STILL EATING SWEETS

Hello Everybody!
I have been calorie counting for 3 weeks now and I'm down 7.5 lbs. Yay! I seem to not do too well with sticking to new things when I dive in head-first. So I've still been eating some processed junk and sweets, just not as much. I try to get more fresh fruit and vegetables and really focus on staying right around my calorie goal. Anyone else have luck with eating some of the same crap they used to, but making sure they don't eat too much of it? I feel like a big part of my problem is portion control. Logging everything on MFP has kept me on track with not snacking mindlessly. I just really enjoy some ice cream in the evening and often turn to quick and easy forms of protein (like packaged salmon or deli lunch meat).

Nothing wrong with sweets/junk food/takeaway/alcohol etc.
Some people can stay on track until they have a little of the above food/s, others need a little to be able to stay on track and not throw the whole lot in. I personally need a good mix between "healthy", filling foods and "unhealthy" but good tasting foods. I eat less takeaway now, but I still eat what I used to, just less of it.

Absolutely. I still eat pizza, ice cream, mexican food, candy bars, donuts, drink beer, etc. As I've said many times, I've given up absolutely nothing - I just eat some things less/less often and other things more/more often. As long as you can handle moderation, don't find yourself going overboard, and are able to fit indulgences in within the context of an overall balanced diet, you're on the right track.5 -
I just finished a brownie. So yep, I have all the food I can work into my goals!5

I eat the same stuff as i used to i just keep within my calorie goals (well most of the time) and have lost 34lb and 6 inches in 6 months2

I have something sweet every single day; right now different varieties of lactose free ice cream. Other times it's cookies. I'm not perfect at it, but I work very hard to make sure to stay within my calorie goals.3 -
Being being lactose intolerant, I wish there was lactose free frozen yogurt. Ben & Jerry's makes lactose free ice cream now, though, so that makes me very happy.2 -
Awesome! Thanks guys. I feel like there are a lot of health nuts out there who try to tell you you shouldn't have any processed foods and you have to cut out sugar and make sure you're eating all-natural, blah-blah-blah. I know that would be healthiest and in a perfect world, we all would eat like that but the truth is, I don't have time to homecook most meals and I can't afford all that fresh, organic stuff. So sometimes (admittedly, more often than not) the family sits down to a meal that came out of a package.
At least I strive to get in all the food groups!3 -
Life is better eating the things you enjoy we just have to eat a bit less of go to the gym work like a nutter for 2 hours then go out for a chinese2
-
Yeah OP, had luck doing that. In fact I think that is the way to go. If you are comfortably losing weight while moderating but not eliminating sweets...then why stop now? Are you bored because it isn't hard enough? Do you wish you too could feel deprived and dizzy on your 1200 calories a day of "clean" foods?5
-
I eat 'crap' foods as well as nutritious foods.. Almost 100lbs down.
It's ALL about calories. Just log them in your diary.5 -
I fit a snickers bar into the plan today.5
-
148 lbs down here and I eat crappy food all the time because I get too lazy to make stuff or in last weeks case I was down with the flu.
I just eat far less of it and make it fit my calorie goals for the day.7 -
And letting yourself eat the foods that you want and loosing weight can be done. So remember you don't have to beat your self up if you want something bad because if you tell yourself you can't have something you are more likely to eat it. So if you want pizza one day save your calories for some pizza or fit in a slice for lunch that is fine. As long as you are in a caloric deficit you will loose weight it just takes time.1

I had 6 blueberry pie Oreos yesterday. Im having Pop Tarts tonight, cherry maybe?3
-
Yep, I have chocolate every day.
I managed lose over 1/2 of my current body weight and have kept it off for almost 3 years, eating all foods in moderation. My ultimate goal is to keep the weight off and I know it would never work for me if I denied any food that I love. It has worked so far.2 -
Many of us who have been successful have done so without feeling like we have to "eat clean" or give up "processed junk" or cut out all sugar. It's not a requirement for weight loss, fitness, or health. Most try to eat a primarily nutrient dense diet with treats as we can fit them in.
My approach to this was to not cut out anything, (other than calories) but rather to add things to my lifestyle. More lean protein, more vegetables, more whole grains, more exercise, more sleep. By focusing on adding rather than restricting, I was able to lose the weight I set out to lose (30+ lbs) and am successfully maintaining a healthy weight and very active lifestyle. I eat (and did while I was losing too) pizza, ice cream, and wine on a regular basis.
The people who tell you that you have to cut all those things out to be successful are probably either broscience pushers or bloggers trying to get internet clicks...5 -
I always make room in the day for my popcorn and Twizzlers snack before bed. I wouldn't be a happy camper if I denied myself things I enjoy!4

I struggled for years with disordered eating, fueled by the diet industry and the government's (or governments'; they are all pretty similar; Brazil's is the only exception and shows us it can be done right) guidelines, in tandem. I tried desperately to stick to arbitrary rules about healthy/unhealthy foods, (or clean/unclean or processed/unprocessed, as they are called now), failed miserably, and felt miserable. I could only stand boring "healthy" food for a few weeks or months at a time. Then it was back to catching up on what I had missed - hello chips, chocolate, cookies and ice cream.
MFP was a lifesaver. I started to see my diet and life and habits and environment and attitudes as a whole. Paying attention to my needs and wants made the difference between the two disappear, and I'm eating for fuel AND fun now.
Regarding your follow-up: No, there is no "perfect diet" and you don't have to cut out sugar (it's not even possible) and eat all-natural (that's not possible either, and it doesn't even mean anything). Home cooking doesn't have to take longer than readymeals/takeaway, and fresh food isn't expensive - but organic stuff is expensive.5 -
I lost over 150 pounds eating ice cream sandwiches and snickers. I fit it into my calories. I needed it to stay sane. I probably couldn't have done it without something sweet to look forward to.3

Sounds like you have discovered balance. Way to go!1

Lost 91 lbs eating "the same crap" that got me to 250 lbs at 5'3".2

Bingo! I think many people fail at dieting because they don't believe these basic truths.

It really is all about portion control. Feeling deprived & miserable is not the way to go.
I had two "bad" snacks yesterday (high calories little to no nutritional value). Had I managed to have only one I would have been under my calories limit but because I had two, I was 91 calories over. I don't sweat the small stuff.2 -

I'm an abstainer, not a moderator. I can't have one donut.... I have to have 6. But I have found other sweet things that I can eat in moderation. I love Kashi bars. Sometimes, I will overeat them if I'm having one of those I don't care days, but usually I eat them in moderation. But I do abstain from my favorite sweets (Snackwell cookies, M&M's, and Butterfingers). Haven't had any of that in over a year. That's just what works for me. But I notice tons of people on this site that don't abstain and they can eat within their calorie goal. I'm just not one of those people.1 -

Never heard of blueberry pie Oreos. I guess they make every kind of Oreo known to man. LOL. Way to go Nabisco.1 -
I still have a weakness for sweets, however I'm trying to find better sweets to indulge myself with.
The fiber one mint brownies are great. I also have a bowl of tootsie rolls at my desk at work for when I need a nibble. (14 pieces for 130 calories? I only need a pick-me-up, maybe 3 or 4 a day, so yes please!)1
