I REALLY need texting buddies to keep me motivated

I get migraine headaches almost everyday. Sometimes they are not bad, and I can exercise with no problem. But then a bad migraine will hit and I can't go on the treadmill for 2, 3, 4 days. After that long, it's hard to get that motivation back to start exercising again.
I really need a person or people to text me and really be motivating, but harsh. Basically be stern with me to tell me to get back on that treadmill once the migraine is over. It's really hard to me to start over after I've stopped for a few days. So I really, REALLY need help with this.

I could message you through the app to help out. I get migraines as well and I know how dibilitating they can be. I understand what you are going through.2

I've added you!
I can send stern messages if it helps you reach your goal!0 -

gc- You obviously have never had a migraine. The worst you've probably had is an itty bitty headache. Imagine someone hitting you in the head non-stop with a hammer. Add uncontrolled vomiting to that also. DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD GET ON A TREADMILL IF THAT WAS HAPPENING TOO YOU????? Obviously not. If you still don't understand, I would be happy to give you a demonstration.
So Yes, in times like that I do need extra encouragement. It's easy to let the pain take over and a rational voice helps put things into perspective. That's all I'm asking for. But thanks for being an *kitten*.1 -
If you want perspective then man up. My friends have lost arms and legs and doing all sorts of crazy exercises around the world- they don't require someone to text them for motivation.5

Yes....that's pretty harsh....but true....I suffer from migraine head aches too....but if you really have your heart set to losing weight and getting healthy.....just wait till the HA subsides....take a hot bath if that helps...sip on some hot tea...and get to stepping!!
Add me if you'd like....I'm a good motivator!

I broke my back some years ago, and the doctors and PT's where working under the assumption that I would never walk again. I did grueling physical therapy 7 hours a day. You don't have to tell me what others go through and how they make it. I made it. I saw how bad it was for them. I've been through more than you'll ever know. And by the way, this ISN'T a P__sing contest who has it the worst. We ALL have horror stories. So If I, or someone else in here asks for just a little motivation, who the hell are you to talk down to them and tell them to f--- off? You have some anger issues my friend.4

Just man up and stop whinging lol.2

Have you tried being active with your statuses? When I'm not super busy I go over them and add an encouraging word where I can. For me it has meant alot that there could be people that can draw inspiration from my efforts (I keep my diary open).
On EXTREMELY rare occasions I get a migrane (my wife more often), so bad it affects my eyesight.
Add me, if you feel you really need it we can exchange numbers so you can check in with me.0 -

I think they are being harsh like you asked them to be to try to motivate you? Also it's a bad idea to give out or get numbers through this site. I would stick to messaging through the app.... you never know when a profile is fake.

hey, I suffer from Migraines too, I know how horrible they are. Thank God I haven't had one in a while but when I feel one is coming I don't exercise, it just makes it worse. You can add me if you want, Im just at the beginning of my journey but we can all use come motivation. I love cooking healthy now too0

Grow up and stop looking for people to hold your hand just to get you on a treadmill. either you want to exercise and eat correctly and lose weight or don't.YvetteK2015 wrote: »gc- You obviously have never had a migraine. Okay, so here is where I get lost (because I have had migraine headaches and I am thankful that they are not frequent). You are coming here basically asking for people to text you to motivate you and when someone tells you to grow up and take responsibility for your own life, you call them a *kitten* and say they don't understand that you are physically unable to get on a treadmill.
How exactly are you expecting a text message to get you on a treadmill if you are physically unable to? If this is a limitation you have, then you need to learn to work around it because even if you do get people to text you, you're still not going to get on that treadmill. And then you're going to blame them.
Eat at a deficit. Add exercise when you are physically able to. Take responsibility for your own life.

