Need Advice with Health and Excercise for my Back And Hips

Options
Hi MFP, I need some advice from anyone that suffers everyday in pain with a bad back but still exercises.
What exercises are you doing? I use to run every other day but 4 years ago my back and hips started massively giving up.
I go on long walks everyday but I,m also considering swimming, I just don't want to impact my back or make it worse.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated, Thankyou xxxx

Hi Natalie. I suffer 24/7 with chronic back pain from neck down to base of spine. I have suffered for about 20 years, have had all the tests,. Scans, bloods that showed a form of arthritis, it also effects shoulders, arms, hips knees etc etc!! I was previously very active, then forced to retire 10 years ago I became very sedentary until I did a pain management course. At Salford Royal Hospital near Manchester in the UK. I learnt strengthening exercises for the core muscles, stretching to help tone and tighten. I have built on these doing floor pilates.Pacing yourself is very important as is relaxation. My walking is very limited- less than 20 metres as pain becomes acutely excruciating, but I started swimming, building the time up slowly. It's the only time I feel "normal", with the ability to move freely in the water without doing any damage. Be cleared by your doctor first and give it a go. I always feel happy and refreshed, rather than tired and depressed as I was before. Good luck and keep well. Karen

I have a chronic bad back. I also have arthritis in my knees and shoulder and I've had a double hip replacement last year. Without knowing your stats such as weight and height it's hard to tell from your picture but one thing that will help you with the bed back and the arthritis is to lose the weight. I've noticed with my weight loss Journey that I have a lot less pain as the weight has come off.

Swimming is a great exercise and you can jog in the pool and do any kind of exercises in the pool it'll take all the stress off your joints. I know where you're coming from as far as the arthritis and pain and what I've learned to do is modify my motions as far as any type of exercise I do it's just a matter of trial and error and learning what works for you

Thankyou for your comment, I am 5ft 7 and weigh 14 Stone.
I also have arthritis, just getting a little fed up as I want to loose weight, hopefully ease my back and hips.
When I try to much it sets me back, I would like to start swimming but just wanted advice.
    Thankyou xx

Swimming may help but could also make it worse, depending on the specific back problem: Case in point - MrsStealthHealth has a back problem and her physiotherapist has said OK to to swimming freestyle and backstroke but under no circumstances breaststroke or butterfly. She is a leisure swimmer and breaststroke is her main stroke so she has decided against swimming in the short term.

I forgot to say I had the all clear for swimming but only front crawl ( freestyle) because of full spine and hips being affected, definitely get the all clear from dr or physiotherapist first.

I've been under a spine specialist for two years, been having injections in my spine for 2 years, I can't have physio too painful, I have arthritis in my lower back and hips, a degenerative broken bone, 2 buldging disks.
I try to stay mobile and as active as I can, I work full time, I am always on the go, I try to walk a lot but sometimes over do it.
But thought swimming might help, I'm seeing a senior specialist in November, I'm hoping for a miracle cure.
I've always been quite fit and this is starting to get me down, so any advice on health and fitness is fab.
