Found this interesting. I don't eat any of it anymore... but it just goes to show you that there are way more calories in the food we eat than we may think.

One of each, please.9

I mean if you order something called a "quadruple bypass burger" I assume you know what you're getting yourself into.
(I think I may have clogged an artery just typing that)8 -
As a brit I object to that picture of reformed goo and frozen chips being called fish and chips....7

Which is why calorie consumption is the main reason people gain/lose/maintain weight. Exercise helps to offset some of those calories, but the average person can't out exercise just one of these foods in an hour.

I used to love Del Taco's taco salads...so sad they closed down in my area .1
-
I'll take the peanut butter shake!1
-
I don't think that is a picture of a meatball sub?3
-
The point of this...? Fast food is bad for us. We know this. Sitting down to eat a 32 oz shake is a bit excessive. I couldn't finish it, myself (not that I've tried but in the past the shakes I got were small 12 oz ones not the huge ones that are nearly 3X the size) The large fries are usually something I split with someone too, not try to eat by myself.
And CrabNebula is right... that's not a meatball sub.0 -
I expect my meals to be less then 1000 calories a sitting...0

None of those calorie counts are particularly shocking to me.

I still eat fast food I just work it into my calorie count.2

Me too but those aren't meals. Those are pieces of meals which is even worse, but it's also like the worst thing off each menu. A Burger King Quadruple Stacker? Of course it's a sandwich/burger over 1000 calories. It's not 1 burger. It's 4 burgers. The Outback Fries up there... I'm pretty sure that those are on their appetizer menu (if a recent ad I saw is to be believed.) You can eat an appetizer by itself as your meal but most people split them with other people at the table (at least that's how my family works apps).
I also eat at most of those places. You can find meals for under 1000 calories (whole meals not just pieces of meals) and if you plan your day correctly, you can even eat them.1 -
I eat fast food once a week and get food that is closer to 500 calories which is what I normally eat for that meal. You can get lower calorie food if you choose.
The lesson is check nutritional info and have a sense of what calories are in foods. If something is fried, has a pound of meat, cheese, bread, gravy, a pile of fries bigger than a cat, basically a pint of ice cream with peanut butter the calories are going to be up there. Don't act shocked that it adds up to 1,000+ calories.
You can be shocked about salads. Fast food salads can be sneaky.3 -

I don't find any of that surprising. But I eat a meal >1000 calories almost every day.2

How many meals a day to you eat? I'm betting 2 or a large one and alittle small ones.0 -

On the weekends I'll sometimes eat two meals. Then one of them will be over 1000 or at least in that ballpark. That's just math. We also went to a trampoline park one day, so we needed to eat back a lot of calories after trampolining for 2 hours. It was fun but quite a workout.0

In fairness... at one restaurant I went to, when the appetizer was more than 1000 calories, they expected 4-6 people to split the thing. Looking at the Aussie cheese fries... that's more like 8-12 people enjoying them.
I think some of these grossly huge things - like the Heart Attack Grill's Quaruple Bypass Burger - are meant to be shockingly huge. It's like they're thumbing their noses at all the people who say fast food is unhealthy. It's like they're saying, "You wanna see unhealthy? This is unhealthy!"
Also... Dairy Queen's Chicken Strip Basket is on their twice and the one with more strips has LESS calories. (1340 cal for the 4 piece, 1270 cal for the 6 piece). How does that even work?0 -

Usually 2, one small, one large.0 -
I also wonder how many of them are still on menus. I know you can't get the Quad Stacker at most BKs anymore. They only do Double Stackers (a more reasonable 420 calories).0

This is surprising and eye opening? Ok.
I didn't get fat eating those foods, btw. I got fat from an extra scoop of pasta here and a few extra cookies there, day-in and day-out. For years. What is surprising and dismaying to me is serving sizes of regular everyday foods like cheese and peanut butter. That is enraging6 -
When I go out to eat with my husband to one particular restaurant, I always get the same meal (because I don't really like anything else on the menu), and it's a 1200 calorie salad. I just plan for it and adjust my calories. I've made many 1000+ calorie homemade meals as well.0

No... this was not suppose to be surprising other then companies are making smaller meals with more calories. If I ate a hamburger and milkshake I would of expected it to be less then 1000 kcal. Now it can be over 2000.0

The fun part is, just wrapping any of those burgers in lettuce instead of bread will shave off an absurd amount of calories. A really fun example, that I often eat:
Jimmy John's Gargantuan on French Bread: 1063 kcals.
Jimmy John's Gargantuan Unwich (lettuce wrap): 744 kcals.
That's with absolutely nothing about that hunk of salami, mayo, cheese, and oils changed, except what's containing it.0 -

The examples here are of the largest size milkshake which are HUGE and the huge burgers.
You can get a small milkshake (500 calories) and a number of burgers, including a bacon double cheeseburger, for under 1000 calories.
Eta - at BK for this example.

At my hairdresser's, she always has those "Eat This Not That' books to peruse. While many of them have some shockingly high food items and a fairly reasonable substitute, one of my pet peeves is when they display something like the total calorie count for an item that is likely meant to be shared (like a plate of Cheese Fries or Bloomin Onion at Outback) compared to an item which is clearly an individual serving.
Eat This! Coconut Shrimp (640 cals)
Not That! Aussie Cheese Fries (2,140 cals) - although the Outback website now says 1,100 cals for the cheese fries, probably reduced the size because of the shock value of these type of infographics...
Now it is likely that even if you split the cheese fries 4 ways, you are still getting a salad and an entree too, so the total meal may end up still being high... But it doesn't seem like a fair comparison to put something that four people could easily share against something that if two people split it, they would be grouchy and hungry.

If I ate a hamburger and milkshake that I made, sure. But restaurants, fast food or otherwise, are notorious for having a lot of calories in their foods. There is no expectation of anything except expecting a lot of calories.1 -
The 5 Guys meal is totally worth it - the rest, not so much.1

The BF and I went to Arby's for lunch one day last week. I researched calories, got a 3 piece Chicken Strips (about 400 calories) and a Diet Coke. Filled me up...He on the otherhand got a Small Curly Fry and a Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich...1060 calories. Now, he can eat more (he's 6'3 and 190), but still. You wouldn't think a sandwich and fries would be that much. Knowledge is power...and so is nutritional info on websites.0
