Juicing Reboot

Hi there,

I'm doing a juicing reboot to help fix my digestive system. (It's in really rough shape). I'm loving the juice, I just don't understand what I can do to make sure it doesn't take so much time! I'm not getting anything done at all, and it's only the first day!! All I have time to do is prep the fruits and veggies, juice, clean the juicer, drink the juice, clean the dishes and the counter. How do people do this and work and everything? What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance for your help!

What are you doing wrong......juicing instead of eating food.

Apparently drinking your nutrients give your digestive system a much needed break.

Your digestion doesn't need a break....if your digestion stopped you would be in serious medical danger....

A break from digesting food? That's what the digestive system IS for. Do you give your heart a break from beating? Your lungs a break from breathing? Your brain a break from thinking?

That's a lie designed to sell juicers and books and magazines

I am not a juicer and am therefore not well versed on the process, but is prepping the fruits and veggies ahead of time as a batch an option? Are you able to substitute smoothies at all? That would cut down on the process a bit and give you some additional fiber.

Have you talked to your doctor about this plan? By "really rough shape" I assume you have a chronic issue like crohns or colitis or ibs or such. You should really run this past your doc first to be sure your plan doesn't interfere with your treatment. Most chronic conditions will not be treated by temporary juicing. They need lifelong care.

OP, if your digestive system is "in really rough shape", have you gone to a doctor? If not, you really should to ensure there is not something wrong that requires actual medical attention.

I don't believe there is any truth to the idea that your digestive system needs a break. I would also hesitate to drink just fruit juice for more than a day or two, as your body needs protein, fat, and plenty of calories to do all the other things it does all day. Unfortunately, juicing is by its nature pretty labor intensive. As @kgeyser said, batch prepping and bagging your produce might help.

If you've been to a doctor and they say nothing is wrong or there's nothing they can do, if you are more specific about the problems you are having, there are lots of regulars with all kinds of digestive conditions here that i'm sure could give you some suggestions.

No, they're forbidden for the 5 days. I do LOVE smoothies though, and they're so quick! Thank you for the suggestion!

How long are you planning on doing this? I'd suggest reading the response from @HorrorGeekLiz. Common sense info there, but only if you have a legitimate digestive issue. I do and have to do liquids / soft foods only for 24 - 48 hours at a time occasionally. Longer than that is generally not a good idea.

HardyGirl - what you're seeing here in responses is pretty par for the course on MFP. If you dare suggest trying anything other than Calories In, Calories Out, people insist you must be wrong to try it.

Now, technically what they are saying is true - your digestive system does not need a break. Your liver doesn't need a break. Your kidneys don't need a break. Could you imagine anyone saying your heart needs a break from pumping blood? No. Your other organs don't need a vacation either.

So, with that information in mind, there is nothing wrong with juicing if you're enjoying it. I recently did a juice fast and loved every minute of it. It really helped me break a sugary junk food bender I had been on. I did it the lazy way, though, and bought the juice from a local juicing store, so I can't help you on how to be efficient in that area. It was really expensive though, so I could only afford to do it for a few days. I needed that mental break to get me out of the junk food cycle and back into a good, healthy diet. It worked.

If you're not enjoying the juicing process, don't continue. It's not a magical solution to anything. It's just another eating option.

That's fair enough...and is appropriate if you wish to do it

But digestive issues are not solved by juicing, that requires a doctor visit

Wow thank you!! I have been to many different types of doctors. This digestive issue has been going on for about 4 1/2 years now, and nobody can figure out what's wrong with me. Along with my other symptoms, my family doctor said since she can't figure out what it can be with all my test results coming back fine, she assumes it's Chronic Fatigue and Irritable Bowel that I have. (I have other health issues aside from digestion). She gave me a prescription for chronic fatigue that made me worse, and I've been on my own since, going to all different kinds of doctors. I'm finally no longer sick after 9 months of not being able to sit up or anything after going back to my homeopath... I had read a wrestler talking about her juice cleanses and where she found out about it. It's a man named Joe Cross who did the movies 'Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead 1&2". I've just been trying almost anything to make myself better and healthy for once.

Maybe you should start a new thread with IBS in the title asking for suggestions from others who have it? I'm sorry to hear what you are going through, and I hope you can find ways to work with it! I know there are several frequent posters who deal with IBS and Crohns who may be able to suggest some strategies to try. Best of luck!

Thank you so much! I will try that. Does that mean I should stop the reboot? I just spent so much money on produce. lol Thank you so much for being wonderful and kind. :)

@BZAH10 posted above that she sometimes does liquids/soft foods for one or two days, and @HorrorGeekLiz said she's done one for a few days. I don't think one or two days would hurt if you want to try it. I have no idea if it will help either. I personally wouldn't do it for much longer than that (but I'm a wimp!). You could also juice some of it and roast the rest (that will make them nice and soft). And in the meantime, hopefully you'll get lots of other ideas to try :drinker:

She stated she has tried several doctors. Now, I'm not defending what she's doing as right, but as someone who has gone through this, doctors have a hard time pinpointing digestive issues since they can be vague and made worse by other issues (stress, other illnesses and medications, etc.).

I won't retell my story here of all the doctors and GI specialists I went to over the years because it's too long. I've just learned to manage it myself by elimination diets, managing stress, working out regularly, and resorting to liquids and soft foods occasionally. Not calling you out personally, @FunkyTobias. Just responding to your response since it's generally perceived that medical doctors are the answer. Sometimes they are not.

Medical doctors may not have all the answers, but homeopaths have none.

I think there may be something to juicing to be honest.
I fell for the Fat Sick and Nearly Dead documentary years ago as a way to lose weight. Bought a juicer, juiced for a few days, and packed it away for years. I got it back out a few months ago somewhat shortly after switching to a plant based diet.
I don't do juice "cleanses" but I do incorporate fresh vegetable juice (veggies grown by my hands) into my diet daily and I've seen some changes. Most notably, in my running. I recover faster when I incorporate juicing. It has helped me as I increased my training intensity for an upcoming race.
For a person with digestive issues, one of juicing's biggest benefits is that it takes out the fiber. I've never cared enough to go to a doctor for digestive issues because I know my symptoms fall in line with IBS. Fiber is absolutely necessary but too much and my guts are not happy. Juicing allows me to obtain the micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals) from veggies that my body needs to cope with a rigorous training schedule without ending up doubling my daily fiber needs.
It's about balance. I've found a way of eating that keeps my intestines happy and allows me to train like I want to. I've done the leg work though and it took a lot to get here.

All that being said. I juice on Sunday and make enough for about 4 days. It's canning season. Go to a store and buy a case of pint size ball jars. Fill the jars and put them in your refrigerator. I prefer using jars because they're convenient and more air tight than plastic.

Thank you so much! I was juicing just in the morning every day, and that felt good. Didn't get rid of my belly bloat or pains, but I felt like I had a bit more energy. I love your suggestions, thank you very much!

Well yeah I give my brain a break from thinking when I'm on vacation! ;)
