PCOS

I was just diagnosed with PCOS and just wanted to add some friends that are familiar with it :)

After freaking out a ton about my blood work...I realized from talking to some other people with PCOS, that they had the same results lol

So add me if you want ! :)

Also, any tips on diet? I have only been eating fish, chicken, veggies. I heard dairy and carbs are bad? Is all dairy bad?

I have it too. Was diagnosed in 2007. It can be so scary in the beginning, but it is something that can be "cured" by weight loss in many cases. I ma going to add you!

I was diagnosed when I was 25. It has so many symptoms and things that cause your body to fight against you.

I hope that weight loss isn't one of the things.

Im 38 now, one of my symptoms was issues getting pregnant. I have no children and mid may had to have a hysterectomy because they found cancer (I am okay with it all...had already come to terms about no kids, thankfully).

This condition is not one I would want to see anyone have. There is just so much going on and what you have to watch....and what it makes you more susceptible as you age.

There is an amazing site for people with PCOS called Soul Cysters, if you google it you will find it. Awesome information and message boards to help someone newly diagnosed.

I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS yet but I have all the symptoms from what I read & will bring it up with my doctor because I have been married for 7 yrs now & still no baby. Drs say everything is fine but I need to lose weight so we shall see before I try fertility drugs. The more a read about PCOS I just have a feeling that is what is causing my problem. Please feel free to add me...I need all the support I can get.

I am a baaaaad PCOSer. When I was diagnosed I bought the books and read on-line about insulin resistance diets, but only stuck with it for about 10 days. It was too much of a struggle for me that I knew it couldn't become a life-long change. I find by limiting my calories and making healthier food choices in general my carbs are naturally lower. I don't remember anything about diary, but like I said I am bad. My OB/GYN did put me on Spironolactone and Metformin.

A low glycemic diet (not to be confused with low carb diet although they do have some commonalites) is the generally recommended approach for weight loss with PCOS. I've never heard or read anything about dairy being bad. If anything dairy is fine b/c it is low glycemic. You just have to watch out for added sugars.
Anyway - my best advice -Talk to your doctor about it - google it - read books on it. Knowlege is power :)

I was diagnosed several years ago after trying to get pregnant (obviously without success). Trying to lose weight has been a huge challenge, but this site has been so great for me.

I just have to post on this one, PCOS has no cure, and though things you do like weight loss can make symptoms less or easier to handle, you will always have it. So, you have to always be diligent with your health.

I wish they would hurry up and find something to cure it.

Another Soul Cyster here.... had it for over 20 years but of course they had no idea what it was that long ago....
Just hope you don't have to become best friends with your laser hair removal artist! Personally I think that is the worst symptom you get -- well that and high infertility. I was never able to have kids..which used to feel like a bad thing, but not anymore :)

It's not nearly as scary as you think... I eat plenty of dairy, but carbs are tricky. Ditch the bad carbs, eat the good ones -- whole grain, quinoa etc. Have to really watch those because this makes you very insulin resistant -- and if you get unlucky enough to also develop type 2 diabetes -- then you have a double whammy and its nearly impossible to lose weight to fix either one.

I modified my goals here so when I track my food, my carbs are lower than what they calculate and my protein is much much higher. Protein shakes and lots of lean meat, seafood etc. Seems to work :) Lots of good reading out there...dont be freaked out. It's really something you can live with pretty easily.

I totally agree, both with your last sentence and the one about kids...LOL

I also have PCOS. It's amazing how many women I've found that suffer from it as well. 10 years ago, I'd never heard of it, even though I've been suffering from the PCOS symptoms since my teens, I just thought that was something everyone went through. It wasn't until I started doing some research on my period irregularity, abnormal hair growth, weight gain and it being nearly impossible to lose and other pesky problems that I learned of PCOS. I brought it up with doctors and finally saw an endocrinologist a few years ago, who officially diagnosed me with it. I've found that eating low-carb (on top of medications) helps me the most with losing weight and keeping my PCOS at bay. I'll gladly be your friend (and any others that'd like to be friends).

I'd be happy to be a support as well. I was diagnosed when I was 11... I'll be 24 in 2 weeks.

What is PCOS? It doesn't sound like a very good thing. I feel for all of you who suffer from it--by the things I'm reading here.

It's an endocrine disorder. Makes it hard to lose weight, get pregnant, get rid of acne...among other symptoms. It pretty much sucks.

I have had PCOS for more years than I care to remember. It is a very frustrating disease that few understand or able to relate to unless they have it. For those of you who hope to have children let me offer words of encouragement. I have two beautiful girls, a sixteen and twelve year old. Both daughters were conceived without any fertility treatment. At that time we did not know of my issues. However, we went back and forth on having a child so I was on and off birth control, a method that is sometimes used in the early stages of PCOS to conceive. We knew nothing about my condition and remained in ignorant bliss. God had a plan and we were blessed with our first child. It was not until we decide to have another child that we became aware of my condition. In July of 1997 I stopped having periods after seeking and trying many things my gyn/ob sent me to a fertility specialist. After many tests she informed me of my options. The expense was overwhelming and the chances slim to none. I told her that I was not willing to risk or entire future on a maybe. During this whole time my family and I prayed for a child. I felt like Hannah in the Bible. In the Fall of 1998 I found out I was expecting our second child. The pregnancy was difficult and I knew I could miscarry at anytime. God continued to be good to us and blessed us with a second beautiful baby girl in March of 1999. I thank God everyday for the two beautiful gifts he has given us. My advice to those who have PCOS is to eat right with low carbs and sugars. When you eat carbs pair them with protein. As hard as it is keep your weight under control. Five pounds will throw me in a downward spiral where I look at food and it causes me to gain, but most of all trust in God to meet your every need.

I was also just diagnosed with PCOS. It is frustrating because I have been at this weight loss thing since October and haven't been able to lose more than 5-7 lbs. It is good to finally have some answers. I'm new to this site and would love to be able to get support from all of you who also have PCOS.
