After putting weight on through medications and lack of exercise I am now cleared to exercise and lose weight. The health issues are lost half my eyesight and managing pain.

However I went to my GP yesterday who advised me be eating 600 cals a day only, when I explained I am training 5 times a week including strength training I am a bit lost to how I am suppost to achieve both.

Looking online I should be eating around 1200? And I am just not sure

Any advise given would be great

Get a second opinion. We don't know the details why he would have recommended such a small intake, but short of being only months away from an obesity-related death, I'm not sure why. A second, medical, opinion would be a good starting place.

600 calories seems unrealistically low but i am not a doctor and don't know what happened to you.
Under normal circumstance you could aim at 2000 calories and still loose weight!

Go back to the doctor and ask them what you can eat for 600 calories a day and for how long they intend for you to be on such a low intake. It sounds like there must be more to this advice as it flies in the face of common sense to eat so low on a daily basis. I eat 500 cals twice a week as part of the 5:2 fast diet, but on the other five days I'm eating around 1700 cals.

I would agree with this, as normally I would think if the Dr. really intended for you to eat such a small amount, he would also give you some guidance or refer you to a dietician. Did he give you a specific reason why he thinks you need such a small amount? Sounds like maybe you need to ask some more questions, or get a 2nd opinion, or, if not, ask for a referral to a RD for proper guidance.
    Good luck!

Are your current medical issues (pain and particularly loss of eyesight) type 2 diabetes caused by any chance? Because that could explain why your GP recommended a very low calorie diet.

Maybe your GP meant 600 less per day.

Ah I see. Just as if it had been diabetes caused your GP may have advised a VLCD as a last and urgent resort to get you to lose weight as fast as possible. As research shows losing just 10% of your bodyweight can result in significant loss of fat around the liver which in turn often significantly improves type 2 diabetes and diabetes related illnesses.

If this sin't the case the poster above may be correct did you misunderstand them and think they meant eat 600 a day when really they meant eat 600 less than you currently are?

Either way I recommend getting clarification. And in future if you don't understand something, ask them during the appointment, rather than being confused and having to go to the internet afterwards. It delays treatment. It's their job to explain treatment to you so you understand. If your doctor won't do this they're a crap doctor and you should find a new one. You're also entitled to a second opinion if you want one.
