Weightloss w/o time for exercise?

So just wanted to see if anyone has any tips or success stories with this. I used to have a gym membership and tried to go a lot but life happens and it's hard. I'm a single mom who works full time monday thru friday plus my son just started kindergarten. We don't get home until 6 and its in bed by 8 for him. I'm also a full time student as well so my time and energy is spread pretty thin right now! I'm trying to do a diet of just cleaner eating- less carbs more protein and lots of fruits and veggies. Have cut out soda (except for rare treats). I started doing minor at home exercises such as squats, wall sits, lunges, small weights, etc but don't have much for cardio. As the weather cools down I'm going to try to start walking around the block with my son when we get home, but so much to do with only 2 hours until it's his bed time! With all of this said has anyone had any weightloss success from just a strict diet change? Also busy moms (or just busy people in general) what do you do for your workout?

Until you put aside any barriers to doing exercise, you're gonna be blocked by them.
I understand that you're busy and obviously have a lot to do on a daily basis with regards to your child/children but - as do a lot of people here.
It's not that you don't have time, it's just that you haven't yet worked out a routine to include the exercise that works for you personally.
This isn't knocking you, I can imagine it being hard to comprehend being able to fit more things in what probably feels like an already crammed day BUT if you start to see exercise as a release rather than a chore - you'll probably find yourself fitting small workouts in wherever you can and it won't feel so tough anymore.
Home workouts can be done anywhere and small weights, bits of equipment are fairly cheap now.
Keep the nutrition on point, work out a time in a day that you usually have to yourself and work it in.

This is also true.
Personally I encourage anybody to exercise BUT, as correctly stated above - it isn't actually necessary.
A calorie deficit will cut 'weight', whereas exercise at the same time as a calorie deficit has extended benefits both to health and tone when you've reached your target weight.1 -

How long are you planning to keep this schedule? I'd need exercise just for the stress relief!
That said, yes, I found MFP when I wasn't able to exercise much due to bad knees. However, I've been strengthening them over the last 18 months and am far less limited by them.1 -
Replacing carbs with protein won't by itself help you lose weight. They have about the same caloric value by weight.
Weighing your food and logging it will tell you if you are achieving a deficit.
I lost my first thirty pounds on calorie deficit alone.
I have been as busy and as tired as you are. I suggest you squeeze in time and redefine your idea of exercise. Walking to class counts as cardio. Climbing apartment stairs is cardio. I introduced my daughter to Endomondo and she now logs all her runs and walks.
Better cardiovascular health gives you more blood to the brain which can help you with your energy levels, stress, and study success.
Bulk cooking in a slow cooker is easy on the budget and concentrates your cooking time so you have more toddler time.
A roaring good game of tag or dance is fun and athletic for both you and your little one.6 -
It's not that I see exercise as a chore this was simply asking for ideas of home cardio I should say. Like I said I've started incorporating at home workouts and run around with my son, but it's not like I can put him to bed and go outside for a run, plus can't afford a treadmill or other kind of equipment like that right now. Though cutting calories can be very effective which by eating cleaner I am doing so, you could eat super low calories and still be eating crap food. It's very important to make sure you're getting all your nutrients. Protein is very important for increasing metabolism and for helping build muscles- which in return help you lose weight. If you are doing the diet of calorie cutting what kind of food are you eating? And my classes are all online as well so unfortunately no walking on campus for me.0

I love running and used to always go and punch the bag. It helped me relieve stress and gave me more energy so it's not that I'm trying to get out of exercise it's just more creative at home ideas for it and if not what else to do to help lose weight.0

What is your definition of clean eating? I eat the foods I like, just in smaller quantities. I do focus on hitting certain nutrients, but I still make room for treats, like the bowl of gelato I just ate. Also, yes protein is important, but for maintaining muscle as it's fairly difficult to build muscle while losing weight...even moreso for women.1 -
Clean eating to me is less pre packaged food. Instead of the lean cuisines that are lower in calories but packed with sodium and chemicals I started prepping my lunches with baked chicken, rice, and a veggie. I'm not going all crazy where I won't ever eat an oreo or some chips, but to me it's portion control and trying to eat veggies and fruits for my snacks and with every meal.3

