Sunday Roast Dinner

Started my fitness pal Almost a week ago! Going really well so far!
My favourite meal of the week is a Sunday roast....Today we are having pork...yummy....then I worked out how many calories are in a roast dinner.....SHOCKING!! I'm on a 1200 calorie a day so do I have the roast or not!? Lol

This is where you decide if you want your whole days calories to be used up in this one meal..
You can eat half of your normal portion, and still leave room for something else.
Personally my weekends are like this when I am in a calorie deficit. Yesterday I ate out, and this was 1200 calories, which was 80% of my day.. same difference here. I wanted the meal I ate yesterday so I compromised.

The pork itself is probably only about 250-300 calories a serving. Gravy and side dishes can add up, depending on how they're prepared. My goal is to eat as normally as possible so I'd go ahead and have dinner with my family, but I'd have smaller portions. I love the idea of a traditional sit-down weekly meal. Food is social IMO.4

I always have a roast
But since being on a diet I don't have the potatoes
So it's meat and veg with a quarter the amount of gravy is usually have for me

Save calories for this meal.
Eat smaller portions.
Choose to eat only part of it and sub in more lower calorie vegetables. Eat the meat with a salad for example.
If you are the one cooking then try to reduce calories while cooking.

That would work. or choose a small portion of one or the other?
edit: I THINK a 3" piece of yorkshire pudding is only around 100 cals. but then again, mine always absorbs everything near it.1 -
I have a roast each Sunday but have chicken, sweet potato which I roast with some spray oil, broccoli and green beans. Not massive calories and yummy.1

This thread is making me hungry for roast. And Yorkshire pudding even though I've never had it.

Have Sunday lunch every week
Generally around 800 calories
Workout more during week to save calories
Add carrots to roast for roast carrots alongside the roast potatoes
Bulk up on veg
Weigh everything
Must listen to own advice

1200 calories seems low. I would eat the roast and the sides but that's me.3

I make Sunday roast (prime rib so not lean cut at all lol) often with roasted potatoes, carrots and beets and Yorkshire pudding. I either eat smaller portions or make sure Sunday is my "long run" day so I have lots of calorie room. You should be able to work it in! I could never give it up - too yummy4

@Chef_Barbell you are right but I'm only 5ft and that's the amount MFP worked out that I should be eating to lose 1-2 lb a week0

Then I would learn how to incorporate roasts into your lifestyle. Sounds too yummy to give up to me.3 -
My lunch is 700 to 800 calories almost every day. I just don't eat breakfast any more, out if I absolutely need something I have a Greek yogurt cup or fruit to keep the calories down.3

I have a breakfast and an evening meal but for lunch I will just have salad with a little light mayo2

How much weight are you trying to lose? 2 lbs/week is very aggressive and is usually only for people trying to lose 75 or more pounds. If you have less than 50 lbs, 1 lb/week is appropriate, and if less than 25 lbs, then you should aim to lose 0.5 lb/week.
Additionally, if you work out, you should be adding back at least some of those calories so that you are netting at least 1200 cals. Many people can lose eating more than 1200 cals.
I'm also petite, 5'2, and lost the majority of my weight eating 1600-1900 cals.5 -

I make sure I have the calories for a roast dinner... I just have less spuds or a smaller portion of Yorkshire pudding if I don't have the cals for it.
That's a lie, I always have the Yorkshire pudding, calories or not!11 -
I stick to a small serving of roast meat, one potato piece (maybe 2 if they are small) and more of other veges (carrots, parsnips, greens), and easy on the gravy. We don't often make yorkshire puds, fortunately! I would definitely have some if it's on offer.
Also, if I have a big, filling roast dinner, I often find I'm not all that hungry the following day and can shave a few calories off my intake (also on 1200).

You could also allow yourself one maintenance day per week to enjoy a fantastic meal with your family...I wouldn't be willing to skip potatoes and yorkies!5

Sunday roast yesterday for me was 665 cals and I definitely had the Yorkshire too!
I could have made smaller portions of chicken etc but it's just too nice1 -
My husband does a delicious Sunday roast dinner ... chicken, roast potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, onions, etc. ... which we have about once a month.
I forget how high it is in calories, but not a huge amount ... maybe 800-ish ... but that's OK because we precede it with a long bicycle ride which burns in the neighbourhood of 800-ish calories.
Weekends are for exercising a lot ... and then eating well.4 -

Glad to see I'm not the only one......I think we should all enjoy our Sunday roasts and not feel guilty about it lol2

Have the roast! Deprivation never, ever works and ultimately leads to binge eating.
Also - why should you miss out an a very normal and delicious meal because you are 'supposed' to eat a certain number per day? It isn't realistic. Enjoy your dinner and get back to it tomorrow. You won't be doing this every day!1 -

@DaisyChain80 - we've suggested in your other threads you set your weekly weight loss goal to no more than one pound per week.1 -
@kshama2001 are you stalking me!? Yes I do want to lose 2 stone MFP worked it out so I could lose 2 lb a week (which I did last week) I would like it if YOU would not comment on anything I put on here.
