Fruit - low carb diet silly question

I'm on a low carb diet
But I do like to have fruit now and then.
When is the best time of day to eat fruit?
Would I be best having fruit and Greek yoghurt for breakfast once or twice a week? Or just laying off it completely?

Well...if you are going to insist on a low carb diet then yes fruit is carbs and so you would have to limit how much fruit you have. Time of day is irrelevant. Which of course brings up the question...why a low carb diet?1

Thanks
Because I've tried every diet imaginable and I can't stick to it
This is working so far and im full and content3 -
Well it would probably still work if you had some fruit but kept to the same amount of calories considering its the amount of calories that matter. I mean if you are on a diet that has you avoiding fruit...gotta admit that is a bit weird.0

I am on Keto and have had strawberries and blueberries in heavy cream as a treat on occasion. I did this without going over my 28g daily carb goal.0

Tbh before I was dieting I never touched fruit
It's just to satisfy my sweet tooth lol1 -

Good for you, do what works for you so long as it isn't dangerous, everyone has to figure out what they think they can stick too. I personally find it is better for me to eat more carbs at lunch or breakfast than dinner. My trainer suggests that if I am working out to have more carbs earlier in the day to keep my energy up and then more protein after my workout to help build and maintain muscle. Hope this helps and good luck on your journey.0

I did not see low fat in the first post.
1 cup of fresh strawberries is 49 cals, 12g of carbs of which 3g are fiber so 9g net carbs
1/2 cup of fresh blueberries is 22 cals, 6g of carbs of which 4g are fiber so 2g net carbs
1/4 cup of heavy whip cream is 25 cals & 0 carbs
Total for the desert is 96 cals and 11g of net carbs
It works for me on the Keto diet which is high fat and low carb.0 -

Some, especially those with insulin resistance, find eating carbs later in the day works best for a couple of reasons.
- Their morning blood glucose is high due to the Dawn Effect (gluconeogenesis).
- Carbs stimulates their appetite so eating sugary fruit later in the day affects the appetite for a shorter time.
As a general rule, berries are lowest carb followed by fruits that can be grown in a temperate region like apples, oranges, plums, necatrines, and apricots. Tropical fruits like banana, mangos, dates and figs are highest in carbs. And of course dried fruit is very high carb.
Fruits that are considered to be veggies ( cucmbers, tomatoes and such) are also lower carb.2 -
@bexilashious why low fat in addition to low carb? Fat is no longer the enemy. Many successful low carbers here are actually high fat.0

I think you have found a very optimistic database entry for cream... 1/4 cup (60ml) of heavy whipping cream is over 200 cals. Or whipped, still over 100. So your dessert would be more like 175 or 275 cals. Which is fine as long as that fits in your day.
OP, if you like eating the way you are eating and fruit it satisfying your desire to have something sweet -that sounds like a great way to go, keep it up! Fruit is a good source of energy, fibre, and various other goodies, depending on which ones you eat, that sounds like a good habit to get into.3 -

My bad. It was a quick lookup on here and I was looking at 1 tablespoon thinking I was looking at 1 cup. I can make it fit I my daily plan when I want some.0 -

Why don't you try moderate carb? I had success keeping my carbs at 100g or slightly lower. This way you'll still get the low carb benefits and get to eat fruit too.0

Low carb is awesome! I lost 50lbs in 7 months. I got very ill (not diet related) and wasn't in control of my diet, people were bringing me meals and over 2 years I put on 25lbs. Its coming off much slower now on a mostly plant based diet. I found I love a slice of bread a day and fruit. But I just looked back in my journal and kept carbs under 30. I ate a few berries a day when my sweet tooth kicked in. But I cut off all fruit and all sugar for 30 days to detox it out of my system....and honestly the cravings for me went away. The detox was a pain in the buttocks but worth it. When I finally ate 3 bites of a wedding cake that came with strawberries 8 weeks after having no sugar....it was better than sex. I have hundreds of low car recipes if you are interested...including a low carb cheddar biscuit. I ate one every day with 1 egg and a turkey sausage. Message me for ideas if you want.

Isn't asking how to have fruit because it doesn't fit the diet mean you're not sticking to the diet?
It seems you could just knock off the arbitrary label of being on a "low carb" diet and just follow an eating plan that works for you. If fruit works in it, eat fruit. If it eventually seems it doesn't, reduce fruit.
If you're worried you'll suddenly lose satiety - well quiet a bit of the satiety of low carb diets comes from higher protein, just make sure you're not crowding out your protein with fruit and chances are you won't impact that feeling of full and content.
To be honest, I didn't realise how much carbs were in fruit when I started (I only downloaded this app 5days ago).
I was eating it with the 5 a day in mind thinking it was good for my diet.
I haven't had any in the last 5 days and it seems I've stopped plateauing as I've just weighed and lost another 3lb woop woop!
I'm just missing something sweet!
I did have Greek yoghurt and a teaspoon of honey last night as my calories were low. That satisfied my sweet tooth.
I'm looking forward to my peanut butter arriving. It's going to help a lot!1 -

This seems reasonable.
What I'd suggest, if you aren't specifically doing keto, in which case you need to focus on a carb target, is to eat the fruit and see how it affects you. It may be that it's less keeping a certain carb percentage that is satiating as just eating a more nutrient dense and filling diet overall (for you). If adding the fruit makes you struggle to stay in your calories or feel hungrier, you can decide not to keep eating them.
I know some find fruit unsatisfying, but for me it's quite filling for the calories, and also delicious.0 -

I eat low carb and enjoy berries as often as it fits into my daily allowance. Now I'm diabetic so I do avoid fruits in the early morning because it messes with my blood sugar. Otherwise I LOVE berries and cream...and even smoothies with full fat greek yogurt, some protein powder, a bit of almond milk and some strawberries and blueberries. Once in a while I treat myself and add some pineapple because if I can fit it in...why not?!?!0
-
I believe I read somewhere that it's best to eat fruits in the morning and afternoon. I personally eat mine in the morning for breakfast or for a snack. I love strawberries myself and they're lower in carbs. I put em in my shake or in some Greek yogurt. Delicious. I do eat bananas too but in smaller portions due to them being high in carbs.0

Nice....why the extreme?
I was overweight and snacked on a lot of fruit and no cake, cookies, etc. Now I eat all food, including fruit, in moderation and am a healthy weight.
My cousin is overweight and any snack she eats most of the time is fruit.
Food type is irrelevant to weight management. It's all about calories.0
