Martial Artists?

As much as I enjoy my other workouts, I always consider them as nothing more than training for my kung fu practice. And the nights that I have class are my best burn; I burn between 900 to 1000 calories in an hour of kung fu! It has everything: strength training, cardio, stretching, endurance building, and even some high-intensity interval training (we do "moving targets," where one person moves hand-held targets around and the other tries to hit or kick them as many times as possible in 3 mins. I'm up to @ 560 strikes in that time).

So, is there anyone else on MFP who practices a traditional martial art? (Sorry, I don't count Tae Bo. It's a great workout, but not a martial art.)

I have a black belt in shotokan/kyokushin and have also trained and fought full-contact kickboxing and muay thai (all ammy, 6-0). The great thing about the arts is that for the most part, you don't even realize how hard you're working because there is such a strong mental side to it.

Not that I think it is one of the maritial arts, but I fence. Love it! Cardio, core work, leg work, and lots of mind work. Once a week I particpate in a cardio class at my son's Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school. Lots of burn there, too!

One thing to be mindful of when counting the calorie burn is any down time more than a few minutes. I notice a significant different from when I let my HRM run the whole 2 hours I am AT fencing versus just having it on the 60 minutes I am actually fencing. Be mindful of times you are getting instruction, watching others spar, etc.

I agree with you! When I turned 45, I started taking karate - Tang Soo Do, which is Korean & similar to Tae Kwan Do. My goal is to earn my black belt, which I'm working on. It wasn't until I started training that I even liked any sort of exercise at all. Tang Soo Do gave me the confidence that I can actually do this, and do it well. Now, with karate classes each week and the yoga 3x/week that I signed up for 2 months ago, all the extra cardio workouts (walking, my elliptical, etc) are just additional fillers and not the main event. It prevents my mind from focusing on the fact that "oh darn, I have to go exercise now so I can lose that weight."

    Aikido

I haven't been inside a dojo in over 2 years, but I still practice my TKD and Shorin-Ryu forms. Also work on a heavy bag and a double tie bag. Good workout.

Wow, quite a few! Nice to know I'm not alone! ;-)

I'm intrigued by the wide range of styles practiced, too! I had actually done a form of Karate back in college and liked it, but it didn't really "click" with me the way kung fu did. I think the kung fu philosophy of staying soft and redirecting an opponent's energy just meshes well with my personality. I think that's what makes martial arts so cool, is that there's something for everyone. Even within my class, different students have different talents and strengths: I'm good at deflecting and getting around my opponent to surprise them; another guy's kicks are nearly impossible to get past; one woman is fantastic at throwing people off-balance.

Oh, and ocds ... krav maga? Wow, I never met anyone who did that in real life. To me, that was just something they talked about in the movies! ;-)

My background is in Ju Jitsu but more recently I've studied Historical European Martial Arts that mainly is built around renaissance era combat fencing, but there is a surprising amount of grappling as well. However due to knee issues (trained outdoors on questionable surfaces) I stopped. I'm thinking of taking Krav Maga up in a few months. I agree though, most styles offer a great workout all around.