I had a stress fracture last summer and couldn't do much cardio for 5-6 months and I did continue to drop a lot of weight by eating clean and doing upper body strength training.
I basically cut all sugar. I'd have the occasional fruit or natural sugars, but not too often when I was in lose mode. I aimed for less sodium in my nutrition. My proteins were portioned chicken, lean ground turkey, egg whites, fish. Carbs were brown rice, whole grain pastas, rolled oats, ezekiel bread, potatos, or sweet potatos. Healthy fats - olive oils, almonds, avocado. Lots of veggies. No sugar added marinaras, syrup, etc. And yes, the occasional treat without going nuts.
This is definitely not the only way to do this, but eating clean, for the most part, helped me lose. You can do bodyweight exercises for cardio and core- burpees, pop jacks, plank jacks, pushups, mountain climbers, running man, bodyweight squats, jumping jacks, planks, v-ups, palms to elbows, things like that.1 -
Losing (or gaining) weight is entirely about calorie balance.
Eat less than you need, lose weight.
You don't need to "eat clean" or do any special diet, avoid any foods, etc.
(That being said, do have a hard look at which ones have empty calories and which ones bring plenty of useful nutrition. Have less of the former & more of the latter.)
Exercise is for health & strength.
If you don't care, or don't have time to be in shape & strong, don't worry about exercise.
If you do, work it into your day, even in small ways.
Instead of just sitting down at your desk, sit down 3 times. There - you've done some squats!
Take the stairs up 1 flight or down 2; park further away from the building.
When you start looking, you'll find lots of little things like that.
BTW:less carbs more protein and lots of fruits and veggies2 -
Fitness blender on YouTube has quick workouts anywhere from 8-10 minutes and then longer ones from an 30 minutes to an hour, I would recommend the 10 minute ones, so at least you can do some cardio you can try to fit it in before bed, or can wake up 10 minutes earlier to do it or your baby might even have fun working out with you for a few minutes after school. They have playlists so you can find the videos easily and they're free.. Good luck!1

I don't know about your home arrangement, but in a super time pinch you could walk back and forth in a hallway, doing a burpee at each end for a cardio workout.0

Yup it's tough
Look you don't need to exercise to lose weight you just need to eat less than you lose
I'd get a basic pedometer like a Fitbit one or zip to monitor your general step based activity ..I bet you're more active than you think
I'd start calorie logging ..weighing all my food and logging with care ..that's where weight loss comes from
Get active with walks, park romps, games of tag, football with my child and all his friends ...that's exercise you know
Over time, I'd try to find an activity that centres me...not worrying about calorie burn just something I enjoy that brings me a moment of sanity: could be an exercise class with a crèche, something from fitnessblender at home, nerdfitness basic bodyweight training, swimming if you have childcare ..dancing...whatever you enjoy and can commit to regularly
For me it's weight lifting ...it's my time and its sacrosanct, and it does amazing things to my body pulling everything in and making it tight
Oh and sleep ....sleep matters

Try walking to the grocery store or library on the weekends. See if you can get a couple 1-2 hour walks on weekends, then just stick to your calorie target throughout the week. Can you walk to pick up your kids from school/daycare?0

I came here to recommend Fitness Blender but I see I've been beaten to it!
Sometimes I do one of there 10-15 minute HIIT workouts when I'm pushed for time, they're short but effective.0 -
Exercise will certainly help the calorie deficit - but it isn't essential.
As long as that deficit it is in place, you'll lose weight. Exercise or not.
For me, I find that exercise allows me to eat more than I can if I wasn't working out. I love food so exercise is a must for me!
I'd really recommend having a look on youtube *Search Fitness Blender* - there are so many free and short work-out's you can do when you DO have a spare moment.0 -
If you have a smart phone, could you play Pokemon Go with your son after dinner? Exercise doesn't have to take time away from your precious time with your son at the end of the day - it could be something fun you do together. And I have never met a six year old who doesn't like Pokemon Go.1

Agree I was told 85% of weight loss is about calorie intake. Working out just tones everything. But I also find I eat more when I work out, my food cravings are insane. So I always gain weight when I go to the gym or work out. So I get fat when I work out lol So I focus on being active during the day, I clean a lot, chase after the kids, walk outside a bit, work in the yard. Practical stuff that keeps me moving but not so much that I get crazy hungry and binge on food. I don't do netflix binges, or play video games, I am always on the move.0

I became a single mom when my boys were 2.5 yo and 15 months and it can be hard. I worked a very demanding job. They were first at daycare and last picked up, plus I was working on the computer after they went to bed. It can be tough. Mine are now grown.
I would echo what others have said about online workouts, they are free and available when you need them. As far as the gym membership, I paid for one for a long time without using it and just recently started going back. That being said, I should have canceled it as I hate wasted money but I knew I was going back. If I were in your position, I would cancel the membership and either find a gym with childcare or put the money into equipment for the house that I could use when I wanted.0 -

I agree. I started a high protein, low carb diet two months ago and have lost 25 lbs. I've had good success because of a reduction in my daily calories.
I can't exercise due medical problems. However, I keep active with household chores which prevents me from "sitting" all day.

