There are a ton of them.... GOOGLE fit, Endomondo, Map my Ride, etc. What is your favorite, and why? My primary interests are bicycling and walking/hiking.

Is fit bit stand alone? I was under the impression you had to have a fit bit to use it, but maybe I'm wrong.0

Newer iOS devices can use their phone as a tracker. Only iOS has the option though.

What do you mean by standalone?
A basic Fitbit synced to the app is by far the most useful piece of kit I own ..it is designed to track steps unlike an iOS which offers it as a secondary function.
But if you're a cyclist I imagine mapmyride would be useful for tracking that part

Stand Alone.....not needing an extra piece of gear, just a phone app.0

Something GPS based then cos other than that any step counter is secondary to core function so cannot be as good as specialist devices IMHO0
