so i read lack sleep causes Hypermetabolism

which causes huge calorie burn while resting iam amazed no one ever started the no sleep diet.
my question is those of you with sleep problems do you feel you burn more calories when you have bouts of insommia?

    I would only assume its possible if you continue to be more active. But many people who don't get a lot of sleep tend to have greater amounts of stress which tends to cause more hormonal issues. But weight loss isn't about burn as many calories as possible but finding a balance of calories in vs out.

    My husband is a true insomniac and has gotten a bit thicker since it has gotten worse. I find that when I do not sleep I tend to eat more because I notice the slight hunger that I would normally sleep through. Also, when I am having a hard time sleeping I tend ti do things that are calming..so I try to rest, listen to music etc...not move around more.

    I eat more. So much more. Lack of sleep has been linked to obesity. The basic instinctual needs sleeping and eating tend to over compensate when the other one is lacking.

    Nope. lack of sleep is associated with a whole host of problems including weight gain. Ask any parent or person suffering from sleep apnea

    not sure where you read that, but it is backwards - lack of sleep is associated with a slowed metabolism, weight gain, and a higher risk of Metabolic syndrome.

    In small amounts, yes. But going on for whole DAYS (8-11 days) without sleep does cause hypermetabolism. Not saying that you should do that though, as it goes to the point where you will die from weight loss. That, and your immune system goes to *kitten* (excuse my language, but that's as far as I can go in descriptions, and that's still an understatement.

    I have chronically bad sleeping habits, and I can assure you that it does -not- help with weight loss.

    I have insomnia sometimes, and I usually have to eat a high carb snack like a bowl of cereal to be able to go back to sleep. So any boost in my metabolism is off set by my middle of the night snack and the general tiredness/stress the next day can lead to poor food choices.

    Struth and crikey I'm not going to even look up to see if this is "possible", I couldn't agree more with others. As a chronic insomniac it is a *kitten* for the day after munchies, lethargy and general pissed offedness. Certainly anyone who tries to exercise will find their endurance and performance going down.

    The longest stretches for me have been around 5 full days/nights...by then I'm almost 'manic' with exhaustion.

    I can't make sense of the world, everything is loud, overwhelming and my moods are shot. I have used meds. to get past this tipping point, in fact by this point I would welcome a sledge hammer.

    Insomnia is a curse and without sleep Yeah there's the insanity and death thing to worry about; way before you have any joy from your 'hyped' up your metabolism.

    I have had insomnia since before I was a teen. Not sure it ever effected me when younger with weight loss or gain. Now though, I lose weight better when I get decent sleep. Like, solid sleep for me since 6 hours is about the max.

    I've had insomnia since I was a kid, and I barely get a decent sleep (or any sleep) much of the time. Still managed to get fat and struggled to lose the weight. Plus, when you have a poor sleeping pattern, there's a lot of boredom in lying awake, and eating is an easy fix for boredom.

    If surviving on a crappy amount of sleep burned calories, I'm pretty sure I'd be dead.