I have used https://www.fitnessblender.com/ and http://darebee.com/ for at home workouts or workouts when I travel. I especially like Darabee because I have found a lot of no equipment/body weight workouts to choose from. They are HIIT style workouts that get in your cardio and your strength simultaneously. I am currently not able to run/walk for cardio due to a hamstring injury but can jump rope. That is definitely a cardio workout and is something you can do at home too.0

While you don't have to have exercise to lose weight, it definitely helps with motivation and keeping me on track. I'm more likely to make unhealthy choices on my rest days.
I am a busy working full-time mom of two. I also own my own business. I would encourage you to find a way to exercise. Make it a priority. It's all about prioritizing, and if you move exercise (and a healthier you) up the priority list, you'll see better results.
Once you figure out what works for you, and you make it happen, it will become a habit. It's just what you do.
I get home from work at 5pm. Pick up my daughter from the gym at 5:30. Pick up my son from football at 6pm. Get to the gym (somehow) at 6:30pm. Done by 7:30pm. Then I'm eating, feeding family, working frantically with them on homework. rushing them to bed, getting ready for bed myself, and preparing for the next day. It's a lot, but it has become a habit and it's just what we do. At this point I don't think about it. I just go. Somehow I don't feel right if I don't.1 -
You don't need exercise to lose weight or create a calorie deficit, but building muscle has helped ramp up my metabolism. For what it's worth, I burn more calories at rest now at a smaller size than I did a year ago when I weighed more, by increasing my muscle mass.0

If I were you I'd simply look into body weight training. If you don't have any equipment and can't afford any right now (although many chin-up bars/small weights are cheap) simply do push ups, incline push ups (you can do these on your kitchen counters), body weight squats, sit-ups, crunches, leg lifts, planks, etc. etc. You'd be surprised how high you can get your heart rate doing that stuff at home with little rest inbetween exercises. I use a machine (Bowflex M5) in the winter for 30 minutes then transition into body weight stuff. I know you said you didn't have a machine/treadmill or any money to get one right now, so maybe work through a routine of just the body weight stuff. I can easily burn 300-400 calories in 45 min to an hour with the routines I do, and I do them without weights. I do use a pull-up bar (https://www.amazon.com/Perfect-Fitness-31011-Basic-Pullup/dp/B008DNAKQK/) that was around $20 at Wal-Mart and super simple to install. It helps with pull-ups and inverted rows. I also do incline push ups, and regular push ups as well. Give it a try, even without equipment, just call it circuit training and time yourself on most apps or even MFP and log it as cardio. If you push yourself the calorie burns will be fairly accurate.0

I do workouts that 30 minutes or less. I try for a program that has a mix of strength and cardio.
I work out at home in the morning before anyone else wakes up M-F. Saturday I usually take a class at the YMCA, which includes childcare. I'm doing Beachbody On Demand workouts, but the local library has a ton of at home workout DVDs. You could borrow one and change it up every week or two. There are also lots of free workouts on YouTube.
Before I started waking up early, my workout time was right after I put my son to bed. He was in his bed, still kinda awake...but he knew that I was doing my workout.0 -
You don't have to go to the gym or even leave your house to fit in exercise. There are so many good dvd's on market you can do in the comfort of your own home, or check out YouTube for free workouts like 30 day shred. Most of the dvd's are 1/2hr Max, so there really is no excuse not being able to do them.
Also, eating less than maintenance whether you exercise or not and you will lose weight.

I have two kids, work full time and am also going back to school. It's sometimes hard to find time for it all. I drink slimfast shakes (or the generic versions) for breakfast because it's easier to grab one on my way out the door. I try to walk at least three times a week, even if I can only squeeze them in on the weekends. My doctor told me that a 30 minute walk gives you the same feeling as taking one dose of prozac. On days that I can't find time, I try to knock out 100 jumping jacks because I've read that each jumping jack burns close to 1 calorie. I usually try to do this on days I need a deficit.0