I didn't realize that reaching out for a little support was considered whining.
So anyway, yup. Got it.0 -

The thing about reaching out for support is you need to have a clear idea of what you need. From your post, it's really not clear if you need some encouragement (and it looks like you have some offers) or if you expect people to be accountable for you (which is how your post reads). I, along with other posters are asking how you expect this messaging to be helpful, especially since you have expressed some very clear and real physical limitations you have which text messaging cannot fix.
At least from where I come from, this is not a personal attack. It's some tough love and an opportunity for reflection from other people who have had to overcome obstacles to get to their goals. I'm sorry if it reads otherwise.2 -

Just ignore him. You'll find a lot of brats like that who don't understand we are not all built the same way.0 -
The good news is you can lose weight with no exercise at all. And I don't know you, but I bet you probably don't feel like eating while you're suffering a migraine. Exercise is really good for you in a lot of different ways, but it isn't necessary for weight loss.
Now with that said, can you find a different form of exercise? If it's the steps that hurt, maybe a bike or an elliptical would work better, or walking outside on dirt or grass. Resistance bands work inside. Etc.1 -
PunkRockGoth, the last thing Im looking for is anyone taking responsibility for me. Just as a back ground, I broke my back and was told i would be paralyzed. i always told myself that wasn't going to happen and and I fought like hell, and he I am walking. When I got cancer, I was told I might die. I never believed it, and again I fought like like hell and here i am alive. This right here should be a cake walk, I know. but for some reason, I am having a struggle. This is MY journey, no one else. I don't see how asking for someone to message me and say, Hey, have you made it today? If you haven't really try to do it".
Everyone has struggles in life, and i don't believe for one minute that people aren't helped, even those in this forum, when gives get a little encouragement.1 -
Needing the same Yvette. Let me know if you still doing this. Thx0

I'm so sorry you get migraines. They are sooo debilitating. I used to get them so often - the can't open your eyes kind. I really have not gotten many in the past two years. I am not sure if it's just that my sleep is so much better now, or that I made so many changes in what I eat - cutting sugar, etc., or what, but I will say that diet and exercise seemed to help eliminate my migraines. I feel like this sounds cliche or like I'm trying to pitch some magic potion and I most definitely am not.
Just that if you do stay on track and look at your nutrition and it actually does help reduce migraines, it will probably be motivating to keep on it. General diet changes, keeping up regular exercise, and making time for quality SLEEP, seemed to help significantly reduce my migraines. But I know many factors contribute, many out of our control.
Regardless, it's always hard to get back into it after being away for a few days. Especially if you are dealing with any kind of that lovely "migraine hangover" feeling. You almost just have to do it without thinking about it - the bandaid approach - just jump back in quick like pulling off a bandaid. Also, on your first day back, you can tell yourself you don't have to kill your workout - just get yourself there and get your body moving. Because once you're there, you're there. And maybe it's enough just to get your body moving that first day back. But sometimes that is just the hardest part, getting there. Once you're there, it's almost like, okay I'm here, I might as well do something productive.0 -
@leaninsc I'm actually in the middle of one of those migraines right now. I'm on a steroid to break it up. It was the change in barometric pressure that did it for me this time. This is my third day just laying in bed because I can't lift my head.
I want to get on the treadmill tomorrow, but I don't think I want to push it, so I'm thinking I might just do some resistance bands IF my head allows me to stand up for more than 5 minutes. The last thing I want to do is prolong this headache by any real exertion.
I won't even bother to list all the triggers for my migraines. I've had them for 30 years, since I was a child. Plus I see a headache specialist at one of the best headache centers in the country. I wish it was just sleep and food. But everyone on my mother's side of the family is plagued with these. And the one thing I could never have accounted for was the chemo I received when I got cancer. It was after my chemo that my migraines became daily. You have to figure that is poison being pumped into you, so I'm just convinced that it wreaked havoc on my body and made my migraines....I don't even know the right word to use for it. Uncontrollable maybe? Anyway, I try to do the best that I can, and do what I can when the headaches aren't too high on the pain scale. Most of the time it's ok. Most weeks I actually can get on the treadmill 4-5 days a week. I would like to be on 7 days a week, because I'm actually LESS hungry when I go on the treadmill, and that is JUST FINE with me So that is my goal, I know it's not realistic. 5-6 days might be more realistic. So that is what I will strive for.0 -

