It seems that most of this board is taken up with people just going to the gym and trying to lose weight anyone else here practice Brazilian jujitsu and do sport specific conditioning? I'd like to chat about that :)

    no - but I do capoeira :)

In the past all I did was capoeira (before I got fat and all that post baby stuff).

NOw I concentrate more on weight training but still go to capoeira once a week. HArder to juggle with a child. Gym I can do at lunchtime during my work hours.

I know though that it is possible, good and FUN to get fit healthy and muscular doing martial arts only without having to lift weights.

    Capoeira . Isn't that a dance?

not really. it looks like it is because that's the only thing they show - "dancing" and jumping around doing acrobatics and stuff.

That's not the reality that's unfortunately the "show" capoeira.

In reality it's a proper martial art (I have done Hap Ki Do, Karate and Muay Thai in the past) - we train hard in terms of the warm ups with bodyweight exercises - sit ups push ups lunges and all sorts of other stuff, we do kicking drills of various types of kicks, etc

the difference is that we "dance" when we "fight" - you have to keep moving by doing the basic step which called a ginga (that side to side lungey thing) and we need to listen to the music in order to adjust the game accordingly - fast music fast game, slow music slow game. We touch contact but not full force in class.

I've just recently just started training in BJJ and I'm really loving it. At this point, I'm so new that I'm focusing on a lot of the basics and getting as much experience rolling as possible.

I'd love to hear what others are doing though and has been helpful for them! I'm doing BJJ 4x a week right now, and I'm also doing SL 5x5 (so lifting 3x a week) and recently started doing a bit of HIIT.

I want to learn all the things :)

I just started BJJ, really good fun! I mainly train kickboxing so it's nice to have a bit of variety. Goes really well with yoga as well

I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a few months ago and love it. Is there an active BJJ group on here?

@computerfox82 - I haven't found an active one yet. Folks just seem to pop in here every now & then.

Judo here. I have been to a few BJJ classes but found the judo is more exhausting on the muscles and lungs.

Muay Thai looks so intense. I would love to take classes but don't have the time.

Maybe the group link mentioned above will be active again.

Do you think MFP is accurate with the amount of calories burned during Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? I usually adjust my time to how many minutes I spent with my heart rate up.

@computerfox82 I think the MFP estimate is too high, but it can vary so much from class to class, depending on your training partner, how much time is spent rolling, what you're drilling, etc.

@Matt200goal sent me this great link that you may find useful: http://timbrucejiujitsu.blogspot.com/2012/07/how-many-calories-do-we-burn-in-bjj.html

Today is the third day in a row I get to go to morning open mat! It's mostly just the guys there, but many of them are really good at rolling with girls so it is fun! This year I will work through my issues with take downs thanks to the concussions and compete again.

BJJ 3-4x a week. (3x GI & 1x No-GI) I'm about to embark on some kettlebell and bodyweight exercises to enhance it on the off days. It's addicting. And it's hard trying not to want to buy the cool looking GI's as well. lol

Totally! I NEED the Venum Snaker gi, because I work with snakes and my favourite colour is yellow, but I love in South Africa so the exchange rate is not so friendly!
