Start yesterday. It will help with fat loss and retain lean muscles while you lose.

Start now! Check out the book Thinner Leaner Stronger by Mike Matthews - it helped me figure out what to do. Several other people will chime in, I'm sure, about other programs that work just as well.

Don't wait!!!!! It's the number one thing I wish I could convince people to do during weight loss if they have any interest in it at all. By retaining more muscle you can change the shape of your body immensely while you're still losing.
  • Agreed. You should totally start. Good luck!

Start now. Pick a program.. some are listed in the link..

If your weight loss is 2 pounds or more per week, consider changing that to min of 1.5 or lower. A good protein amount you should aim for would be around a min .8/gr per body weight.

Lifting weights while in caloric deficit is a great way to keep your lean mass (your muscle) while losing fat and also a good way to train your muscle to build strength and overall fitness. Just don't make your deficit to large or the weight training is more likely just going to tear you down.

That said don't go into it thinking you are going to build muscle while simultaneously losing fat because that is not going to happen, certainly not at any appreciable rate.

Basically lift to keep your muscle while you are at caloric deficit. Then lift to build muscle when you are at caloric surplus. Can also lift at maintenance to slowly develop your muscle while losing a bit of fat (recomp).

My biggest regret? Not starting a lifting program sooner. I definitely encourage lifting even if you are at a deficit. You won't be as strong, but you will still see "newbie gains" and it will help you to get motivated and stick with the lifestyle.

So I'd second, third and fourth the advice on here. I played around it he gym for many years and never knew dieting well. Once I really figured out 1 calorie deficit is the only way to lose and lifting is the best way to gain muscle, transform your body, etc there is not looking back. Don't wait start now, lift heavy, eat lots of protein and keep your body in a calorie deficit.