I would have to agree with the above, in the sense that texting as a constant reminder is equivalent to holding your hand. There's a difference between finding supportive friends versus someone to monitor your every move. The first you hold yourself accountable while the second, your success is dependent on someone else. Instead, have a clear cut goal and seek advice on how to create a plan to achieve success which may or may not involve a supportive group that will "inspire" you to not give up.0 -
I gotcha @YvetteK2015. Believe me, I know what a migraine feels like and I know there are all kinds of triggers without simple solutions.
It sounds like on the days you feel okay, maybe step up the intensity and take advantage of the days you can do it. Do you do HIIT at all? You're supposed to get that EPOC calorie burn post workout if you get your heart rate elevated with sprints and recoveries, and more effective that just straight cardio 7 days a week. So kind of maximize what you can.
Think of how you feel right now and how frustrated that you can't go do your workout. Maybe that can be the motivation you need for the days you don't feel like going. You don't know when the next episode will strike, so when you CAN go, look for the good and look at it as an opportunity to move your body, feel good, and take advantage of the day.
I know it's hard when you're still feeling yucky after a migraine. Is it hard to get motivated, but then you typically feel better if you got yourself there?
Hope this one goes away soon! Does tiger balm ever help you? I used to rub that on my temples and I wouldn't say it made my headache go away, but it did feel good. (Sorry, I really do know how annoying it is to hear every suggestion and did you try ?.... after 30 years of you dealing with this, but I love that stuff.)
Also, I do think in general it helps to have someone to be accountable to. I have a trainer and it helps me so much. Yes it is my responsibility, but knowing someone is going to get on me if I miss a meal or skip my workout keeps me on track and I have that fear of letting another person down.0 -
My daughter is currently dealing with debilitating migraines that are occurring daily. In her case, the doctors suspect a cause...in that respect, she is fortunate. She's had them off and on for 25 years but the recent ones have been the worst she's experienced. She has an excellent doctor who understands her individual situation and is treating her accordingly.
You mentioned your family has a history of migraines. You also mentioned a spinal cord injury. That combination may be what's making them so frequent and long lasting. (My late husband was a paraplegic so I do understand spinal injuries.)
I would suggest listening to your body and taking care of yourself...especially if physical activity exacerbates migraines. Even getting on your treadmill once a week is progress. Just do your best to take care of yourself by eating healthy and get on that treadmill when you know it won't make things worse. Sometimes we are our own worse enemies when we mentally beat ourselves up over not exercising as much as we think we should.
I get most of my exercise cleaning houses. I try to make it a decent workout by being quick but thorough. There are days when I'm not at my peak and it takes longer to clean a house but I don't let that bother me. Do I need to do regular "exercise" like weight lifting, etc., probably but I don't stress if I don't do weight lifting or formal exercises. I accept the fact that it will take me longer to reach my goals. I'm okay with that. I feel that life is too short to stress about whether or not I do x-minutes of formal exercise in a day/week. BTW, I will be 65 in a couple of months. I know I'll never have the figure I had at 21 before I had my children. I'm just looking to being healthy as I get older.0 -
@tomorrow I'm not asking anyone to monitor me. I am the only one accountable for my success. I'm not really sure how someone texting me (not when I'm completely debilitated by a bone crushing migraine) to say "Hey, you can do it today" when I just might be on the fence because of minor pain isn't seen as a motivator, but rather me expecting them to hold my hand through the journey.
I see hundreds of people in the motivation and support threads asking for buddies and what not to check in on them daily, and I see none of the backlash I'm getting here. I guess it's the texting part. If I just said "Add me, I like daily check in's" this thread wouldn't have been what it is.
I'm not debating this anymore. People are reading into my OP something that was never intended, and from there created some narrative about me, and what will happen if I don't succeed. None of which is true, or ever intended.
I've been over this thread for a while now, and I'm not even sure how anyone found it lol. It must have been past page 20 or 30. I tried to clarify in THIS post what I WAS looking for at the time, but it just really isn't something I need now. I think this is going to die a slow death0 -

Yes, correct about the texting part. When people add each other, they are both making the effort to at least meet in the middle by logging in but what your post imply is a one way street only where the other person would have to make all the effort to convince you to workout. So, maybe that's not the picture you were trying to paint but that's how it appears. If you at least make the effort to reach out during difficult times then I'm sure it would have been viewed differently. Perhaps this is just a case of miscommunication and it's nothing personal on my end. I do wish you the best in your journey.0
