Keto works if you follow it closely and do it right. Anyone else have luck with it?

Congrats! I did keto last year, and lost weight but couldn't keep the low carb intake... a lot of people can though, wish you a lot of luck! Good job!4
-
I had a lot of luck with it the first few months! Then I fell off a bit and now I'm back on and remembering why I was doing it in the first place1
-
All of my 114 pounds were dropped via some form of low-carb, but then, I've always eaten that way for the most part. I've never been a fan of sugar, starch, grains, etc., even when I was a kid. Didn't go full on keto until about three months ago though, and have continued to progress.
Feels good to come home and eat all of the dead animals, and not have to worry about wasting space on filler.10 -
Keto works.
From Time Magazine quote :
"Research is mounting that saturated fat is better for you than processed carbohydrates like sugar and white bread"

Any way of achieving a calorie deficit works if you do it right.10

starting today and I am excited to see if I can do it. Carbs and sugars have always been a struggle for me. Wish me luck!1

I've been on Keto /LCHF for the past 6 months and lost 5kg (11lbs) (now 52.5kg(115lbs) for 1.63m (5.3)) it's definitely working for me (and I've tried all the diets!) because I can eat lots of cakes, cookies and other sweet things so I don't feel frustrated at all, the only thing is I need to bake them myself, same goes for pizza or sandwiches. Plus all the good fats keep me satiated longer. And plus again, all of my digestive troubles linked to sugars have gone away. There are million of recipes to pick from so you're pretty much never eating the same meals. so when people ask me how long I'm going to be on this diet, for the 1st time I genuinely answer "forever" I really don't plan on stopping this. Not saying I will never eat pasta or my good old French baguette when back home, but if that happens I will truely enjoy it!1

19 is great, but I bet most of that is water weight. That's what happens with low carb diets initially.13

I started the first few days on lchp but now have switched over to Keto and so far 5 pounds in 5 days papas bag what is your calorie intake1

Well done on losing 12lbs of water weight!6

Great early mental boost ...hop to see you with 2 years of maintenance at goal weight behind you0

OP, I suggest you check out the main low carber daily forum group here in MFP. It's where most of us Ketofiles tend to hang out:

As to your question, yes, I've had excellent results from it. I follow LCHF due to medical/health reasons (I don't have a choice) and have successfully eliminated 165 pounds. I am currently in maintenance (finally - yay)!4 -
Ditto. Join the Low Carber Daily group. They are a great, supportive bunch... and don't think people lose 12-19 lbs of water in three weeks. LOL Maybe 5 lbs was water, but carbs make you retain water, so who cares, right?
I've lost over 30lbs on keto too. For some of us, keto makes weightloss a lot more doable.4 -
I gained 11lbs of water after a re-feed day following 11 days with minimal carbs so yes the initial drop is likely to water.1
-
1 refeed day brought back 11 lbs water weight ..was that weighing 24 hours apart? @trigden1991
Have to say that supports everything I've ever read about water weight with carb depletion in terms of the average levels of water weight but I did think it took slightly longer to replenish glycogen and water in muscles and liver
Interesting0 -
A lot of the initial weight loss is water, no lie. Doesn't negate the fact that LCHF makes it pretty easy for me to maintain a deficit and gives me more energy to be active, so I keep losing and it can't all be water.
As for the 11 lb water gain on refeed, not surprised. When I overcarb I retain water like crazy, and also my weight will fluctuate 5-10 pounds daily depending on water intake and (ahem) excretory functions. That might differ from person to person, I don't know, but I'm predisposed to hold water, it seems, even on diuretics.0 -

24hrs apart, weighing dehydrated in the morning. I too was suprised as normally it ranges between 4-7lbs. My last meal was quite late as well so could explain the extra food weight.0 -
I'm not even on keto and drop 8-10 nightly of water weight.
Either way, 19lbs in 3 weeks better be mostly water, otherwise, it's too much in 3 weeks and shouldn't be praised anyway.7 -

Better hope it was much more than 5lbs of water or that's an unhealthy rate of loss unless OP started out at c. 450lbs.1 -
You've got a point. 19lbs is a lot to lose in 3 weeks. Say he lost 5 lbs of water, that would leave 14lbs to lose in three weeks, or about 4.5 lbs per week.... It is a lot but I I don't think it is completely unrealistic.
In my n=1 I lost 30lbs in about 3 months, or 2-3 lbs per week, and that put me into a normal BMI. If the OP is heavier than me, than it could happen. @papas_new_bag How are your losses now?

I have so far (in 4 weeks) only dropped 2kg of water weight on keto. But I generally don't hold much water anyway. From past experience.0

Definitely no 14 pounds of fat in 3 weeks.1 -
I've been living a LCHF lifestyle (goal of keeping net carbs at 20-25 daily) since June 5 and I've never felt better. I hate scales, because I don't believe they paint an accurate picture, but I have lost weight. I've gone down a dress size, and lost weight in areas of my body that absolutely would not budge on any other diet. I've also decreased my cravings for crap/junk food thanks to lchf eating, and I am no longer constantly hungry. In fact, I often have no appetite at all, and it's amazing! I plan to do this for life. I am sold. Wheat and sugar are empty calories, and by not eating them, I have lost pounds and inches, my skin has cleared up in amazing ways, and I have more energy. I am sold! Love the lchf life!5

Ketoacidosis is what happens when ketosis goes too far. Ketones build up in your blood, and it becomes acidic. Ketoacidosis can cause a coma or death.
It's not clear what kind of possible long-term health risks a low-carb diet may pose because most research studies have lasted less than a year. Some health experts believe that if you eat large amounts of fat and protein from animal sources your risk of heart disease or certain cancers may actually increase.
But most studies have found that at 12 or 24 months, the benefits of a low-carb diet are not very large. A 2014 review found that higher protein, low-carbohydrate diets may offer a slight advantage in terms of weight loss and loss of fat mass compared to a normal protein diet. At a year, the difference was only about a pound (about 0.4 kilograms), though, and those who had the greatest benefits stuck to the diet long term.1 -

Nope! Ketoacidosis is not related to low carb diets. Ketoacidosis is effect of type 1 diabetes, starvation and alcoholism. Can also be triggered by dehydration, heart attacks, etc. But low carb diets do not cause KA.6 -

19pounds of water? I'm betting more like 5-7 of water given that it's been three weeks.0 -

1 gram carb = 4 grams water. So yeah, lots of water weight loss initially.0 -
As already mentioned ketoacidosis is not related to proper low carb eating. Ketoacidosis is a complication seen in type one diabetics, type two diabetics who are insulin dependent, alcoholics, and people who are literally starving. If you are healthy, not on insulin, not an alcoholic, and eating sufficient calories, it's not a concern. CVD is more closely related to inflammation rather than dietary fat or cholesterol intake, and chronically high blood glucose causes inflammation, so if anything, low carb should be protective against CVD. Eating fat from animals is also less inflammatory than most seed and vegetable oils, as those are too high in omega 6 and usually lacking in omega 3, whereas the predominant fats in animal products are monounsaturated fats and saturated fats with are good for you, or at the very least benign. "Some health experts" are married to outdated ideas about animal products, saturated fat, and cholesterol.
Yes, long term, all diets have pretty crappy success rates. People often lose the weight, then go back to their old habits and regain. So it is important to find what works for you that you can stick with for life, and recognize that losing weight is actually the easy part; maintenance requires vigilance. For some the best way may very well be a low carb, high fat diet. I've been eating that way for over three years and have maintained my loss.1 -
I LOVE KETO!! So many benefits!!
