months now. It seems weird my caloric intake would be raised.

I didn't think days of exercjse has anything to do with the calorie deficit goal? Activity level would though.

OP I'm not sure why it happened but as others have said, if you only have 10 lbs to lose then a goal of 0.5 lb/week would be appropriate. That should be a 250 cal increase over what you had before, but since MFP bottoms out at 1200 then it's possible that you would only see a jump of 160 cals. You would still lose, just at a slower rate and that's meant to help you ease into maintenance as well as preserve lean muscle mass.

Do you think MFP increased my calories when I changed my goal to help ease me into maintenance? That makes sense to me, maybe that is why the calorie goal increased. Now I am questioning if I have always just adjusted weekly pound goals instead of goal weight.

I don't know. I've been here three years and two of those I was losing and adjusting several variables. The only thing I ever thought it auto adjusted for me was my activity level from lightly active to active based on my step count, but I know other people get to 20k steps a day and are still set at sedentary so I don't know if I changed it myself one night in a drunken stupor and forgot about it? ;)

I actually wish MFP would put tighter controls on that or at least have a prompt that says "with only 10 lbs to lose, 0.5 lb/week would be a good goal for you" because there are lots of people way under eating trying to lose 2 lbs/week with 15 or so lbs to lose because they are in a hurry, have an event or something...

Well no rush for me, I am happy to adjust and go slow. But, I am a little nervous to consume more calories as a baseline all of a sudden!

I don't know why you were given more calories.
If you are satisfied with your current rate of loss you can manually set it to 1200 and keep eating that amount or set it to 1280 and see how that number goes for you.

    Why would it?

Remember that MFP is a program running on a computer. It was written by a person(s), who's not perfect. Sometimes the person has a bad day or they forget one tiny thing about the language they're developing in. Millions of lines of code, maybe one is incorrect.

    Or not.
